The California wildfires have disrupted the lives of thousands, and unfortunately, Cowboy Bebop star Melissa Fahn is now counted among those who've lost everything. Fans are banding together, however, to help Fahn get back on her feet with a GoFundMe campaign.
Melissa Fahn is a long-time voice actor, most famously known for voicing the young hacker Edward on Cowboy Bebop. Fahn has contributed her voice to countless other characters as well, including anime characters like Naruto's daughter Himawari in Boruto or Rika Nonaka in Digimon Tamers, and Western animation characters like Gaz Membrane of Invader Zim. Her career is nothing short of amazing, having earned her fans all over. Now, those fans have a chance to repay her by assisting Fahn as she struggles to come back after her home was destroyed in the fires outside Los Angeles.

Cartoon teachers often don't take center stage and are usually the obstacle that gets in the way of their students having fun or causing trouble. However, they are essential in many programs and movies because they ground the stories in reality. Animated shows are often geared toward kids, who have to deal with teachers on a daily basis. It makes sense for a number of these series to feature the student-teacher relationship.
While some teachers try their hardest to teach, others are more concerned about making an impact in their student's lives. The best TV teachers, animated or not, do both. They not only teach their lessons successfully but leave their students hungry to learn more. Even though some animated teachers aren't the best at their job, they are certainly memorable. The role of the teacher isn't usually an exciting one in animation, but these educators have left their mark on television history.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
For December 2024, we’re celebrating the end of the year with a stocking full of Strange Holiday TV Specials and Seasonal Midnight Movies.
First, read the Bait: a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film. Then, try the Bite: a breakdown of the movie’s ending, impact, and any other spoilers you’d want.
The Bait: “Blade Runner” Meets “Die Hard” Meets Ancestry.com
Let’s stop asking if “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie — and start asking how many other holiday cult classics we’re missing out on with such narrow-minded nonsense. In “Trancers,” a hyper-stylish pursuit through a spunky sci-fi world sees Trooper Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson) travel from the 23rd century to 1984 while hunting down his arch-nemesis, Martin Whistler (Michael Stefani).

Welcome to IndieWire After Dark, where we pick a new theme for our midnight movie programming every month!
Join us on Friday nights (and special occasions!) to explore some of the strangest fringe films available at any hour in the Streaming Age.
The lights are twinkling and the temperature is dropping. But in December 2024, the merry-making vibes are distinctly and resolutely… off. Lean into that discomfort with some Holiday Midnight Movie (and TV!) Madness as we celebrate a weird year.
After several particularly stressful months in current events, the pre-Christmas season feels oddly foreboding. That might be a welcome reprieve for those of us who are usually glum during the holidays (just me?), but the blues can sneak up on anyone. Whether you’re battling a bickering family or dealing with loneliness, weirdo cinema has the power to fight your funk with more funk.
When in doubt, clown it out!

The first season of A24 and Prime Video's smash-hit animated series "Hazbin Hotel" ended on February 2, 2024, and while the creative team is hard at work on season 2, the show's popularity hasn't decreased. "Hazbin Hotel" earned the largest global debut viewership for a new animated title on Prime Video, surpassing other hot commodities like "Invincible" and "The Boys Presents: Diabolical." The series doesn't boast the same recognizable IP as its contemporaries, but that hasn't stopped it from becoming a phenomenon. In the months since the season's end, convention circuits have shown that "Hazbin Hotel" has become one of the most popular shows for cosplayers to emulate, fanart floods social media feeds on the daily, but thanks to the death of the monoculture, the popularity often feels like it exists in a vacuum.
I've previously described "Hazbin Hotel" as adult animation, but too edgy for the constraints of something like "The Simpsons.

