I love "Sonic the Hedgehog" and I watch it religiously. When I heard of "Sonic Underground" I was intrigued. After watching, I think it is worth watching but it is inferior. The animation is very well done, with creative character design and lovely backgrounds. I also liked the theme tune, it was catchy. Also RobotNik's henchman Sleet and Dingo are very entertaining, Sleet is the more entertaining of the two but there is something somewhat endearing about Dingo. The voice acting is good and well served with some decent writing, with Maurice LaMarche coming off best and Jaleel White spirited as the three hedgehogs Sonic, Sonia and Manic. However, Sonia while well voiced here does have an attitude that pisses you off, and I wasn't impressed with Gary Chalk as RobotNik, RobotNik looks the same but he isn't malevolent enough here. While most of the story lines are good, some are predictable, same with the songs they aren't bad but they could have been better timed. Overall, likable and worth watching, but not wholly satisfying. 7/10 Bethany Cox

I never heard of this cartoon until 2002. Unlike the syndicated Adventures of Sonic and the cult favorite SatAM Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic Underground is at a whole different level. Instead of Sonic being a standard hero, he's a prince accompanied by 2 of his Siblings, who he hasn't seen since the day they were infants. One is Manic(a green male hedgehog who was raised as a thief) and the other is Sonia(a free roaming female hedgehog). Their mother(The Queen) had to separated them because of Robotnik taking over Mobius(which is similar to what he did in the previous series).
So the Queen left each of her kids a music medallion which has the power of sound waves and music. When all 3 of the Hedgehog siblings combine them, they become one unbeatable rock and roll team. That can wipe out Robonik's forces of robots.
Throughout the series, the hedgehog trio travels around Mobius in their own van, and try to search for their own mother. As mentioned that when they're reunited again, they'll be able to overthrown Robotnik for good.
Despite it being the weakest of the DiC Entertainment Sonic cartoons. The series does have great animation, character designs, and interesting stories. The down side, it's a disappointment to most Sonic Fans. And it's no where close to being as excellent as the SatAM one.
Since it was made and adapted from Europe, the whole story, theme, and look does look very European. And pretty much something the British would come up with if they were given a task in creating their own Sonic the Hedgehog.
I only seen 9 out of 40 episodes for this series. A few of them are average, but there are some good episodes that are worth watching. Giving Sonic Underground credit in enjoyment.
Overrall not highly recommended for those who liked SatAM Sonic, as very few elements from that series exist in this one. And song haters will avoid it at all costs. To be on the safe side, borrow it or download it to see for your own opinion on it.

So I know a lot of people have seen in and yes to agree with the more varied reviews it's not an amazing show, it just about pases as good in my eyes. One thing that the show does really well is create a Sonic storyline which is a bit out of the norm, admitabley the songs in the show get very tiresome after just a few episodes but they're not a deal breaker.
The characters are okay, they're back story's are explored to a decent extent and it does provide an interesting insight into the Sonic universe. That's pretty much where the praise stops, I mean I like watching the show but as much as I do I'm not blind to seeing it's pitfalls.
The animation is pretty bad, the voices barley sync up with the characters and often the characters replies would be very delayed.
Like a bunch if he other reviewers I was very disappointed with how the show ended, the gang of hedgehogs never found their mother. Instead we were just left with a bog standard final episode!

I've seen a lot of episodes from this series and I love them!OK it may not have all the main characters that we love from SATam but it has new people.OK Sonia's voice is annoying but you get use to it and Manic's pretty cool as well and it has a darkish storyline with the whole mum having to give up her babies in order for them to defeat Robotnik and Robotnik doesn't seem all happy clappy annoying unable to do anything right OK he can't do much right but he seems pretty evil and not drawn to look stupid, like SATam,kinda scary and menacing. The Songs are pretty addictive after a while some may be annoying like Where's there's a will etc but the rest aren't that bad. All in All I love this series way way better then Sonic X but not as much as SATam

Once more unto the breach dear friends. Sonic Underground is a wonderful kind of bad. This thing is Early GI Joe meets Jem and the Holograms wonky yet this actively works in it's favor. It's just trying so hard you can't help but smile at it's earnest attempt at being cool.
The songs are just simply awful outside of 2 or so exceptions depending on who you ask. There is little guitar or drums in any of them which is made rather confusing by scenes of them soundlessly drumming and strumming. I spend most of my time laughing at the static facial features of the characters who are
just always smiling at the worst possible times.
This is pure nostalgia fare and nothing else.

