John Malkovich and Gerard Depardieu had already previously played together as the main characters of the adaptation of a french novel: in 1998, they both played respectively as Athos and Porthos in the Man in the Iron Mask.
Christian Clavier plays Thenardier, who in the book (fraudulently) identifies himself as "The Sergeant of Napoleon." Clavier has also played Napoleon himself. An earlier production, Les Miserables (1978) had Ian Holm as Thenardier. Holm has also played Napoleon.
Veronica Ferres was only 35 when this miniseries was made, making her 11 years younger than her on-screen husband, only 10 years older than her eldest on-screen child, and a year younger than Enrico Lo Verso, who played the love interest (later husband) of her former foster-daughter.
The musical version of 'Les Misérables' opened at the Broadway Theater on March 12, 1987 and ran for 6680 performances, making it the third longest running show on Broadway.
