Big things are about to happen on Dune: Prophecy, as the HBO prequel series enters the back half of its six-episode season this Sunday. That’s the buzz from several cast members and an executive producer who cited the fourth episode as a favorite.
The official synopsis for the episode “Twice Born” tells us that after nearly all the acolytes have the same nightmare, Reverend Mother Tula (Olivia Williams) attempts to understand the origins of their dreams. Mother Superior Valya meanwhile sets in motion her plan to redeem House Harkonnen.

Indie genre director Mickey Keating, who broke out with films such as 2015’s “Darling” and 2016’s “Carnage Park,” has wrapped shooting on his latest movie, the crime drama “Crooks.”
The film stars Keith Kupferer (“Ghostlight”), Angela Trimbur (“Quiz Lady”), Chase Williamson (“John Dies At the End”) and Melora Walters (“Magnolia”).
Per the logline, “Two small-time crooks rob a mob-run poker game in Chicago. Things immediately go wrong, resulting in a high-stakes adventure through the Midwest.”
“’Crooks’ is an incredible opportunity for me to break into the crime movie genre, which I’ve been hoping to do since I started my career,” Keating said in a statement. “This film is a highly stylized celebration of aesthetics ranging from noir to heist to western. I think anyone familiar with my work will see this as a natural progression from my previous films.”

Many actors have played Count Dracula over the years, but who is the best? My vote goes to Max Schreck in "Nosferatu." His is a truly nightmarish creature, feral and pestilent, stripped to the barest vestige of humanity after centuries of scuttling around in the shadows. Sure, his character is called "Count Orlok," but that name change and other tweaks didn't fool anybody, resulting in a lawsuit from Bram Stoker's estate that almost wiped the film from existence.
But with most movie fans, you have a two-way tussle between Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee. Lugosi's classic Universal monster is regal and intense, with a hypnotic gaze and a much-imitated accent. Crucially, though, he just isn't very scary.
Lee played the Count in Terence Fisher's racy 1958 Hammer adaptation of "Dracula," pairing him with Peter Cushing as his adversary, Van Helsing. He portrayed the vampire as a lustful, ferocious predator,...

Days after my episode of “Under The Banner of Heaven” premiered, I received a private message on Twitter from a Mormon consultant on the show though we never managed to connect during the shoot. “I just wanted you to know how beautiful your episode turned out. The response here in Utah has been epic. Every day I’m receiving texts from ex-Mormons (and some current Lds) who absolutely loved it. So many people are resonating with how beautifully you and Andrew [Garfield] captured the pain of a faith crisis.”
The response feels both remarkable and especially rewarding to me, who is neither Mormon nor born and raised in Utah. I was born (and grew up) in the Philippines, the only predominantly Catholic country in Asia. I had a Catholic education from kindergarten to college. As a grade-schooler, I had a phase of being so devout that for years I was a...

Critics’ Week, the sidebar dedicated to first and second features that runs alongside the Cannes Film Festival, is launching a new award.
Called The French Touch Prize of the Jury, the award is being backed by a French organization dedicated to promoting creative and cultural industries.
“The French Touch is not just an economic sector, it’s also the French spirit, creativity, dreams and audacity,” said Critics’ Week.
The org said it aimed at gathering, connecting and aggregating talent from cultural and creatives industries in France. Although Critics’ Week is an international film sidebar, it traditionally showcases many films directed by emerging French directors.
The other prizes handed out by Critics’ Week are the Grand Prize, the Louis Roederer prize of the Revelation, the best actor and the Discovery prize for best short film.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the final series of Search Party, including the finale “Revelation.”
Enlightenment isn’t glorious, but gory and gross look in the series finale of HBO Max’s Search Party.
In the final hours of the dark comedy, created by Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers, Dory (Alia Shawkat) brings about the end of the world, after her quest to spread joy and love in the form of a pill backfires.
In true Search Party fashion, Dory’s intentions to do right by others, and selfishly herself, once again evolve into a much more complicated and fatal scenario that puts everyone around her at risk.
“I hate to say it babe, but you did it again,” Dory’s ever-faithful friend, and brief lover, Portia (Meredith Hagner) says. “Except it’s way worse this time.”

This article contains spoilers for Masters of the Universe: Revelation part 2.
The end of Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 2 dropped a huge bomb on the audience. Skeletor was overpowered by none other than someone seemingly working for Hordak, the main villain of the original 1985 She-Ra series. It blew open the doors of the world of MoTU: Revelation and made it seem like elements of She-Ra could be a major part of any potential second season. However, MoTU: Revelation executive producer Kevin Smith tells us that isn’t for certain.
“The only thing that I’ve been told over and over again is the properties are owned by two different companies,” Smith says. “Masters of the Universe is owned by Mattel. The She-Ra figures are owned by Mattel but (animated) She-Ra is owned by DreamWorks.”
Running from 2018 to 2020, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power was released on Netflix and produced by DreamWorks.

