The events of this game are no longer considered part of the Street Fighter canon after the release of the game's remake Street Fighter Alpha 2 (1996).
Akuma does not wear sandals in this game series, even though he wears them before and after (ie in Street Fighter's non-spinoffs/crossovers). This could be because the game is set chronologically before both of these.

The British martial arts web-series, TV series, and feature film titled Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist (2014) has been developed by Joey Ansah and Christian Howard. It was based on this game, the story focuses on Ryu and Ken as they uncover the past of their sensei, Gouken and learn the secrets of their Dark Art, Ansatsuken as well as the Satsui no Hadou.
The story is a prequel and sub-sequel at the same time, taking place six months after the events of Street Fighter (1987) and also six years before the events of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (1991).
