Note: This story contains spoilers from the “Brilliant Minds” series premiere.
“Brilliant Minds” introduces Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf, a neurologist whose unique life and skillset is loosely drawn from the acclaimed Oliver Sacks — down to the complex relationships laid out the NBC procedural’s pilot.
“It’s a contemporary version of that character, but it’s not biographical,” showrunner Michael Grassi told TheWrap. “Oliver Sacks lived such a … robust, incredible life and to have that as inspiration, and as a jumping off point has been so helpful … to build this really fascinating character at the center of our medical show.”
Pulling from access to two of Sack’s books — “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat” and “An Anthropologist on Mars” — Grassi drew from Sacks’ prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, to craft Oliver’s character. The cognitive disorder, which is revealed in the premiere episode,...

Francine Pascal, the author best known for creating hit teen book series “Sweet Valley High,” has died. She was 92.
Pascal died on Sunday in New York, the New York Times reports. The cause of death was lymphoma Pascal’s daughter, Laurie Wenk-Pascal, told the newspaper.
“Sweet Valley High” debuted in 1983 after a friend remarked to Pascal there was no teen version of 1980s soap “Dallas.” Pascal was reportedly inspired to create the series, about blonde Californian twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, immediately. The books went on to spawn hundreds of sequels and spin-offs detailing the twins at different ages, ranging from middle school to college. There were also some wackier books which saw the twins mixed up in murders and even supernatural events.
Only the first 12 books were written by Pascal although she wrote most of the outlines for the others. A TV adaptation of the books ran for four...

“CW Forever” and “CW Gold” are offered through Amazon’s free streaming platform, Freevee. (Graphic by The Desk)
Nexstar Media Group’s CW Network has launched its latest free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) channels through Amazon’s Fast platform, Freevee.
The channels — CW Gold and CW Forever — were quietly added to Freevee last week, The Desk can confirm. It marks the latest effort by the CW Network to build out its Fast business since broadcaster Nexstar acquired a majority stake in the network two years ago.
Distribution terms of the deal between the CW Network and Amazon were not available. The two channels were not initially offered through the CW Network’s own Fast platform — which recently became available through the CW app for Apple TV and iPhones — but the channels appeared on the web version of the CW Fast platform a few hours after this story was first published.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the Season 6 finale of The CW’s All American and the Season 3 premiere of All American: Homecoming.
There are some shakeups happening in the All American universe.
Season 6 of the flagship series ended Monday night with the departure of its star Daniel Ezra, who has led the show as Spencer James for six seasons. With Ezra gone, the show will be taking a new direction that returns to its high school roots, focusing on telling the stories of some newly introduced younger characters.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that the entire original cast is taking a backseat. As the show is making this transition, showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll recognizes “you don’t want to do a clean sweep.”
With Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) taking a coaching position at South Crenshaw and Laura gifting her house to he and Layla (Greta Onieogou), it’s...

Andrea Lewis is looking back on starring alongside Hilary Duff in the Disney Channel Original Movie Cadet Kelly and the film’s newfound resonance.
In the 2002 film, Duff portrays Kelly Collins, who is forced by her new stepfather to enroll in the George Washington Military School as a means of teaching her discipline. While she struggles to adjust to the new environment and has a rival in her commanding officer (Christy Carlson Romano), Duff’s Kelly befriends Carla (Lewis).
When reflecting on the role in the beloved Disney film, Lewis said she was “very excited” for the project.
“I loved Disney Channel, loved Even Stevens, loved Lizzie McGuire … I was a [The] Famous Jett Jackson fanatic. I loved the content,” she told People magazine. “So when the movie came in — and I guess this is me revealing something about myself — because I was an actor as a kid, I would more so look at the basics.

April began with showers, plus a tiny regional earthquake on the East Coast, but that didn’t keep anyone away from theaters, even if it was a slower weekend than much of March. Read on for the weekend box office report.
There was little surprise that Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” would win its second weekend at #1. Despite dropping 60% from its fantastic opening weekend, it still was able to take first place with an estimated $31.7 million to bring its total to $135 million after crossing the $100 million mark in its first week. It also passed the $361 million mark globally, with another $59.3 million grossed overseas this weekend.
The weekend offered two new wide releases in Dev Patel‘s directorial debut, the action-thriller “Monkey Man,” and 20th Century’s horror prequel “The First Omen,” the former released into 3,029 theaters vs. “The First Omen’s” 3,375 theaters. “Monkey Man” came into the...

