No one lauds the “Wicked” quite like Billie Eilish — at least when she is in full Ariana Grande-fangirl mode, as she was in interviewing her longtime singing heroine after a screening of the movie musical in Hollywood on Tuesday night. The Q&a, held for SAG members at the Directors Guild of America’s theater, had Eilish doing the moderating at the personal behest of the film’s Oscar-nominated Glinda.
“My team was like, ‘Who would be a cool person to do this? Who’s your dream person?'” Grande said at the outset. “I was like, ‘Billie, [but] she’s not gonna say yes.’ She’s too busy. She’s too fabulous. It’s too much. But she said ‘Yes,’ and I was like, ‘Oh, shit. Now I’m so nervous.'”

Can I let you all in on a little secret?
I watched the entirety of Xo, Kitty Season 2, and by the time the credits rolled, I had forgotten everything important that had happened.
It genuinely sucks when that happens, but it’s worse when it’s something that happens with a show that genuinely has great potential.

One of the biggest takeaways from Xo, Kitty is that the season came to a quick end by the time it started to find its rhythm, which sums up the series itself.

Wicked may not have swept the major award categories at the 2025 Golden Globes but it still was at the center of jokes and moments during Sunday’s show.
The Jon M. Chu-directed box office hit went into the night with four nominations including best picture, musical or comedy. The film’s stars Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, and Ariana Grande, who plays Galinda/Glinda, were nominated for best actress and best supporting actress, respectively.
Wicked, based on the 2003 stage musical of the same name, tells the untold story of the witches of Oz. Winnie Holzman, the stage production’s book writer, wrote the screenplay for Chu’s movie with Dana Fox. Academy Award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz adapted the musical for the screen.

In the movie musical, Wicked, Ariana Grande's Glinda sings often, yet the song that truly defines her, and gives audiences insight into her character, is "Popular." First introduced in The Wizard of Oz as Glinda the Good, the Glinda in Wicked is self-obsessed, driven, and uniquely intelligent. Although she initially bullies her new roommate, Elphaba, the two women learn to love each other, despite their differences. More than that, Glinda tries to teach Elphaba how to be well-liked at a school (and in a world) where everyone seems to be against Elphaba at all times.
Despite the fact that Wicked seems to focus more heavily on Elphaba's story of magic and power, Glinda plays an extremely important role. She not only represents The Wizard of Oz characters that audiences know and love, but she subverts expectations just as much as Elphaba does. Unlike her nickname, Glinda is not always good,...

Seyfried went on to question whether or not she should have posted the video at all, saying it was just “fun” and was done purely “in jest.

Wicked, the new movie based on the hit Broadway show, is officially a success. Actually, it's a historic success: it's the highest-grossing movie ever to be based on a Broadway musical, at least at the domestic box office; and the soundtrack is topping multiple Billboard charts. Audiences are primed for Wicked: Part 2, which will close out this prequel to The Wizard of Oz when it comes out next November.
Wicked: Part 1 adapts the first act of the Broadway musical, and it pretty much includes everything fans are expecting. There are a couple of new bits — a chase sequence with flying moneys here, a couple of crowd-pleasing cameos there — but generally it sticks very close to the original show by composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz.
And that's despite Schwartz himself trying to change up some aspects. For instance, he told The Times that he'd considered putting a new spin on the song "Popular,...

Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Wicked. It's standard for a film adaptation of a Broadway musical to either add new songs to the script or alter songs from the stage production in some way, and Wicked is no exception. While no new songs have been added to 2024's Wicked, changes have been made to some of the musical's most iconic songs. While this can be jarring for longtime fans, the changes make sense for this cinematic adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical.
"Dancing Through Life," "Popular," and "A Sentimental Man" are expanded to varying degrees in the movie, highlighting certain stars and set pieces within the performances. "One Short Day" has the most drastic addition, which adds to the lore of the Land of Oz while spotlighting Wicked royalty. And finally, "Defying Gravity" is spaced out differently to accommodate the on-screen action and circle back to Elphaba's first song.

Cynthia Erivo has no problem with moviegoers singing along during screenings of Wicked.
In fact, she fully supports it.

