A superior performance with a brilliant Migenes

That is not to say that the Carole Farley performance isn't good, it is in fact extremely good. But I actually consider this 1990 production superior. La Voix Humaine is not my favourite Poulenc work(Dialogue Des Carmelites) but it still has his distinctive style and has an interesting scenario. The production values in this performance are really quite lovely to watch, and photographed beautifully, while the stage direction is involving and makes the most of this one-person-on-stage scenario. Part of the reason why I prefer this version to Farley's is due to the orchestral playing. Helped by the conducting baton of Georges Pretre, the quality is more lyrical and more French-sounding. Another reason is the performance of Julia Migenes. Carole Farley was wonderful in the role, but Migenes' is close to a tour-De-force with a more sensuous voice and a very conflicted(in character) but still arresting stage presence. I consider her a superb singing-actress(her Carmen is one of the best there is and she was an excellent Lulu also), and here is a great example of why I think so. Overall, thoroughly enjoyable and helped hugely by Migenes' performance. 9/10 Bethany Cox