In 2004, Degrassi: The Next Generation aired what would become their most controversial episode with “Accidents Will Happen,” which premiered in Canada in two parts on January 26 and February 9, 2004. However, the episode would not see the light of day on Degrassi’s U.S. network, The N, for another two years. This sparked outrage among Degrassi fans and confusion among the show’s stars, who couldn’t understand why, out of every sensitive topic Degrassi had touched upon, the storyline in “Accidents Will Happen” was too much for America to handle.

Gear up for a new season of Amazon’s breakout action hit Reacher, which is based on the popular novels by Lee Child that served as the basis for Tom Cruise’s attempted franchise, Jack Reacher. Although Cruise’s film adaptation was able to capitalize with the sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Prime Video’s Reacher series aimed to stick closer to the novels and presents a new case for each season. For example, major characters from season one, like Roscoe and Oscar Finlay, will not play prominent roles in this season. Prime Video has just released the teaser for tomorrow’s premiere for the trailer to season 2 of the Alan Ritchson-starring drama.

Drake, 36, has faced skepticism over the years for his friendship with “Stranger Things” actress Millie Bobby Brown, 19. On new track “Another Late Night,” Drake fires back at those who side-eye the rapper befriending a then-13-year-old Brown after first meeting in Australia back in 2017.
“My bank account is magnolia, Milly rockin’, ayy / Weirdos in my comments talkin’ ’bout some Millie Bobby, look / Bring them jokes up to the gang, we get to really flockin,'” Drake raps, transitioning from a reference to Playboy Carti’s track “Magnolia” into one about Brown. He brings a threatening tone to those who’d question their friendship, continuing, “Or send a finger to your mama in some FedEx boxes / Open up that s–t, it’s jaw droppin’, really shockin’, ayy.”
Drake and Brown’s friendship goes back years, including appearing together at a Golden Globes party in 2018. She was also one of a...

We’ve transitioned from a very 6 God summer to an Aubrey Graham autumn with Drake’s massive It’s All a Blur tour coming to an end (sort of) ahead of the release of his seventh studio album, For All the Dogs. The album was actually slated for last month, and while he’s said canceling shows would have helped him get closer to that deadline, he’d rather continue the concerts. His trek across North America, assisted by 21 Savage, began with 54 scheduled dates kinda wraps this weekend in his hometown of Toronto,...

Lea Thompson and Stacey Farber shined in the new mystery series, The Spencer Sisters. The series combined light-hearted crime drama with family angst well.
The Spencer Sisters Season 1 Episode 1 introduced both Darby and Victoria Spencer and hinted at why they had been estranged.
As an introductory chapter, the series did a decent job previewing the issues our leading ladies may have and what motivated them to go into the private investigation business together.
The Spencer Sisters was similar to many of Canada's other breezy procedurals, where private investigators solve crimes, typically bloodless ones, with plenty of humor sprinkled in. It reminded me of Private Eyes, which made sense since Alan McCullough created and produced both series.
The CW was fortunate to pick this series up since programming was lacking this fall during the strike. It fits right in with their programming, and both actresses have a massive fanbase.
There is much to discuss,...

Drake got very philosophical in an Instagram video posted Wednesday after being was asked what his biggest fear is.
“I’ve never really had a good answer for it, but my answer was that all this is for nothing. Kind of the idea that like, one day life ends and it just all goes black,” the rapper explained in the video. “And I guess that question like, sent me, you know, obviously deep into a spiral of thought. And it makes me think about my life and how surreal it feels at times.”
He proceeded to reflect on a life-changing audition he had for a TV show when he was “13 or 14.”

Multi-time Grammy winner Drake has been in a reflective mood as of late and has even been wondering whether his whole career is just one big weed-induced dream. While teen dramas talking about serious subject matters is more common these days than they used to be, back when Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001-2015) — just one of several series in the franchise — was on, that wasn’t the case. And when TV Insider recently spoke with Jake Epstein (who starred as Craig Manning across Seasons 2-8) about his latest Hallmark movie, The Wedding Contract, we had to have him look back at his time on the show. “At the time, you never know what kind of impact something you’re in is going to have. And when I was doing Degrassi, I mean, it felt really special and authentic. I loved the character that I was playing,” he shared. “It’s only really been in years after that I’ve really realized that a lot of those stories meant a lot to a lot of people who are maybe...