This show makes me angry. So many times there is a good idea, a good concept, something that could make this show be better. It is been solved and taken care of in the most stupid and insulting way possible. There is a good and unteresting story and world within here. Just nobody tried to focus enough on it.

"Sonic Underground" is the last Sonic cartoon to be produced by DIC Entertainment. And it was definitely the most farthest away from the Sonic games of any of the Sonic shows. What I mean by that is. "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" was somewhat close to the games. It had a similar story, but everything was surreal and very Felix the Cat like. The second one "Sonic the Hedgehog" or "Sonic SatAM" was close to the games, but it made the story bigger, more complex, more interesting and it most likely took place after the games due to Robotnik being ruler of Mobius. The next one was a direct-to-video movie that was very close to the games, except the fact that it got some names wrong, like Planet Mobius being instead called Planet Freedom. But "Sonic Underground" has barely anything to do with the original Sonic story-line. For some reason now Sonic is a prince and has a brother and sister. Which is very weird if you ask me. Also the only familiar characters in the show are Sonic, Robotnik, Uncle Chuck, and Knuckles. Tails is gone, Sally's gone, Snively's gone, Antoine's gone, Bunnie's gone, Rotor's gone, Dulcy's gone, King Acorn's gone, Naugus's gone. And this version of Robotnik is really quite boring. The Robotnik in the Sonic games was an evil, goofy-looking, scientist bent on ruling Mobius. In Sonic SatAM and the Sonic comics he was the same, only more sinister, creepy-looking, menacing, and evil. In this one he has a very bad voice actor who doesn't even come close to the wonderful job Jim Cummings did in Sonic SatAM, and also his personality here is just boring.
Sonic's brother and sister are BOTH voiced by Jaleel White, and he is good as Sonic and Manic, but he sounds WAY too much like Steve Urkel for Sonia. There are plenty of voice actresses out there that could've done better than Jaleel White did as Sonia. There's Kath Soucie, Nancy Cartwright, Tress MacNeile, E.G. Daily, Candi Milo, Carolyn Lawrence, Christine Cavanaugh, and many more. I just don't understand why he had to play her too. And plus she is very annoying. She cares only only about her hair, her clothes, and her looks, and that all makes her a very annoying character. Also the story of them being separated from their mother is just..... not Sonic. And I still hate the idea of Sonic being a prince. However despite my complaints there are a few good things about the show:
Overall this show isn't that good, but it does have some good points. I think instead of this they should've done a sequel to Sonic SatAM, which was in fact Ben Hurst's original plan for this show. Still this show was overall a disappointment, and was actually kind of an annoying show.