This post contains spoilers for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice."
Those who revisited Tim Burton's original 1988 "Beetlejuice" before seeing the long-gestating sequel (or who have that first movie ingrained in their movie-watching DNA) may have noticed that, amid the return of familiar faces like Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, a few main actors are largely absent from the follow-up.
As the trailer for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" reveals, the film sees the Deetz family reunited for the funeral of patriarch Charles Deetz, played by "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" actor Jeffrey Jones in the original movie. As we learn in a flashback that features exaggerated stop-motion puppetry, Charles died on a bird-watching vacation overseas when his plane went down in the ocean and he was eaten by a shark. Throughout the movie, we see glimpses of Charles wandering around the afterlife, his entire upper body missing after being chewed off by the shark. In keeping...

Wolverine and the X-Men deserves a revival for its captivating narrative and loyal fan base, building on the success of its predecessor. The Spectacular Spider-Man's mature themes and unique take on the iconic hero make it a valuable addition to the superhero landscape. Invader Zim's dark comedy and critical acclaim set the stage for a revival that could bring new storylines and humor to modern audiences.
Although cancellations of animated TV shows are common in the television industry, there are numerous series that could significantly benefit from being revived. From cult classics like Invader Zim and Freakazoid! to critically acclaimed classic ‘90s Saturday morning cartoons such as Hey Arnold, many animated shows have been cut short due to various reasons, including financial constraints, business decisions, or shifts in network priorities. These premature endings often leave storylines unresolved and characters' arcs incomplete, leaving viewers yearning for more.

At the end of 2022, I was given the Goliath task of explaining to our readers (and much of our staff) why the internet had gone completely feral over the animated design of the Devil Daddy himself, Lucifer Morningstar, on "Hazbin Hotel." Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano debuted the animated musical pilot for "Hazbin Hotel" on YouTube in 2019, funded entirely by Medrano's Patreon followers and brought to life completely by freelance animators. It quickly went viral and generated a diehard fanbase, one that exists on the fringes of fandom circles and well outside of four-quadrant entertainment.
It's adult animation, but too edgy for the constraints of something like "The Simpsons." It's as raunchy as "South Park," but caters to a queerer audience base. It boasts a Broadway cast as impressive as "Central Park," but without the "Hamilton" name recognition to excite your mom. "Hazbin Hotel" is what happens when you grow up watching...

Cartoon scientists bring a unique blend of science and sportsmanship to animated shows, like Professor Pat Pending in Wacky Races. The longevity and comedic mishaps of characters like Gyro Gearloose in DuckTales and Brainy Smurf in The Smurfs contribute to their iconic status. Invader Zim was reportedly canceled after two seasons due to poor ratings from its target audience of kids aged 2 to 11. Despite its cancelation, Invader Zim has become a cult classic, receiving critical acclaim and ranking on various "best animation" lists. Fans of Invader Zim continue to show their support through conventions, reboots, and the purchase of official merchandise, solidifying the show's legacy.
Invader Zim may have forged an enduring legacy, but the series still ended after just two seasons. Created by cartoonist Jhonen Vasquez for Nickelodeon, the animated dark comedy unapologetically pushed the boundaries of children's television with morbid, counterculture humor and the grisly nature of its overarching storyline. Invader Zim followed the titular alien as he attempted to conquer Earth and enslave the human race under the order of the Irken Empire — a mission he repeatedly failed at to hilarious effect.

Nickelodeon reportedly canceled Invader Zim due to low ratings, but the exact reason for its premature conclusion has been debated. The creator of Invader Zim, Jhonen Vasquez, wanted the show to move to MTV, but Nickelodeon did not support the idea. Invader Zim could have found success on a different network with an older demographic, such as MTV or Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.
Had Nickelodeon made one rectifying decision rather than wasting the opportunity, the cult classic Invader Zim show may have had a much longer run on television. Instead, the two season-long animation staple was canceled by the children's network on the grounds that Jhonen Vasquez's Invader Zim simply fostered very low ratings. According to The Northerner in 2002, Nickelodeon went on record to confirm that the fate of the TV show was due to poor ratings from the channel's core demographic, kids ages 2 to 11, but rumors through the...

