According to Alec Baldwin (Jabez Stone), this movie was extensively re-edited after it came into the possession of Bob Yari Productions, and no longer bears any resemblance to its original form or to the Benet short story, hence the title change. Baldwin has since requested that his name be removed from the credits as director and producer.
Long known as "The Devil and Daniel Webster", the film's title was changed to "Shortcut to Happiness" after being acquired by Bob Yari productions and being heavily re-edited.
Filming was completed in 2001, but this movie was shelved for two years, due to lack of funds to complete post-production. However, My Own Worst Enemy Productions acquired the rights to the title and it was released in 2007.
It took six years between the completion of the film and its release. During that time, star Jennifer Love Hewitt listed it as one of the films she starred in, while appearing as a guest voice on a 2002 episode of Family Guy, Stuck Together, Torn Apart (2002), as it was scheduled for release before the episode aired. However, the movie was shelved and did not receive any release until 2007, five years after that episode aired.
