Wicked may not have swept the major award categories at the 2025 Golden Globes but it still was at the center of jokes and moments during Sunday’s show.

The Jon M. Chu-directed box office hit went into the night with four nominations including best picture, musical or comedy. The film’s stars Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, and Ariana Grande, who plays Galinda/Glinda, were nominated for best actress and best supporting actress, respectively.

Wicked, based on the 2003 stage musical of the same name, tells the untold story of the witches of Oz. Winnie Holzman, the stage production’s book writer, wrote the screenplay for Chu’s movie with Dana Fox. Academy Award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz adapted the musical for the screen.

Diane Delano, the busy character actor who portrayed Officer Barbara Semanski on CBS’ Northern Exposure and the mean science teacher Bobbi Glass on The WB’s Popular, has died. She was 67.

Delano died Friday of cancer in her home in Sherman Oaks, her friend Stepfanie Kramer announced.

“She was big and bold and brought her sharp wit and perfect comic timing to every role,” Kramer said. “Her earthy and raucous presence enabled her to always own the room. She was one of a kind.”

As Rhonda Vasek, Delano had a romantic liaison with Douglas Brackman Jr. (Alan Rachins) in 1987 on the second season of NBC’s L.A. The news was confirmed Monday by her friend Stepfanie Kramer.

Delano is best known for playing Barbara Semanski, the tough Alaska state trooper and sometimes love interest of Barry Corbin’s astronaut-turned-entrepreneur Maurice Minnefield on CBS’ Emmy-winning comedy Northern Exposure. She also played Roberta “Bobbi” Glass on Ryan Murphy’s WB Network series Popular, which aired from 1999-2001.

While no new songs have been added to 2024's Wicked, changes have been made to some of the musical's most iconic songs. While this can be jarring for longtime fans, the changes make sense for this cinematic adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical.

"Dancing Through Life," "Popular," and "A Sentimental Man" are expanded to varying degrees in the movie, highlighting certain stars and set pieces within the performances. "One Short Day" has the most drastic addition, which adds to the lore of the Land of Oz while spotlighting Wicked royalty. And finally, "Defying Gravity" is spaced out differently to accommodate the on-screen action and circle back to Elphaba's first song.

Cynthia Erivo has no problem with moviegoers singing along during screenings of Wicked.

In fact, she fully supports it.

On Thursday, the film’s star was at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, where she gave an interview to Hoda Kotb, Al Roker and Savannah Guthrie, who hosted NBC’s broadcast of the annual spectacle. Kotb asked Erivo, who plays Elphaba in Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of the musical, how she feels about the issue that’s been dividing fans online and noted that many folks have been singing along in theaters.

“Good! I’m Ok with it,” Erivo replied. “We spent this long singing it ourselves, it’s time for everyone else to join in. It’s wonderful.”

It’s set to include renditions of the musical’s notable songs, including “Popular” and “Defying Gravity,” as performed by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande who star as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, in a tale that follows their unlikely friendship.

The film is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel that inspired the musical, which featured an original score from Stephen Schwartz. The cast also includes Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University headmaster Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq and Bowen Yang as Pfannee.

The soundtrack will be available in various formats including CD, double vinyl, double picture disc, and digital.

“Wicked,” Universal’s film adaptation of the hit Broadway show, is landing in theaters on Nov. 22 — five days ahead of schedule.

It was originally supposed to open on Nov. 27, the same day as Disney’s “Moana 2.” On its new release date, “Wicked” is smartly avoiding a box office battle royale against another movie musical that appeals to a similarly female demographic. Now, “Wicked” will get a jump on the Thanksgiving holiday, but it won’t be completely devoid of competition. The film is set to debut on the same day as Paramount and Ridley Scott’s historical epic “Gladiator II,” though there’s presumably much less overlap in the audience and thus, a threat of cannibalization.

The North American leg was scheduled to kick off Sept. 6 at the Ball Arena in Denver and wrap Oct. 20 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta before heading overseas for concerts in the U.K., Ireland, and Europe. Almost a month before she sets off on her North American Celebration tour, Madonna hit #1 on five Billboard charts with her new collaboration featuring the Weeknd and Playboi Carti, “Popular.”

Although the 64-year-old singer’s music career has been wildly successful for over 40 years, this is the first time the Queen of Pop has been on the Billboard pop charts in each decade.

Madonna has now had songs debut in the Billboard Top 100 in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and the 2020s.

Cher is the only other artist to achieve this feat. Her songs debuted from the 1960s to the 2000s.

“Popular,” written by the Weeknd, was released on June 2 and is the second single released to accompany the singer’s new HBO drama, The Idol.

Madonna and Smith, using the hashtag #samandmadonna, took to social media to share their own teasers of their collaboration.

Smith, who goes by the pronouns they/them, posted a TikTok video first, where they duet their dancers while they move to the beat of the new song.
