One of the earliest commercially sponsored programs on television, beginning in September 1944, seen on the rudimentary NBC Television Network (New York, Philadelphia and Schenectady, NY). In 1944, there were only roughly 5000 television sets in operation, mostly in New York City and mostly in bars and taverns. Therefore, sporting events were a natural for this audience and Gillette was a natural as a sponsor.
