Without a Paddle

21 Years Later, Matthew Lillard’s $19 Million Sleeper Hit Finds Streaming Success in America
Image
Matthew Lillard has established himself as one of the premier Scream Kings in Hollywood, but 21 years ago, he teamed up with a star from The Boys for a slapstick comedy that’s returned to streaming charts. Lillard stars alongside Antony Starr and Seth Green in Without a Paddle, the mystery/adventure film following three men who go camping in search of the lost D.B. Cooper money after one of their friends dies. Without a Paddle is currently streaming on Paramount+, and the film has returned to the streamer’s top 10, sitting at #8 at the time of writing. Without a Paddle was maligned by critics who reviewed it at a 15% clip on Rotten Tomatoes, but fans were kinder to the film, giving it a 68% score on the aggregate site. It grossed $73 million at the box office against a $19 million budget.

It took a team consisting of Fred Wolf, Harris Goldberg, Tom Nursall,...

What’s Leaving Netflix in March 2025
Image
Pictures via Netflix, Warner Bros. Pictures, Sony Pictures and Hulu

2025 is in full swing, and with March just around the corner, it’s time for you to look ahead at the movies and series scheduled to depart Netflix throughout the month of March. The biggest notable TV series leaving is The Mindy Project, while hit films like Scooby-Doo and Love Again, among others, are also set to depart.

As always, Netflix’s library is constantly evolving. That means new titles are always on the way, but because Netflix licenses titles from big distributors, they’re not always on Netflix forever. When this license (or rental period) comes to an end, the movie or series leaves Netflix.

Note: This list will be constantly updated throughout February as we learn of more series and movies set to leave (typically 30 days before their departure). In the last few weeks of the month, Netflix...

Long Before Playing Homelander, This ‘The Boys’ Star Auditioned for James Bond — Here’s How To Watch the Tape
Image
Antony Starr first made a name for himself around 20 years ago in projects like Without a Paddle (Seth Green) and Outrageous Fortune (Robyn Malcolm), but in 2025 he’s best known for his role as Homelander in The Boys, the raunchy hit Prime Video superhero series. However, around the same time as he was starring in smaller projects, he also auditioned for an iconic character that ultimately went to Daniel Craig. That’s right, Homelander himself once screen tested for the role of James Bond, and now fans can watch his audition for free on YouTube. Ron South posted the nearly five-minute clip on his channel, and he says he found the tape in the recycling bin of a movie studio, along with another audition tape for Henry Cavill.

Why This Actor Thought DWTS Would Ruin His Chances At An Oscar
Image
Dancing With the Stars has opened the door for new opportunities for some celebrities who have competed on the show. In Season 33, The Bachelor's Joey Graziadei and his fiance Kelsey Anderson went from reality TV stars to popular influencers. Model Brooks Nader and Gleb Savchenko's showmance made constant headlines. Even former mirrorball trophy winner and 90s actor, Alfonso Ribeiro, found himself with a brand-new career as the show's co-host.

However, not every celebrity who gets approached to be on DWTS finds it a great opportunity for their career. A certain Hollywood actor turned down the chance to be a contestant for fears that he wouldn't be able to land any more serious acting roles. For this actor, the thought of competing on the beloved reality TV show would just do the opposite for his career.

Antony Starr: Net Worth, Age, Height & Everything You Need To Know About The Boys Actor
Image
Antony Starr gained fame as Homelander but had significant roles in New Zealand TV before The Boys. His net worth is $2 million, likely earned from years of acting and playing Homelander on The Boys. Starr almost didn't audition for the role of Homelander, but ended up being an excellent fit for the memorable character.

Antony Starr may be best known for one specific role, but the actor has had other notable performances in his career that have totaled up to a tidy net worth. Starr's first notable acting role came in 1995, when he played Mesas in an episode of Xena: Warrior Princess, and a year later, he again appeared on the show as a different character named David. His first significant part came in the New Zealand series Mercy Peak as Todd Van der Velter from 2001 to 2003, and larger roles, primarily in his native New Zealand, became more frequent.