“Wicked” composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz revealed in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that he pitched Ariana Grande on a different version of “Popular” for the film adaptation that she instantly turned down. The Grammy winner was adamant that her Glinda could not have any traces of her own music career, so she was not interested in making any of the “Wicked” songs feel like pop songs.
“In the spirit of being open to new things for the movie, my music team and I thought, let’s refresh the rhythm. Ariana Grande was not going to let the original Wicked song “Popular” turn into a hip-hop version.
Stephen Schwartz, the composer and lyricist of the original Broadway show — which debuted in 2003 and is now a hit feature film from Universal — wanted to change Glinda’s big song for the movie version. Onstage, “Popular” has been performed with two beds and features Glinda’s high-pitched voice and bubbly personality as she fixes Elphaba’s hair and shows her how to flirt. “In the spirit of being open to new things for the movie, my music team and I thought, let’s refresh the rhythm. Let’s, maybe, I don’t know, hip-hop it up a little bit,” Schwartz told the Los Angeles Times. However, he recalled Grande rejected the idea saying,...

As of recent years, there has been a correlation with musical performances being recognized in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Oscars, with eight nominated since 2002, and half emerging victorious. This year, we have potentially three actresses from two movie musicals competing for the five slots: Ariana Grande for Universal Pictures’ “Wicked,” and Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez for Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez.” Let’s take a look back at the many scenarios where song-and-dance performers were cited for Best Supporting Actress and what that could mean for this year’s contenders.
There have been a myriad of supporting actresses recognized for film musicals at the Oscars predominantly during the inception of the genre, which include Jean Hagen for “Singin’ In The Rain” (1952), Peggy Wood for “The Sound of Music” (1965), and Kay Medford for “Funny Girl” (1968). But the first victory came for Rita Moreno for “West Side Story” (1961), who...

The upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked” is taking a unique approach by having the lead actors perform their songs live on camera rather than lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks. Director Jon M. Chu revealed this creative decision in a recent behind-the-scenes video promoting the film. Having the performers sing live makes for a more connected experience both technically and artistically.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who play Elphaba and Glinda respectively, will sing their vocals in real-time as the scenes are filmed. This presents a significant challenge but sets the production apart from most other movie musicals that typically rely on studio recordings. Chu explained that both stars are talented singers, so the team decided live performances were the best option for every scene. The video showed glimpses of Grande warming up her voice and Erivo singing while suspended from wires, demonstrating the technical aspects of the live capture.

Universal Pictures has revealed a new featurette for the highly anticipated Wicked film, which shows how the singing was recorded live on the set. For movies, the singing is usually recorded away from the set in a more controlled environment.
In the video, director Jon M. Chu says, “They are the best singers in the world, and so in every scene, they have been singing live.” Cynthia Erivo added: “We chose to sing live because it meant that we would be further connected to the words we were saying and to each other.” Ariana Grande said: “It was an immediate no-brainer for Cynthia and I. We both were like, well, of course, we’re singing live.”

We just got confirmation of what we long suspected: the upcoming movie version of “Wicked” will close with “Defying Gravity,” which ended the first act on Broadway. We learned this from the listing of tracks on the soundtrack, which is available for pre-order. It is due to drop on the day that the movie is released: Nov. 22.
Expect Cynthia Erivo to leave audiences wanting more when she sings this show-stopper as her character, Elphaba, transforms into the Wicked Witch. But they’ll have to wait a full year to see the second half of the story with “Wicked Part Two,” set for release on Nov. 26, 2025. Jon M. Chu (“Crazy Rich Asians”) directed both movies while Winnie Holzman, who reaped a Tony bid for the Broadway book, wrote the screenplay with Dana Fox (“Cruella”).

Disney’s long-expected move to fold ABC Signature into 20th Television brings to an end the media conglom’s in-house TV studio, which started off as Touchstone Television a decade before Disney bought ABC, subsequently being renamed ABC Studios and more recently ABC Signature.
Launched in 1985, Touchstone TV’s first major hit was Golden Girls, which ran on NBC for seven seasons. Other successful series from that era include Blossom, also for NBC, and Home Improvement, Ellen and Boy Meets World for ABC.
In the first years after ABC became part of Disney, Touchstone Television continued to sell to all networks — which is how 20th Television operated for its entire run at Fox — with shows such as Felicity and Popular for the WB and The PJs for Fox/WB.

“Wicked,” Universal’s film adaptation of the hit Broadway show, is landing in theaters on Nov. 22 — five days ahead of schedule.
It was originally supposed to open on Nov. 27, the same day as Disney’s “Moana 2.” On its new release date, “Wicked” is smartly avoiding a box office battle royale against another movie musical that appeals to a similarly female demographic. Now, “Wicked” will get a jump on the Thanksgiving holiday, but it won’t be completely devoid of competition. The film is set to debut on the same day as Paramount and Ridley Scott’s historical epic “Gladiator II,” though there’s presumably much less overlap in the audience and thus, a threat of cannibalization.
This is the second major date shift for “Wicked: Part One,” which was initially on the calendar for Dec. 25. But Universal moved the film to Thanksgiving to dodge Christmas releases like Disney’s...
