Haku (aka Meng) had only appeared at the January WCW PPV, entitled 'Sin', one week before this event, in which he became the promotion's final Hardcore champion.
Kane broke the record for most eliminations in a single Royal Rumble with 11. He eliminated Grand Master Sexay, Steve Blackman, Al Snow, Raven, Perry Saturn, Honky Tonk Man, Tazz, Crash Holly, Albert, Scotty 2 Hotty (jointly with The Undertaker) and The Rock.
Eight wrestlers made their first appearance in the Royal Rumble match: Jeff Hardy, Bull Buchanan, Matt Hardy, Raven, Perry Saturn, Tazz, K-Kwik, and William Regal.
