This was originaly written for Tony Doyle, but he died before filming. His part was given to Doyle's Ballykissangel co-star Lorcan Cranitch.
As Tony Doyle died just days before filming was due to begin, no rewrites were made after the title role was recast, despite replacement Lorcan Cranitch being 24 years younger than Doyle. Poor chemistry between Cranitch and Patsy Palmer, playing father and daughter despite an age gap of just 13 years, was highlighted by critics as a reason for the show's cancellation after just one series.
