Swarg Narak caused Sanjeev Kumar and Shabana Azmi's friendship to end for ever. Shabana had told mutual friends she hated Sanjeev's performance in the film. It was his worst. Sanjeev took offense to this and took it personally. Shabana told him she was speaking as his fan,that's all. Sanjeev knew the real reason for her comment. Shabana had started working with Shyam Benegal and other parallel film makers. She felt she was greater than regular Hindi film actors in commercial films. Sanjeev Kumar was also convinced Shabana Azmi had brain washed Naseerudin Shah against Sanjeev. Naseeruddin use to always praise Sanjeev. Finally Naseeruddin stated he had stopped being Sanjeev's fan after Khilona. The last performance of Sanjeev's that was good was Aandhi. Things got worse while filming Devtaa. They were shooting the climax scene and Sanjeev Kumar was yelling on top of his lungs. Shabana sent a message to Sanjeev thru her hair dresser to lower his voice. It would make his performance more real. Sanjeev blew up again. Here was Shabana trying to coach him on acting. Sanjeev stated that Devtaa was made by south producer's who wanted loud performances. But he did not like her interference. Some even suggested that it was Rajesh Khanna who was working with Shabana who was influencing her to turn against Sanjeev. Sanjeev and Rajesh had a long history of hatred for years. Even during the filming of Namkeen, Shabana and Sanjeev would stay far apart from each other .