Sonic Underground was a little bit like the SatAM series but not a whole lot because all the other freedom fighters from the SatAM are left out and so is Snively and the power rings. But at least this series still has the whole robotisizing thing. Another thing is that Sonic's Uncle Chuck was only in the first episode and they never see each other again. Another thing that was different was the way the SwatBots looked in this series. Sonic Underground is the 3rd Sonic cartoon that came out 2 years later after Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) was canceled again off of USA Network showing reruns.
In this cartoon, Sonic and his siblings Manic (Sonic's brother) and Sonia (Sonic's sister) are the hit rock 'n' roll band on Mobius called the Sonic Underground but in reality they are the children of the lost Queen Aleena, the queen of Mobius. Now Sonic, Manic and Sonia must fight Dr. Robotnik and save the planet Mobius and find their mother with the aid of their medallions. I missed Tails and the other freedom fighters from the 1993 ABC Series but at least I was glad that Knuckles the Echidna was in this series because I think Knuckles is one of my favorite characters in the whole Sonic the Hedgehog franchise along with Sonic! Plus I thought Manic and Cyrus were cool characters also! Especially Manic because Manic has that lay back and be cool sort of attitude plus I think he looks cool!
The only one thing I didn't like about this show was Gary Chalk doing the voice of Dr. Robotnik because he didn't make Dr. Robotnik sound scary and evil! I think Jim Cummings should have done this Sonic cartoon just like he did the voice of Dr. Robotnik from the ABC SatAM version. Or I think Mark Hamill would have done a good job at doing the voice of Dr. Robotnik since he is pretty good at doing creepy villain voices. But the only thing I liked about Dr. Robotnik in this series was that he looked exactly the same as he did in the SatAM Sonic cartoon! Also I liked Robotnik's bounty hunters, Sleet and Dingo. I liked Sleet better than Dingo because I thought Sleet was cool looking and I thought Maurice LaMarche was excellent to provide the voice of Sleet! Dingo I thought was stupid and funny. I didn't think Dingo was stupid as in I didn't like him he is just stupid as in not very smart as Sleet.
Why did this show have to last only one season? I think this show deserved more than one season! Just like the Sonic SatAM cartoon got to have more than one season! I first discovered this series when I was checking what was on TV the next day and I saw Sonic Underground on there and I asked myself, "Since when did Sonic come up with another cartoon?". At first I thought it would be a series that picked up where Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) left off but instead it sort of looked like a spin-off or a prequel. This series was pretty good along with Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) and Sonic X! This series also has great animation!

Near the start of the new millennium, sega launched a new round of heavy advertising for its main franchises, one of which was sonic the hedgehog. To enhance the hype, they commissioned a new cartoon from DIC entertainment, the same company that did the previous 2 Sonic cartoons. The result was SONIC UNDERGROUND, a curious little series with many questionable Creative decisions.
For a start, they got the head writer of the more serious SONIC THE HEDGEHOG cartoon on board for plotting SONIC UNDERGROUND. Instead of continuing that cult classic, which many fans were clamouring for, they incorporated broad strokes events and loose elements of that story into a whole new story unrelated to past animated series or games. In this new continuity, Sonic and his siblings Sonia and Manic are the heirs to the throne but the evil Doctor Robotnik launches a coup and took over the royal capital of mobotropolis. Instead of establishing a pollution spewing all powerful empire of machine Troops and servants created from roboticizing civilians, Robotnik in this show is content to let the rich and powerful civilians remain untouched so long as they do as he says and do not get in his way. Only the lower castes were roboticised. As such there are populated towns and much more in the way of talking critter side characters contributing to the plots of episodes.
In terms of tone, it is no where near the comedic camp of ADVENTURES OF SONIC THE HEDGEHOG but it is also much lighter than the post apocalyptic dystopia of SONIC THE HEDGEHOG. The stakes are not as dire, the villains are still evil but not as monstrous, and the world is "friendlier" with the episodes consisting of the 3 Hedgehog siblings travelling the globe in search of allies, clues to locate their mother and to fulfill a prophesy to take back their kingdom.
The second and most divisive creative decision was....the songs. No this is not Sonic The Musical, though it might have been better if it was. In every episode, at least one of the sibling Hedgehogs will whip out their magical instrument (electric guitar for sonic, drum set for manic, and keyboard for Sonia) and start this late 90s MTV music video sequence full of cheap visual tricks like multiple split screens, fade ins, cross dissolves etc. Again, I have nothing against a good musical but the transition between the episode story and the sudden music video is so jarring. There are a few catchy songs but the majority are a cheesy dated mix of 90s pop and rock tunes which border on cringe. A pity since they are generally well sung and with voices that sound much better than the characters' speaking voices. Namely because Sonic, Sonia and Manic are voiced by Jaleel White, Jaleel White doing falsetto, and Jaleel White doing surfer dude.
Having the same guy doing all 3 main voices, including a female character's voice, really does not work especially when at times the voices seem to slip into each other like Manic would suddenly talk like Sonic or Sonic himself would have that higher Sonia pitch. The other characters' voice actors do a decent job with the cheesy material they are given, and fan favourites like Knuckles do appear later on. However some of the casting choices just do not seem to fit. Like Doctor Robotnik is played by Garry Chalk, sounding exactly like his Optimus Primal role from BEAST WARS. For Knuckles he is played by Brian Drummond and one would expect a gruff warrior type voice similar to his Zechs Merquise role from GUNDAM WING but he sounds like a whiny teenage geek.
The animation on SONIC UNDERGROUND is equally hit or miss. Other traditional animated contemporaries in 1999 include series like Redwall, Big Guy and Rusty, and Batman Beyond in the west, along with Digimon, Monster Rancher, and Zoids in the east. No matter how you compared, SONIC UNDERGROUND's animation does not hold up. While the character models are much more consistent and there are some exceedingly well animated sequences, these are far in between. There are a fair share of animation mistakes, mostly in compositing, and A lot of the animation comes across as lazy. For example, in past SONIC cartoons when sonic ran they would animate his full body motions of running with at most his feet being a blur. In SONIC UNDERGROUND the typical portrayal of Super speed is to reduce Sonic to a glowing blue smear streaking across the screen. There is also reused and looped animation which pop up most frequently in the previously mentioned music video segments.
The series itself ended with no resolution to any of the ongoing plot lines. Though there is a Small segment of fans who do like the unorthodox approach, it never got the level of fan following that SONIC THE HEDGEHOG did Nor did it achieve the memetic status of ADVENTURES. Between the indecisive tone, juvenile writing that did not match the epic fantasy setup, and the comparatively mediocre visuals I would consider SONIC UNDERGROUND less of a classic and more a mere curiosity.

