Michael Bay is heading to television.

The director, known for his muscular and high-revving big-screen action franchises such as Bad Boys and Transformers, is in talks to direct Barbaric, an acerbic fantasy series based on the best-selling Vault Comics title.

Netflix has picked up the bold-faced series package, which it will develop with A+E Studios.

Sam Claflin and Patrick Stewart are attached to star in the series, which will be written and exec produced by Sheldon Turner, known for his feature credits such as Up in the Air and X-Men: First Class.

Joining the exec producing team are Jennifer Klein, Turner’s partner at 100% Productions, which has a first-look deal with A+E, as well as F.J. DeSanto and Damian Wassel of Vault Comics. Giving readers an action-packed and blood-filled yet humorous story that will please any fantasy fan, I'm always suggesting it to new and lifelong comic book readers alike. I'm thrilled that Vault Comics has provided us with the entire first issue of Barbaric #1 exclusively for Daily Dead readers, along with an extended preview of the first issue in the upcoming standalone spinoff series Queen of Swords!

Barbaric #1: Barbaric #1 is collected with the other two issues as part of Barbaric Vol. 1: Murderable Offenses:

Owen the Barbarian has been cursed to do good with what remains of his life. His bloodthirsty weapon, Axe, has become his moral compass with a drinking problem.

It was a swing that paid off.

In 2021, Vault Comics put out Barbaric, a comic book featuring a talking demonic ax and Owen, a barbarian looking for redemption. It proved to be a surprise, massive hit for the indie publisher, selling over 250,000 copies to date.

Barbaric has now set the company on a path of expanding the title into franchise territory. It is not only planning new and multiple arcs for the main Barbaric book but also launching a special and a novelization.

And this spring, it will also debut its first Barbaric spinoff, Queen of Swords. The story centers on a barbarian, an assassin, and a witch who form an uneasy alliance in order to obtain a magical relic. And yes, there is another demonically possessed weapon, in this case, a sassy talking sword. Vault is describing the book as Red Sonja meets Dungeons & Dragons.

Cassar currently serves as executive producer and director on Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville. His Cassar Filmworks banner, which he runs alongside executive Patrick Munroe, has multiple projects in the pipeline in various stages of development.