Updated: Netflix has renewed Ginny & Georgia, starring Brianne Howey and Antonia Gentry, for a third and fourth season. Sarah Glinski (Degrassi: The Next Generation) has been named showrunner for the upcoming seasons. She replaces Debra J. Fisher, who served as showrunner on the first two seasons.
Given Ginny & Georgia’s very strong performance and very appealing economics, the two-season order is not a surprise; Netflix has done it on other series with similar pedigree, including Virgin River.
What is surprising was the four-month wait for a series of that level of ratings success to be renewed. According to sources, the pickup was done awhile ago but held for Netflix’s upfront.
As for the showrunner change, there had been rumors about friction between Fisher and Ginny & Georgia creator Sarah Lampert. By April, there was speculation that Fisher would be departing the series.

Netflix is keeping Ginny & Georgia — one of its most popular series of 2023 to date — around for a while.
The streamer has picked up two more seasons of the mother-daughter dramedy starring Brianne Howey and Antonia Gentry. The renewal will take Ginny & Georgia through its fourth season. Along with the pickup, the series has also tapped a new showrunner in Sarah Glinski (Degrassi: The Next Generation). Glinski, who was hired before the Writers Guild of America began its strike, will take over for Debra J. Fisher, who ran the first two seasons.
The show’s second season, released Jan. 5, ended on a cliff-hanger. Fisher told The Hollywood Reporter that based on the ending, “season three is going to be a big roller coaster.” She also noted that when she and series creator Sarah Lampert pitched the show, they did so with four seasons in mind.

This article contains spoilers up to and including Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies Season 1 Episode 6.
If Niamh Wilson carries herself like a showbiz veteran, it's because she is. The Canadian wunderkind has been working in the entertainment industry since age five.

When I remark on the beauty of the vibrant work of art on the wall behind her, Wilson announces that she painted it herself. It's hardly surprising -- the 26-year-old acts, sings, dances, directs, and writes. Is there anything she can't do?
"I'm terrible at sports!" Wilson admits.
Unlike her character Lydia, Wilson wasn't a typical theatre kid in high school.

Exclusive: An attorney for Forbes March, the former star of such soaps as One Life to Live and All My Children who was arrested earlier this month in New York State for the alleged theft of used cooking oil, has responded to the charge in an exclusive statement to Deadline saying that March operates a legitimate oil collection service and that a “poorly marked and seemingly abandoned” container was mistaken for one of the containers legally serviced by March’s company.

Forbes March, a former soap actor who did stints on One Life to Live, All My Children and As the World Turns, was arrested in Hudson County, New York, earlier this month and charged with grand larceny for the alleged theft of used cooking oil from a diner.
The cooking oil has an estimated value of more than $1,000, according to the Ulster Police Department, and allegedly was siphoned by March and a second man, Oscar Guardado, from a storage container owned by a company called Buffalo Biodiesel. The tank was located behind Michael’s Diner, an Ulster restaurant.
The two men, who were released following their arrests, are expected to answer the charges of grand larceny in the fourth degree in the Town of Ulster Court at a later date.

Hollywood typically casts 20-something actors as teens, primarily due to labor laws. The Vampire Diaries was no different, with most of the cast members in their early to mid-20s when the teen drama began. By the time Tvd ended after eight seasons, its actors had aged. Ian Somerhalder was one of the oldest on the show, so how old was he while on The Vampire Diaries?

NBC is moving forward with a pilot order for the one-hour drama “Wolf,” hailing from “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin” executive producer Michael Grassi and Berlanti Productions. The project, from Warner Bros. Television, is inspired by the life and works of British neurologist Oliver Sacks.
Specifically, the series draws from Sacks’ books “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat” (1985) and “An Anthropologist on Mars” (1995). The logline is as follows: “Inspired by Oliver Sacks’ extraordinary life and work, ‘Wolf’ follows a revolutionary, larger-than-life neurologist and his team of interns as they explore the last great frontier, the human mind, while also grappling with their own relationships and mental health.”

There's a sibling duo hiding within the "Ginny & Georgia" cast. As many fans of the Netflix series have just discovered, the actors who play Joe and Padma - Raymond and Rebecca Ablack, respectively - are brother and sister in real life. Their characters only share one scene in the first season, but once Padma joins Ginny (Antonia Gentry) as an employee at Joe's Blue Farm Café in season two, their resemblance becomes more and more obvious by the episode.
Viewers learn way more about Joe and Padma individually as their characters develop in the show's latest installment. Joe forms a friendship-turned-romantic-fling with Cynthia (Sabrina Grdevich), who often visits Blue Farm to drink wine and escape thoughts of her sick husband. Despite the brief hookup, Joe's soft spot for Georgia (Brianne Howey) remains constant, and it seems the feeling was mutual at one point when he confronts...

