Surf Crazy (1959)

Quotes

Surf Crazy

Edit
  • Narrator: Uno. Dos. Malo.
  • Narrator: Dick gave up board surfing for body surf.
  • Narrator: This is a reverse enchilada, sit-down, pullout. At least, that's what they call it.
  • Narrator: A pretty girl catches their eye. Surfers' minds usually remain on the waves. When an attractive girl wanders by and gets friendly, they get friendly back.
  • Narrator: The Aztec two-step struck again!
  • Narrator: Some consolation with the small waves was the good shape of these small waves plus the water temperature, which now was about 80 degrees. The 80 degree water still seemed a little - chilly because the air temperature today was about 95. A really tough day.
  • Narrator: Arriving in Mexico City you get quite a surprise to the drivers there. It seems that everybody was training for the Mexican road race. There's only one speed in Mexico City - that was as fast as you could go.
  • Narrator: The surfers waited for dark to go back out again so the sharks couldn't see them.
  • Narrator: Four surfers taking off in slow motion. Sunset Beach with the waves breaking to a half mile offshore. Three surfers. Two. One. Opps!
  • Narrator: Now we take a visit to our 50th state. See what they're doing over there. The weird pastime for the women in Hawaii is the hula dance. Women of all ages do the hula in Hawaii - even the young ones. They learn very young in Hawaii how to really - swing it.
  • Narrator: Skin diving. Which is how a lot of the California surfers earn money in Hawaii. Once they have some money, they load in a plane, United States Overseas Airlines, and head for Hawaii. The food wasn't the greatest, but the stewardesses were cute. If the food was too bad, they provided a sack.
  • Narrator: Once in Hawaii, the first thing a surfer does is pick up a car from one of the local car dealers. Start - taking the back seats out and sawing out the braces so it'll carry surf boards.
  • Narrator: There's a dance they imported from Tahiti. It's called the Tahitian dance - and this one they really rotate.
  • Narrator: Sunset Beach has only been ridden in the past three or four years since the California surfers who began migrating to Hawaii with their light weight surfboards.
  • Narrator: Surfers get as much of a kick out of riding a place like this that very seldom breaks, as they do riding one of the longer established spots. They talk about their few rides and wipeouts for a solid hour until the sun dropped down behind Ka'ena point.
  • Narrator: Now, we go back to Waimea Bay for what I call the Big Five. These are the five biggest waves of the year. It's waves like this that break when Waimea Bay is almost closing out, almost too big to ride; almost, but not quite. These giant waves come grinding down from the middle of the bay. When they break they rattle windows two miles inland. You feel the earth tremble under your feet on the beach.
  • Narrator: For surfers in Hawaii, Christmas dinner isn't usually turkey. It's something like macaroni and hamburger. Believe me, that was a treat.
  • Narrator: Then came the worst wipeout of the year! A freefall the whole way down the wave.
