With the latest genre of comedies coming out of Hongkong, this one could be developed better. The scenes featuring Sam Lee and Anthony Wong fooling around was shockingly shallow and awkward. The fight scenes were dismal. I have grown to like Sam Lee in the other movies in supporting roles. I look forward to seeing him as the main star of another movie given a better story line. The story was lacking in originality. Although it draws ideas from other 'policeman-pretends-to-be-student' plots by Steven Chow, Nicholas Tse & others, this is more love story than the others. I guess you get very good close-ups of lovely Gillian Chung. A lovely face does not equal a good movie tho'.
2002 is the year of fantastic Anthony Wong performances, with one notable exception -- this movie. U-MAN stars Wong and Sam Lee as undercover cops who have to infiltrate a catholic girls school to find some stolen money. Wong disguises as a priest, Lee as a schoolgirl with a back-brace and braces. Lee finds the school lesbian developing strong attraction to him, while Wong falls for the girls' karate instructor (Rachel Fu). Eventually they suspect Gillian Cheung (of the band TWINS), who is the daughter of a triad baddie (Lam Suet). It's all in good natured fun. Sam Lee is hilarious and Anthony Wong just exceedingly strange. Hong Kong movies have never been politically correct, but the 9/11 references still came as something as a jolt so soon after the event. It's one of those movies that has nothing to say and nothing to do, and just hangs out with you for ninety minutes. By the end, it has worn out its welcome, eaten all the Cheeze-Its in the house, and left you to clean up the place.
this movie was moderately funny, if you are anything but a sam lee fan, you should stay away from this. he plays a cop trying to investigate the daughter of a gangster at an all girls school, where he must dress up as a woman... anthony wong goes undercover as a priest.
one of the more funnier scenes involves sam lee dressing up as osama bin laden and the hi-jinks that ensue...
5/10
