Pit, a newcomer in the sequel Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008) for the Nintendo Wii, was originally supposed to be an unlockable character in "Super Smash Bros.", but due to the sudden yet enormous popularity of Pokemon, he was replaced by Jigglypuff.

The idea of characters entering on the floating platforms came from the classic Mario Bros. (1983) on arcade cabinets, home consoles, and handheld games. In the game, Mario and Luigi descend from above the camera on floating platforms after losing a life.
