Best Standup Act of All Time

This stand-up act is a beautiful collection of impersonations, social/political satire, musical talent, and 'real life' trials and tribulations. It is woven together with an ease that makes the job look easy and keeps you engaged through every aspect. Dana Carvey is a comedic genius and his work truly shines in this incredibly hard to find HBO special. If you have the opportunity to see Critic's Choice you will not only be left smiling, but a little smarter and with many lasting remarks. I saw this act when it first came out and still find myself quoting Dana on a regular basis. If you love his work on Saturday Night Live, you are guaranteed to fall in love with this act.

Carvey is nothing short of brilliant

About 10 years ago Dana Carvey came to Portland OR and I didn't bother going. When I saw 'Critics' Choice' on Comedy Central I kicked myself for not seeing him live. Carvey is one of the most brilliant comedians around today. No exaggeration. He is that good and that funny. His imitation of Jimmy Stewart getting caught with a hooker will bust your gut. Simply the best stand up video since 1981 Bill Cosby; Himself.

    Great!

This is the funniest I have ever seen Dana Carvey. He is my favorite comic, and I can't get enough of this show. Dana Carvey is my idol in the comic world, and I can truly say this is his best show ever. I watch it every time it is on, and I laugh just as much every time. 8*)

Funniest standup routine on TV... ever!

I've seen it many times on Comedy Central, and even when I know the jokes are coming, I burst into laughter every time. Some of the material is slightly dated (O.J., Hugh Grant, etc.) but still very funny.

One of the best stand-up acts I have ever seen

Dana Carvey is hilarious in "Critics Choice". This is one of my favorite acts of all time. I wish that HBO would rerun it so everyone can see the full act since Comedy Central shortens it to 30 minutes. I think that everyone can enjoy "Critics Choice" because Dana Carvey is awesome.

Dana Carvey: I was playing a lot of clubs warming up for this, and I, uh, I played Tahoe, and that was cool. Across the street, Tom Jones was playing. My wife and I went- have you ever seen him? He's such a great singer, but we went to see him, and he's literally... I'm not kidding. He has a THING in his pants, it- it's RIDICULOUS. It's like this, down to his KNEE! And no- he doesn't talk about it, but the whole audience is just STARING at it-

      [open-mouthed shocked look]

Dana Carvey: It's, it's Tom and his Jones, I'm telling you! It is, it's obscene! It's insane! My wife had binoculars, "It's moving, honey! It's moving!" It sang a song, y'know...

[holds mic to his leg while mouthing singing]

Dana Carvey: [imitating Regis Philbin] "Are you ready for this? It was a GIANT PENIS! That's what I'm saying! I'm outta control!"

    • Crazy credits
A dedication at the end of the program says "Good Night Paula, Dex, and Tom," which refers to Dana Carvey's wife, Paula Zwagerman, and their two sons, Dex and Tom. After this dedication, another title card reads, "Yes, Dex, God does have feet. And they're very, very large." this refers to a story Carvey tells in which his (then) 4-year old son, Dex, asked Carvey, "Daddy? Does God have feet?"