The Masters of the Universe franchise is experiencing a major resurgence, with three new series on Netflix after a drought of animated content after the 2002 Motu series ended in 2004. The new era has been an altogether unexpected one for the franchise. Leading off with a new version of She-Ra, a character not seen in animation since the ‘80s, the show boldly aimed its stories at a new and more diverse group of viewers. Even with its eschewing of direct connections to He-Man the show delighted in its references and use of the wider Motu mythology.
Then we got Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Where many updates of old franchises simply take concepts and do a modern take on them, Revelation instead was a love letter to fans of the franchise. It wasn’t a reboot of He-Man, it was a continuation of the original show. It was filled to the brim with references and callbacks,...

Despite it being 2021 and not, say, 1984, there’s A Lot of Masters of the Universe in the pop culture panorama at the moment. Not only are toy aisles of major stores carrying its quasi-vintage-styled items—peddled to a new generation—brandishing the classic blue logo bursting through red rocks, but the streaming arena of Netflix is doubling down on the franchise, having first unveiled animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation in July. Now, the second part of this double-header (which would have been a triple-header had recent live-action movie plans not fizzled), CG animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, has heralded its imminent arrival with a trailer.
With just a quick glance at the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe trailer, it becomes quite clear that the series is not only a different take on the franchise, but a ground-up reinvention of the classic story—albeit one that,...

Bringing back He-Man and the Master of the Universe was always a no brainer. The original cartoon, which ran for just two years back in mid 80s, while massively derivative was also massively influential. Netflix had already hit creative paydirt with its Anime-influenced She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, the smart, overtly queer, rainbow-filled delight that wrapped up its run in 2020.
Bringing Adora’s super-swole brother back was an obvious move. That Kevin Smith was at the helm, promising a direct follow up to the old cartoons and featuring barely-messed-with character designs, only sharpened the excitement.
He-Man, of course, has been rebooted before – three times, in fact, if you count the 1987 live action film – and never especially successfully. Those previous versions, as with She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, were specifically designed to take the frame of the original story and drape a more up-to-date adventure for modern kids over it.

Kevin Smith’s animated Netflix series “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” is the latest bit of franchise IP to become the victim of toxic fandom. Similar to Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Smith’s direct sequel series to “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” (1983-85) is being review bombed on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb and trolled on social media for taking the franchise in directions fans don’t agree (via Variety). A lot of the toxic backlash stems from Smith’s decision to seemingly kill off main characters He-Man and Skeletor in the pilot episode. The twist allows supporting characters like the female warrior Teela to assume lead roles as they search for magic that can bring He-Man back.
“I know there’s some people that are like, ‘Hey, man, this show’s woke,’” Smith told Variety about the backlash. “I’m like,...

Premiering in 2018, Netflix’s She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is a reimagining of the classic ‘80s She-Ra series, which itself was a spin-off of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Using She-Ra’s original ideas and concepts as a springboard, the team behind it updated everything for modern audiences. A deeper story, character designs with tons of variety, and especially more diversity is woven in the series.
This and so much more won the show an army of fans, many of whom were brand new to the wider Masters of the Universe (Motu) franchise. This set the standard for what Motu was for them and the series they’d use to judge all other entries by. With Masters of the Universe: Revelation about to hit Netflix, many She-Ra fans might be wondering if this series is something they’ll enjoy.
What might be helpful to know is the primary difference between the two.

The new Netflix series Masters of the Universe: Revelation isn’t just another reboot of a beloved franchise from back in the day. In fact, it’s not a reboot at all! Motu: Revelation is the truly rare Sequel series to an ‘80s animated series. Yes, that’s right, we aren’t getting He-Man rebooted yet again (remember that time He-Man went into space?) but instead a full-on sequel to the original 130-episode Filmation TV series.
With that in mind, how much about the original He-Man series is needed to enjoy Motu: Revelation? Is this something more casual fans can enjoy or do you need to be a hardcore He-Man fan? Can a new fan jump in here?
What you need to know from the jump is that Masters of the Universe: Revelation was made specifically with He-Man fans in mind. In fact there might never have been a new...

