This series marks the first time that the character of Unicron received a toy, and it soon became one of the most famous and popular figures in the entirety of the Transformers franchise. Unicron first appeared in The Transformers: The Movie (1986), and although Hasbro originally wanted to make a toy out of him, the designs fell through. He remained toyless until the release of this series, 16 years later.

This series is well known for having a Starscream who is a noble warrior; not a traitorous, power hungry backstabber. Making him an anomaly in the Transformers multiverse; all the other Starscreams are evil and selfish.
According to the statistics of toy manufacturer Hasbro, the Transformers toy line which was concurrently released with this cartoon was one of the best top-sellers they ever had. This gave the franchise an immense boost, which continues to last to this day.
Hot Shot's toy was originally envisioned as having the body shape of a brutish football-player. However the toy suffered from engineering issues and designed Aaron Archer felt it didn't suit the character type they were going for with Hot Shot, so they hastily redesigned him. Hot Shot in this show appears in his updated design.