I've only seen a few episodes of this series, but I can tell you that this show is not that good.
Characters Well, we've got Sonic in there and Eggman (or Robotnik, whatever) Knuckles also appears along with Athair and Uncle Chuck, (Archie Comics) and of course there's Sonic's triplet brother and sister (?) and of course we all remember Sleet and Dingo (?)
What? What about Tails or Amy? Apparently, DIC thought that having the recognisable characters whom we have come to know and love was a bad idea so make way for these forgettable idiots.
Manic, the cactus-green kleptomaniac hedgehog and Sonia, the pink pansy princess hedgehog.
Story
Queen Aleena, Sonic's mother whom we have never heard of, is warned by some freaky reptilian-anteater (I forget to mention that they had aliens in this show as well) that Robotnik will somehow take over the planet of Mobius without actually doing anything. Since Aleena apparently thought ahead and gave her three young children magic pendants that turn into weapons and musical instruments, she sends hem to adoptive families to wait until the time is right. How she knows when the time is right, I don't know, but she just does.
After all three bushpig's families are pwn3d by robots, they meet up and become an underground rock band for some reason. (and yet they play no rock songs) and travel Morbid Mobius to find their mother, even tough she tends to directly intervene with their battles.
Wait, if she knows their exact location, why doesn't she just meet them there and end this awful series?
Animation
NO! I keep hearing people going on and on about how well this series was animated and how great the character designs are, even the people who DON'T like it. Get it through your heads, this series is badly animated. Here's an example. In one scene, while The Sonic Unrground (Yes, it's meant to be said with a The) is in a sewer, some robots come and we see their commander, Sleet the Wolf, pointing at the hedgehogs while standing perfectly still. His mouth is also open even tough he isn't saying anything so it looks he has lockjaw. And Sonic and Manic just look fat. Nothing looks like it should be in Sonic the Hedgehog.
Voices
Yeaaaah....not that great. Jaleel White voices Sonic again like the other series, but he also voices Manic and Sonia. Manic is given a surfer-dude accent, but he speaks to damned fast! Most of the time he sound like he forgets to add punctuation to his words. Sonia's meant to be a girl, so why is she being voiced by a man?
They also have this annoying rule in which they must cram one song into every single episode. I have nothing against musicals, but it just doesn't work as a TV series. If it was a short series, like 6 episodes maybe, but not 40. The special effects they have in these music videos are awful. You could get most of these effects on an 80s computer game! Also, the singing voices sound nothing like the real voices. In short, I like muffins.

In 1999, the Dreamcast was planning to be released in North America, so after a half a decade of now Sonic 'toons, Sega put DiC to the task. And yeah, a lot of flaws are evident, Sonic's design is outdated, probably because it's set in the same town as SatAm, which came out in '93, but still...

