This game was released at the height of the Attitude boom when factions such as DX2000, The Union, and Right To Censor angles were taking place from 1999 to 2000.
THQ began developing this game when certain wrestlers where still on the WWF roster, but had to be removed for the final release. Their attire and faces can still be found in create a wrestler. Some of them where "Mosh and Thrasher" aka "The Headbangers"
The Hulk Hogan theme "Real American" appears in this game as Gerald Brisco and Pat Patterson's theme music because they were using it at the time during their "Mr McMahon's" stooges tag team who also parodied Hulk Hogan's taunts at the time. Despite this, Hulk Hogan was still contracted to WCW and does not appear in this game. WWF/WWE owns the rights to the song, and Hogan had a similar song titled "American Made" for his WCW run.
No Mercy's life span carried on for over a decade after the game's release because it was considered the best wrestling system, and due to emulation created hacks and graphic swaps that allowed people to create and input just about anyone they wanted with the help of Photoshop.