Matthew Lillard can finally talk about his Five Nights at Freddy’s comeback
Image
With the actor’s strike finally over, Matthew Lillard can finally talk about the plum role he has in Five Nights at Freddy’s. In a recent THR interview, Lillard mentioned being thrilled about how fans have reacted to the film, noting:

“Being 53 years old — and being around the block a couple times — I have a much deeper sense of appreciation in this moment than I probably have ever had because I didn’t expect it. I realize that these opportunities don’t come around that often. It’s been a really rich, joyful moment because I can sort of sit back and appreciate it on a deeper level.”

Lillard’s character, who has a rich mythology in the game, could well wind-up being a recurring presence in the Five Nights at Freddy’s world, especially with the film such a huge hit in theaters and on Peacock. But, it turns...

‘Cobweb’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Woody Norman, Lizzy Caplan, Antony Starr, Cleopatra Coleman | Written by Chris Thomas Devlin | Directed by Samuel Bodin

Cobweb begins a week before Halloween when Peter is woken up by the sound of knocking seemingly coming from inside his bedroom wall. You can’t blame him for being creeped out, with its peeling paint and backyard full of rotting pumpkins the house already looks like something out of a horror movie. And then there’s that weird bulging thing the walls in his room do while he’s sleeping.

We also quickly learn that he has no friends and gets bullied at school. His parents Carol and Mark also won’t let him dress up for Halloween, something that may be related to the disappearance of a young girl a few years ago. Unsurprisingly they also don’t believe him about the knocking.

Image
This post contains spoilers for "Five Nights at Freddy's."

Matthew Lillard is a horror legend and we don't say it enough. We know him and we love him from films like "She's All That," "Slc Punk," "Without a Paddle" ... any "Love's Labour's Lost" fans out there? But the man got his start in horror and his irrepressible comic spirit and fearless willingness to switch to pitch-black menace on a dime have made him an extremely effective and underrated horror star, as you can see in films like "Scream," "Scooby Doo," and "Thirteen Ghosts."

Lillard has just added another glinting badge to his vest in the form of "Five Nights at Freddy's." We meet him as Steve Raglan, the career counselor that our hero, Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson), is sent to after he beats up a dad in front of his son while on the job. La Claqueta Goes ‘Hunting’ With Alberto Marini (Exclusive)
Image
Prolific Andalusian production company La Claqueta has tapped award-winning screenwriter-producer Alberto Marini to direct rural thriller “Últimos días de caza” (“Last Days of Hunting.”)

Penned by José Cabeza, co-scribe on 2016’s “7 Years,” Netflix first Spanish original movie, “Last Days of Hunting” has a completed screenplay and has initiated financing.

The aim is to close the financing phase during this year and begin shooting second quarter 2024, probably in northern Spain.

“Last Days of Hunting” leads a growth-period for Seville-based La Claqueta, which is raising the ante in terms of film production ambitions.

“This is a noir that revolves around torpid masculinity; it is the story of volcanoes that don’t know how to release lava when they should and that explode inwards,” said Marini, who debuted as a helmer with 2015 horror feature “Summer Camp.”

“The story takes place in a very localized universe and is grounded in the territory but...

Netflix Takes a Hit, but Theaters Might Want to Go Easy on the Cheers
Image
The timing could not be more exquisite. Just as exhibitors and studios prepare to gather for their first full-throated, in-person CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas that begins April 25, bête noire Netflix revealed the streaming service lost 200,000 customers in Q1 2022 and will lose another 2 million in Q2.

For the National Association of Theater Owners, this is a long, dark drink of schadenfreude with a caffeine boost. Netflix, to a near-absurd degree, symbolized a nuclear threat to box office. However, this proves that while Netflix is a disruptor, it operates under the same laws of gravity that govern every other business.