This is one show I recommend. I have been a fan of this show for almost a year now, and always loved it. This show IS related to a previously released series back in 1993, but because it lacks certain characters from the old series, it was never given a chance. I personally am a fan of Sonic Underground, so I recommend it!

To be fair, I DID watch this when I was younger but got past like 4 or 5 episodes because I got bored. I remember cringing at the intro even when I was like 8 or 9 and asking myself, "How do any of these characters even TIE IN! to any of the Sonic games?!" Sonic is not supposed to be a manipulated character to be made a cartoon, He is honestly a video game character who doesn't need his own show or reboot. I actually found stuff in Sonic X less cringey than this. But I still hate Sonic X and saying it is less cringey than Sonic Underground is not saying much. I really did not enjoy this show as much as I did when I was younger and I feel its very dumb for Sonic to magically have a brother and a sister and fight Robotnik with freaking instruments. This show is probably why we have so many Sonic fan characters and Fan fiction today. I really... REALLY don't like this show
This show is not good. It has a lot of problems that make it mediocre. Whether the rushed origin story, the pacing going at a thousand miles a minute, poorly written characters and not even COMPLETING its broken story. It feels like a cash grab that was fundamentally flawed. And while it has some diamonds in the rough, it's not worth watching it as the show's broken world building and pacing brings it down. Do NOT watch this mess

Wow! This is a really cute, fun, and entertaining show based on a series of classic video gamesgame. I said that because I watch this on DVD with my 5-year-old nephew from time to time. It's hard to say which which episode I like the best. Still it's really cute, fun, and entertaining show based on a series of classic video games. Also, it's hard to say which mishap is my favorite. In addition, I love it when the line, "I hate that hedgehog!" is yelled. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that the people at DiC Enterprises and NCircle really know how to entertain children of all ages. Now, in conclusion, if you have children, nieces, or nephews, I strongly recommend this really cute, fun, and entertaining show based on a series of classic video games. I guarantee you that they will enjoy it.

This show is great! The setting takes place in an apocalyptic future where Robotnik is the head of the oppressive government and Sonic and his siblings Manic and Sonia fight for freedom. They came up with some interesting show elements for this, like the alternate universes, other cultures, experiments, oracles, and people in danger. Sleet the wolf/dog was a cool character.
SU had excellent animation, but it did take place in a dingy city, so that might have lessened the impact. I liked the music-video songs that they sang; some were good. All the intrigue of the hedgehogs trying to find their mother the queen, Sonia getting mixed up in Robotnik's politics because of her friend Bartleby, the character humor, nice music and sound effects, and the variety of settings and plots makes this one of the best cartoons I've seen! This was my favorite show when it aired. I have seen pretty much all the episodes. However, it was a little repetitive sometimes with the constant escape from SWAT bots and Sonic's constant mentioning of chili dogs. Sonic Underground is much better than this new Sonic X series, which has slower, less interesting plots.

I first watched the series when I was ten years old and loved it. I hadn't watched the older sonic cartoons so I didn't mind the big changes they made for this show. Manic was my favorite character, he's really cool and funny. The bounty hunters Sleet and Dingo are also great for the failing villains. I liked the story lines to it and the episodes were fun and entertaining. I adored the real 'freedom fighter' theme it has and the action parts.
The only things wrong with this show are that it was never given an ending, due to the show being cancelled, and people over the age of ten will hate the songs.
Overall, I think it's a good cartoon that you can watch over and over. However, if you're a big sonic fan, you probably won't like it because it's different to what you're used to and it doesn't have some of the characters from the old ones.

I loved Sonic Underground when i was a kid and Still do to this day. I unfortunately will probably never see this show in a box set of DVD's here in Canada. Oh well I still run around trying to be Sonic or Manic, or Sonia whichever suites my fancy at the time. ^_^ Oh and sometimes I play Knux too! I watch a lot of old cartoons but Sonic Underground has to be one of my fav top tens. Did anyone know the singing voice for Sonic in Sonic Underground now plays Martin Mystery?! I didn't till my brother pointed it out to me. :) But I know Sonic will be around for years to come and I will be there for every new show, comic, game, or toy. And when Sonic Underground does come out on DVD here in Canada, I'm gonna be one of the first there to get it!