While Masters of the Universe: Revelation reignites Mattel’s toy-spawning fantasy franchise, the Kevin Smith-conceived Netflix animated series arrives in the recent wake of an ill-fated film project. Indeed, Sony/Columbia settled on up-and-coming directors Aaron Nee and Adam Nee to conjure new live-action exploits of He-Man in the land of Eternia, which progressed to pre-production and cast Noah Centineo in the starring role before the pandemic put an end to the endeavor. Interestingly, David S. Goyer, who wrote an early draft of the Masters of the Universe screenplay, reveals what would have been a rather unique dynamic at its center.
Contrasting with the potentially-controversial protagonist direction hinted in early reviews for Revelation, the driving concept for the long-planned Masters of the Universe live-action movie was to focus on the friendship between He-Man and his loyal giant green, orange-striped tiger steed, Battle Cat, as Goyer reveals to THR. 20 years later, Shrek remains a pop culture phenomenon, but the film’s road to hitting the big screen wasn’t pretty.
“Today, it’s difficult to imagine Shrek as anything but an instant hit. After all, the subject of the 1990 children’s book was always destined for Hollywood stardom, says producer John H. Williams. ‘I thought Shrek was outrageous, irreverent, iconoclastic, gross, and just a lot of fun,” Williams says in the production notes for the 2001 movie. “He was a great movie character in search of a movie.'”

Organisers for the Revelation Perth International Film Festival have been forced to alter the event in light of the Western Australian government’s 4-day lockdown order, cancelling the opening night and the following day of programming.
Premier Mark McGowan announced the circuit-breaker lockdown yesterday evening after the state’s outbreak grew to three cases, with temporary restrictions in place from today until 12.01am on Saturday, July 3.
As a result, Revelation’s planned opening night on Thursday, an event screening of Cooper Raiff’s SXSW winner Freshman Year, has been scrapped, along with all screenings for the next day. Patrons who hold tickets will be refunded.
Revelation director Richard Sowada said he was looking forward with optimism to lockdown lifting on and the festival continuing until July 11 as planned.
“The program picks up as soon as lockdown lifts – we come out of lockdown ready to rock on Saturday 3 July (for the moment),” he said.

Mattel Television and Netflix released the first look “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” and it turns out the characters — including He-Man, Skeletor, Teela and Orko — look a lot like they did on the beloved 1980s animated series “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,” just a bit glowed up.
They also announced the show will premiere globally on July 23.
Since the series was announced in 2019, fans have been speculating just what executive producer and showrunner Kevin Smith — writer-director of “Clerks,” “Chasing Amy” and “Dogma” — would be doing with the property. As the images make clear, Smith and the team at Powerhouse Animation (also the animation studio behind Netflix’s “Castlevania” series) are paying homage not just to the look of the original series, but its storylines as well.

Filmmakers and musicians will once again explore an alternate avenue of collaboration at this year’s Revelation Perth International Film Festival via the Blind Date competition.
Awarded live at the Luna Cinemas during the festival in July, the competition connects musicians and aspiring filmmakers to create video clips without the two sides ever meeting.
Each artist can share two songs for filmmakers to choose from, with Blind Date’s ringmaster and mastermind, Jen Jamieson, confirming whether selections are available – and if the musicians are keen to appear in their videos.
Revelation Perth International Film Festival director Richard Sowada said the connection between the festival and music was a time-honoured tradition.
“Rev started life in the basement back room of Perth’s Greenwich jazz club and we’ve always been passionate about supporting independent artists,” he said.
“Many great directors cut their teeth making music videos, including the likes of David Fincher,...

I think we can all agree that the 2005 redesign of the Daleks was a huge success, right? Nobody had any issues with them surely? Apart from Raymond Cusick, who originally designed them in 1963, and noted in Doctor Who Confidential ‘To them rivets and bolts are archaic.’ So obviously you can’t please everyone.
Last Thursday, which was approximately four years ago, the Radio Times was released with a new Dalek design on the cover. The slightly taller and thinner black Dalek is based on the Reconnaissance Dalek from the 2018 special ‘Resolution’, something which executive producer Chris Chibnall says is a plot point, describing the 2020 special as a sort of sequel to that episode. It looks better in the trailer than it does in a static image, and it’s been implied that the new design is a variant rather than the standard model.

When Fti was consolidated into Screenwest back in 2017, the annual Wa Screen Awards disappeared with it.
However, Revelation Perth International Film Festival director Richard Sowada has sought to bring them back, giving the state’s industry an awards platform for the first time in nearly five years.
Newly dubbed the Western Australian Screen Culture Awards, the event will bookend Revelation in mid-December.
Sowada has somewhat reimagined the honours, with a focus on innovation and achievement. Categories span all screen genres, from shorts, features and docos, through to VR/Ar, games, moving image art and installation.
The aim is to recognise the extraordinary growth and current vibracy of the Western Australian industry; Sowada posits that when he started Revelation back in 1997, Wa produced a feature film every three years.
“Over the years, particularly in the last six years or so, it’s exploded,” he tells If.

Laurel Canyon, Epix’s upcoming two-part docuseries directed by Alison Elwood, captures the sounds which came together in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. Starting in the mid-sixties, the area became a Shangri-La as musicians from all genres moved to the country, which was four minutes out of the city.