Thanks to the success of the TV series "Euphoria", HBO Max has ordered a 10-episode resurrection of the Canadian high school teen drama "Degrassi", to be produced by Toronto's WildBrain Ltd., that will reportedly tackle 'woke' themes and attitudes, prepping to start shooting March 2023 in Toronto:
"...the popular series began in 1979 as 'The Kids of Degrassi Street', a run of CBC after-school specials that spun off into 'Degrassi Junior High' and 'Degrassi High' in the 1980's.
" In 2001, 'Degrassi: The Next Generation' sparked a renaissance for the franchise that lasted for 14 seasons, ending its run on MTV. Degrassi: Next Class" was the latest revamp in 2016 and aired two seasons on Netflix..."

Canadian singer-songwriter Fefe Dobson and Inigo Pascual are set to star in Danzig (working title), an indie film drama inspired by a real-life 2012 gang shooting in inner-city Toronto.
The film sees director Ron Dias and screenwriter Joanne Jansen combine to portray two people whose worlds collide on Danzig Street in Scarborough. Pascual will play the role of Joshua Yasay, based on a real person who was caught up in the deadly shooting incident, while Dobson will perform the fictional role of his love interest.
No word on additional casting. Danzig will take place amid a turf war between rival gangs in Scarborough, where the characters of Nipsey and his brother Breeze do whatever it takes to keep other gangs out of their neighborhood.
Nipsey’s longtime girlfriend, Shanice, kicks him out of their home for cheating and afterwards finds a blood-marked gun in her car,...

Amber Riley is among the participants in “The Black Beauty Effect”, a new three-part documentary series airing in the U.S. on Xfinity, created by former “Degrassi: The Next Generation” star Andrew Lewis, exploring the recent evolution in the beauty industry with respect to Black women.
In addition to “Glee” alum Riley, “The Black Beauty Effect also features beauty industry moguls such as Jackie Aina, Cj Faison and Kahlana Barfield Brown.

John Oliver got bold on the season finale of Last Week Tonight when he called out his employer, Warner Bros. Discovery, once again.
On a night when Oliver talked about all the controversies surrounding the World Cup being hosted in Qatar, the late-night host dinged the parent company of HBO and HBO Max.
Oliver exposed the injustices workers suffered while working in Qatar creating the infrastructure to host the soccer tournament. One particular worker said he was hopeful that the star athletes “would shine the light on all the exploitation that went into this event,” Oliver said.
The worker said that he had “hope” his idol like Messi would bring light to the injustices but Oliver pointed out that Lionel Messi’s current team is sponsored by Qatar Airways, “a team literally owned by the state investment fund of Qatar.”
“People don’t generally openly sh** on their employers unless,...

Nearly 10 months after HBO Max ordered a new series of “Degrassi”, the popular Canadian teen franchise, and also picked up the streaming rights for all 14 seasons of “Degrassi: The Next Generation”, Et has confirmed that reboot is no longer moving forward.
Originally eyed for a 2023 debut, the new “Degrassi” series was going to consist of 10 hour-long episodes and be run by showrunners Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen, with filming set to begin over the summer in Toronto.
The entire library of “Next Generation” episodes, meanwhile, is still available to stream on HBO Max, after first joining the platform this spring.
“Degrassi” is about the high school experience and the roller-coaster journey of self-discovery. Set in Toronto, the updated series explores a group of teenagers and school faculty living in the shadow of events that both bind them together and tear them apart. The show travels deep into the hearts and homes of diverse,...

School is out at HBO Max: The streamer has scuttled its planned revival of Degrassi.
Like a number of other projects, the Degrassi revival is a casualty of post-merger cutbacks at Warner Bros. Discovery. The show scored a series order in January 2022, a few months before the merger between Discovery and WarnerMedia became final.
WildBrain, which owns the Degrassi franchise, was set to produce the new series, which, like its predecessors, would have followed students and teachers at the titular school who are “living in the shadow of events that both bind them together and tear them apart,” per the show’s logline. Lara Azzopardi (The Bold Type) and Julia Cohen (Riverdale, A Million Little Things) were tapped as showrunners. (Cohen is also the showrunner of ABC’s midseason drama The Company You Keep.)