Given the success of Max's Fionna and Cake, which is an offshoot of Adventure Time, the door is now open for more animated series spinoffs. Considering the extensive lineup of classic cartoons that have emerged in recent decades, the possibilities for spinoffs are endless. When executed properly, a spinoff series has the potential to revive longtime supporters, bridging the gaps between generations old and new, and that's good for creators and viewers alike.
Shows like The Legend of Korra, which followed as one of the spinoffs of Avatar: The Last Airbender, can be an easy success due to the existing fanbase and IP brand recognition while simultaneously adding fresh angles and new perspectives that attract additional audiences. The exploration of secondary characters and the expansion of abandoned plots is a formula that few can resist. With this considered, there are several other popular cartoons that could benefit from having a spinoff.

The character of Roberto, the homicidal robot, first appeared on the "Futurama" episode "Mother's Day", although he would become more of a star in the following season's "Insane in the Mainframe". Roberto, played by the amazing Dave Herman, was a vicious criminal often frustrated that he was programmed to be as violent as he was. He had a penchant for stabbing, and rarely spent much time outside of robot prisons and/or mental asylums. Roberto once forced Bender (John Dimaggio) and Fry (Billy West) to help him with a bank robbery, broke into Planet Express to take the main characters hostage, and escaped from an asylum by wearing the robotic skin of his doctor. "Don't call me crazy!" he would yell, "I'm just not user-friendly!" His parole officer once ordered Roberto to get an upgrade, otherwise, he wouldn't get back his stabbin' knife.
Roberto eventually even had a catchphrase of sorts.

A new hashtag, #comicsbrokeme, has gone viral on social media, and has exposed some of the nightmares of working in the comics industry. The hashtag was inspired by the recent passing of artist Ian McGinty. McGinty, who was 38 at the time of his death, had worked extensively in comics, having illustrated the Invader Zim comic book; McGinty also had a number of creator-owned works, such as Welcome to Showside. While no cause of death was released, those close to McGinty said he had health issues stemming from being overworked–which prompted the hashtag.

Although kids and family shows are known for being pretty tame, eight kids' TV shows were terrifying horrors when they were first released. Whether the horrific imagery is intentional or not, these shows have traumatized generations of kids, being the first exposure that many children have to true terror. While these eight shows span a variety of years, genres, and mediums, they all have some pretty frightening scares in common.
While many kids are too young to watch the most popular slasher films, certain TV shows can be just as scary as their horror movie counterparts. Shows like Invader Zim and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy have played on popular scary tropes, while other shows have only featured unintentionally frightening episodes. However, these eight kids shows are the scariest overall, with them being ranked from least scary to most scary.

Today we are going to find out where to watch Invader Zim and what streaming platform to catch it on.
Invader Zim is an animated science fiction cartoon originally aired on the kids channel Nickelodeon at the turn of the century. First appearing on the channel in 2001, the series was prematurely canceled after only airing 27 of the intended 40 episodes that it was scheduled for. The brain child of American cartoonist, Jhonen Vasquez, Invader Zim gained somewhat of a cult following and the adventures of the extraterrestrial Irken, Zim, surprisingly appealed to an older audience rather than the usual younger clientele that Nickelodeon appeals too. Invader Zim is now considered as one of the best original cartoons to have ever featured on Nickelodeon, which is quite a feat considering the channel is home to internationally successful shows like SpongeBob SquarePants and Rugrats. So how did the channel come to prematurely axe the series?...

As the calendar flips over to 2023, Prime Video is attempting to start a new year on the right track with fresh seasons of some major originals.
Prime Videos’ list of new releases for January 2023 is highlighted by Hunters season 2 on Jan. 13. The first season of Hunters was set in 1977 and followed young Jonah Heidelbaum’s (Logan Lerman) introduction to a world of Nazi-hunting. After a lengthy wait for season 2, the fresh (and final) batch of episodes will find Jonah and friends venturing to South American to take out none other than Adolf Hitler, himself.
While Nazi-hunting undoubtedly takes up a lot of streaming space, two other Amazon original series of note arrive in January. The Rig, a supernatural thriller set on a Scottish oil rig, premieres Jan. 6. That will be followed by season 2 of fantasy role-playing animated series The Legend of Vox Machina on Jan. 20.

