The film was originally titled " Rishta" but the rights to the title were with " ABCL", Amitabh Bachchan's company. Inder Kumar was to make a film by that name with Amitabh Bachchan. Since he could not get the rights, he named it Rishtey.
Anil Kapoor suggested to Indra Kumar Preity Zinta be approached for the second lead role. She rejected it and it went to Shilpa Shetty.
Karisma earlier worked with Anil in Andaz in which she had a secondary role, this is the first time they acted together as a lead.
Final film to feature Anil Kapoor and Amrish Puri together.
