Dev Patel starrer uses Lata Mangeshkar’s voice to accentuate the maternal mood
Dev Patel at an event for Chappie (2015)
A very large part of the new Oscar-nominated Dev Patel film Lion is based in India, and for this section some of the narrative, music from the 1980s has been used to accentuate the era. A very unusual choice is a rare Lata Mangeshkar song ‘Aaja Nindiya Aaja’ from a 1984 film Lorie featuring Shabana Azmi and the late Farouq Sheikh. A haunting lullaby composed by the veteran Khayyam, itRead More

Mike Tyson Went to Algeria to Make the Country's "First Martial Arts Film"... Here's a First Look at the Results
According to Algerian newspaper l’Expressionz.com (I love that I can access any newspaper from almost anywhere in the world, on the web, even though they aren't always in a language I understand), comes what is being called the first Algerian martial arts film, from French director Jean-Marc Mineo, titled "Gates of the Sun." It stars Algerian actors Ahmed Benaissa, Mourad Khan, French actress Loris Pester, as well as French singer Lorie, and Algerian comedian Smaïn. Mike Tyson also co-stars, playing what looks like a hired goon. Previously titled "Algeria Forever," the film centers on a plot...

Revolver Rani Music Review
On August 25th we will see Kangana Ranaut in Sai Kabir’s Revolver Rani. According to the synopsis, Revolver Rani is a satirical and odd love story set against the backdrop of politics. It’s about Alka Singh (aka Revolver Rani), the leader of a political party, and her obsessive love for Rohan Mehra (played by Vir Das), a rising star of Bollywood. Sanjeev Srivastava was brought in to create the musical world of Revolver Rani and with the songs to make the story come alive. So how did he fare? Read on to find out!

The beginning sounds of the title track Revolver Rani was not promising because I kept checking to see if my computer was somehow skipping…sadly no, it is just the song. It gets better when the track transforms to an Usha Uthup jazz showcase and she is brilliant – of course. There are a couple...

30 Years Ago: MTV Went On The Air, 13 Daytime Soaps Aired
MTV went on the air 30 years ago today at 12:01 a.m. It was a Saturday morning and the previous week, 13 daytime soaps had aired on ABC, CBS and NBC. That's more than double the six we have today. Here's a look at what happened that week on the soaps:

The Doctors: Greta miscarried. Billy (Alec Baldwin) joined forces with Nola (Kim Zimmer) against Mona. Althea's mystery patient called out Althea's name. Natalie played Jack against Jerry for her affections. Matt fumed when Maggie won a research grant. Mona ordered her lawyer, Edmund, to go over Jason's will. Barney planned to trace his family's roots in Ireland.

All My Children: Brandon finally asked Sara for a divorce, but Sara dampened Erica's parade by vowing a long fight. Wally refused Devon in bed. Jesse returned with Carl and agreed to attend summer school. Sybil failed to win Rick's attention away from Betsy.

'Dancing With the Stars': Hidden Gems of Week 8!
Maksim Chmerkovskiy at an event for The 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (2009)
Gems: Not just the name of a Michael Bolton album! Studies have shown that Hidden Gems of the Week, EW.com’s collection of reader-submitted ridiculata, is the best way to enjoy Dancing With the Stars without ever having to turn it on. It’s a visual feast of sparkles, fringe, and Maks’ ass. Double dose of jewels this week — next week, I’ll be on a trip to outer space (Planet Mirrorballus itself) and might not get to spend five hours heavily petting my screengrabber.

Sure, they may not all be *hidden,* but as EW.com’s Senior Supervising Appraiser,...

Here are the 2010 New York Reader's Choice results for categories dealing with classes and coaches. To look at all of the categories, be sure to visit the main page. Favorite Vocal/Singing Coach: Jackie Presti "Singing is a big coordination act, and I think a lot of people come in focusing on one aspect," says voice therapist and teacher Jackie Presti. "It's sort of like juggling and riding a bike and reciting Shakespeare at the same time."Clearly, Presti, who's also a singer, musician, and conductor, hits the right notes with her students. Her knowledge of both technical and artistic matters, not to mention her versatility and flexibility as a teacher, appealed to Valerie Ryan Miller, who has studied with her for three years. "After developing a strong belt, and a lot of vocal tension," Miller says, "I came to Jackie, who has expanded my range enormously—we are talking octaves!