The new year is upon us and Amazon Prime Video is kicking things off in grand fashion. Not only are they debuting the third season of their Tom Clancy adaptation “Jack Ryan,” they’re also debuting the final season of the ambitious, Al Pacino-starring actioner “Hunters.”
Initially debuting to the service in February of 2020, right as the pandemic started, the series’ first season follows a ragtag group of Nazi hunters in 1977 New York City. The so-called Hunters discover that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials are living in the United States and are conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in America. The Nazi hunters, led by Pacino, will embark on a bloody quest to bring the Nazis to justice and thwart their genocidal plans. The series concluded in 2020 and has taken some time to get back to screens. Unfortunately, this second season will be a finale as well so fans...

Rico Nasty has teamed up with buzzworthy Atlanta rapper Bktherula for “Vaderz,” the first single from the Maryland native’s upcoming mixtape, scheduled for release later this summer. (Rico previously teased a mixtape titled Rx on social media last year that has yet to surface.)
Unabashedly aggressive and threatening, the Ben10k, Danes Blood and Dirty Dave-produced track culls influence from a varied swath of genres including Edm, trap and nu metal — and the found footage aesthetics of the song’s accompanying anxiety-inducing video further compliments “Vaderz” no-holds-barred attitude. “This ain’t no double life,...

Exclusive: WarnerMedia has revamped its content innovation hub WarnerMedia OneFifty, relaunching a redesigned platform focused on highlighting new content and projects from underrepresented creators. The new site features a bulked up content acquisitions and projects slate, including its recent acquisition of Tomer Shushan’s White Eye, which is nominated this year for the Live-Action Short Oscar.
The platform aims to highlight and invest in out-of-the-box ideas from creators with unique voices who will develop content across the spectrum spanning features, series, digital, animation, documentary, interactive, VR/Ar, music, transmedia, experimental, immersive and more.

When ViacomCBS recently announced the slate of programming that would be coming to Paramount+, the rebranded streaming service formerly known as CBS All Access, the media conglomerate touted a rebooted version of the beloved Nickelodeon classic Rugrats. Described as a “reimagining of the classic ‘90s hit,” the new Rugrats will feature the voice cast from the original 1991 animated series, but present the babies in a brand-new, three-dimensional CG style.
“Rugrats is one of the most iconic cartoons recognized by fans around the globe, and this original version is one we are taking great care and pride in creating for a brand-new audience,” said Ramsey Naito, President, Nickelodeon Animation. “Having the voice cast behind these special characters come together is one of the essential pieces to making the show recognizable and we can’t wait to watch this talented group bring them to life again.”

From the zany minds of Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan (the creators behind Rick & Morty) comes Solar Opposites, a Hulu series about an alien family forced to live among humans after the destruction of their home planet. Part 3rd Rock From The Sun and part Invader Zim, the wacky jokes come from how they learn to adapt to the mundane nature of human life despite being a significantly more advanced species.

The entire premise presents a hefty amount of suspension of disbelief, since despite having advanced technology they're never able to solve even the most minute problem, and no one seems to care that they're extraterrestrials. If they don't look too hard for logic in this series, viewers are bound to enjoy it.

Fans of the cult classic Nickelodeon cartoon Invader Zim tend to zero in on creator Jhonen Vasquez like the whole series fell out of his head fully formed, which is somewhat understandable, as the show’s art and writing feel much like the singular vision of one lone weirdo. But, get this! Invader Zim was actually a whole production with a budget and a crew and everything! And, Eric Trueheart, one of the writers responsible for some of the most iconic Zim episodes, is here to prove it with The Medium-Sized Book of Zim Scripts: Vol. 1: Pigs ‘n’ Waffles.
I imagine many fans would have been happy with a book packed solely with scripts cover-to-cover. However, there’s a nice structure to what Trueheart has done in this book instead, introducing each script by relating the history of how the idea for the episode was formed and developed, then including the script,...

