This film was director Shankar Nag's remake of his own, critically acclaimed Kannada film "Minchina Ota" (1980). This was his only Hindi film. His brother, actor Anant Nag, worked in both the films.
The film was shot in a real life prison. Though the actors were junior artiste.
Ranjeet's brother produced the film and it ran into several financial loses. Ranjeet put the blame on Prakash Mehra. Ranjeet's dates were booked with Prakash Mehra for Namak Halaal and he would force Ranjeet to cancel his dates Lalach and shoot for Namak Halaal.
