Mehmood originally wanted to make this film with Amitabh Bachchan after Bombay To Goa. He dropped all plans as Amitabh would not give him dates.
The film was in the news for Mehmood slapping Rajesh Khanna. Rajesh Khanna was always report late to the movie sets causing delays. Mehmood was losing money due to this.One day Mehmood had enough and slapped him. He told Khanna he was a super star at his own home. On the sets of Janta Hawaldar he was a paid actor.
The film was originally planned in 1976 with producer Ashok Shinde under the banner Shinde Enterprises. The title was "Dagdu Hawaldar" and Mehmood was playing the lead role. Amjad Khan and Mukri were part of the star cast. The film was restarted as Janta Hawaldar with a new producer.
Yogita Bali had high hopes after the film she would become a bigger star . The film flopped and she decided to slowly cut down her work to settle down.