After winning the Oscar for Best Adapted screenplay for his Nazi satire “Jojo Rabbit,” Taika Waititi has reportedly signed on to co-write, executive produce, and direct some episodes of a limited series from Showtime, “The Auteur.”
The series, which is still in development, would see Waititi adapting the psychedelic graphic novel of the same name by James Callahan and Rick Spears about a filmmaker who enters a downward spiral after making one of Hollywood’s biggest-ever bombs; Jude Law is in talks to star as the main character. Remember the crude, gothic humor of Jhonen Vasquez? I sure do! Invader Zim was such a silly, over the top cartoon that somehow made its way onto Nickelodeon and was not surprisingly canceled after a short second season. The show featured an absurdly screaming alien trying to take over the world with only one lone boy trying to stop him. It featured all things that you wouldn’t think to see in a cartoon at the time like bizarre alien technology, nihilism, and the oppression of children’s innocence. Thanks to Netflix and the power ($$$) of nostalgia, we now have a movie based off these characters that continues like the series never left. Is my childhood fondness for the show going to skew my opinions on...

If you grew up watching Nickelodeon's Invader Zim, chances are you're a cool person with a twisted sense of humor... and repressed trauma. That's because Invader Zim, despite being a kids' show, is absolutely morbid and dark even compared to the likes of Cow and Chicken, Samurai Jack, or the first three seasons of Spongebob Squarepants. It's no wonder Invader Zim only lasted two seasons in Nick.

Here are 10 of those moments in Enter the Florpus.

Back when Nickelodeon preferred making cartoons over making overworked child stars, they produced some really impressive titles. These went down in pop culture as some of the most timeless and relevant kids shows ever. Among those once-in-a-decade gems are Spongebob Squarepants and Fairly Odd Parents, and then there's Invader Zim.

Fans have been eagerly anticipating the return of Jhonen Vasquez’s “Invader Zim” with the release of a new Netflix film titled “Invader Zim: Enter The Florpus”. Despite only lasting two seasons on Nickelodeon, the 2000’s animated series made a huge impact on pop culture and was beloved by fans. The show, which features a small and quite angry alien attempting to take over the earth, pushed boundaries as many of the episodes featured some pretty dark themes for an animated series. Well, the “doom” is about to strike again, as “Invader Zim: Enter The Florpus” is now currently available on Netflix! It’s been over two years since Nickelodeon announced the production of a revival movie of their cult classic series, Jhonen Vasquez’s Invader Zim. It was already a nostalgic dream come true for diehard Zim fans like myself, but then Nickelodeon went the extra mile by recreating the conditions of the show during its original run. Just like they did in the aughts, they greenlit the production and then stopped supporting it entirely, with the seeming intent to bury it without it ever seeing the light of day. What a blast from the past! It’s stuff like this that continues to make Nickelodeon my favorite Viacom subsidiary.

Jhonen Vasquez answered our questions about how Invader Zim has evolved but is mostly still about screaming jerks.
The existence of Invader Zim is unlikely in the first place. For some reason, Nickelodeon approached Jhonen Vasquez—a comic book author whose most famous work up until that point was a series called Johnny the Homicidal Maniac—and asked him if he wanted to make a kids’ cartoon. They regretted it almost immediately, but, even more unlikely, Zim went on to build a rabid cult following that endures over a decade later and which made possible the revival movie, Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus!.
We spoke to Jhonen and the Zim cast about the film last year in mostly vague terms but, now we’ve gotten a chance to see the movie, Jhonen was kind enough to email us answers to some deeper Florpus!-based questions. We...
