Originally set to end at the end of the year 2000, but Benedito Ruy Barbosa worked on the storyline to end at World War II after the positive reception of his characters.
Maiara, the young actress that played the daughter of Ana Paula Arósio's character Guiliana, grew so close to the actress she started calling her "mom" off screen. The cast would help Maiara to learn how to walk.
Benedito Ruy Barbosa himself met children of Italian immigrants in his childhood and was inspired by his own past in the creation of the series. Director Jayme Monjardim's great grandfather was Italian immigrant Francisco Matarazzo, who left Napoles to become a famous and wealthy man in Brazil.
