Featured review
For being the first (and only) film directed by someone who was not a director and had no formal secondary education, it is surprisingly decent and better than many films being produced today. Even though the script and tone of the film might be somewhat ludicrous, or camp, as many star vehicle films featuring pop music celebrities, the film is daring in its attempt to do something different and showcase the singer's (who also directed the film) inventiveness and eye for aesthetics. Judging by the use of shots and editing techniques, Sandro and his team certainly did their homework and seem to have carefully studied the careers and oeuvres of prominent directors. There is probably an influence from New American Cinema there too. Another interesting addition is the large number of choreographies featured in the film (preceding "Grease" from 1978) and the idea of embedded narrative or "mise en abyme". Moreover, this film seems to have inspired the music video of "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel, which came out several years later, and its copyright holders even won a plagiarism lawsuit over it. With that being said, the music in the film is not among Sandro's strongest output, much like most of the forgettable soundtracks of Elvis films in the 1960s.