However, to put this in perspective: It’s a dire prospect, losing more than 2 million users in six months — but that would represent one percent of the Netflix user base. For theaters, domestic gross for first quarter 2022 was 1.33 billion; the same period in 2019 grossed 2.44 billion. That’s a 45 percent drop and...

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Breaks Record With 4th Week at #1 on PVOD Charts
Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Thomas Haden Church, Jamie Foxx, Rhys Ifans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zendaya, and Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/19.99) retains its spot as #1 on all three VOD charts for a fourth week, a record since IndieWire started tracking home viewing. Next week, the film could extend its streak — but expect that to be the end with the impending debut of Warner Bros.’ “The Batman.”

Sources with knowledge of Warners’ plans indicate “The Batman” will be made available on PVOD April 18 — the same day it starts streaming on HBO Max. Even a blockbuster of this size will feed the studio’s streamer after 45 days.

“The Batman” was the first Warners release since the end of the studio’s “Project Popcorn,” which gave 2021 theatrical releases day-and-date play on HBO Max. In that period, the studio usually delayed PVOD for at least 60 days after initial release, and it began after the initial streaming period ended. This will be the first opportunity to gauge its new home-release strategies.

Chauncey Leopardi and Patrick Renna in The Big Green (1995)

D.B. Cooper in Pop Culture: 15 Best Movie and TV Moments
Seth Green
On November 24, 1971, a man calling himself Dan Cooper hijacked Northwest Orient Airlines flight 305 from Portland to Seattle (a trip known as a “milk run” due to the short distance involved). A few minutes into the voyage, he got the attention of a flight attendant and made it known that he had a bomb that he intended to use unless his demands were met. What did he want? $200,000 in unmarked bills and four parachutes.

After the plane was on the ground in Seattle, the passengers were let go, the plane was refueled, and Cooper was granted his money and chutes. He instructed the pilot to head towards Mexico City, making it clear that the wing flaps were to remain at 15 degrees and landing gear to stay deployed, the cabin remain depressurized, and that the craft was not to exceed an altitude of 10,000 feet.

Some time after the trip to Mexico City began,...

The photos show us a mustached Adam Sandler in a poor excuse for a ghost costume, as well as Maya Rudolph decked out as the Bride of Frankenstein alongside a headless Tim Meadows. We also get a glimpse at a cop played by Kevin James who is far more focused on his candy bar than his job.

Welcome to this week’s Monday Night Raw review, right here in Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and this is the big go-home show before SummerSlam, which means it’s gonna suck! You know there ain’t a damn thing on here worth talking about. I’m just gonna make shit up. Kamala…Rest In Peace. John Cena…suck a big phucken dick. Monday Night Raw…has Shawn Michaels tonight…who can also suck a big, phucken dick. Here comes SummerSlam!

Match #1: Apollo Crews def. Shelton Benjamin The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

While Mvp accused Apollo Crews of orchestrating Retribution’s attacks, Crews instead looked forward to SummerSlam, setting up a match with Shelton Benjamin...

Bonkers Nsfw Final Trailer for Amazon's The Boys Before Its Friday Premiere
This new Amazon series The Boys has intrigued me more and more with everything I see from it. It looks really different and dark and gritty, and I am stoked for it. This new trailer give us more footage along with more interesting insight on the story.

The series stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr (Without a Paddle), Erin Moriarty (The Kings of Summer), Jessie T. Usher (Independence Day), Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), Tomer Capon (Fullmoon), Karen Fukuhara (Suicide Squad), Dominique McElligott, Nathan Mitchell (iZombie), and Elisabeth Shue.

The series follows a group of vigilantes who join forces to take down superheroes that are abusing their super powers. The series is already getting crazy hype, as we learned yesterday that the show already got picked up for a second season! The first season hasn’t even premiered yet! But it sure does look incredibly cool.

Rosenbaum

Ben McGrath (Chris Klein) had major league potential playing professional baseball, but his hopes to play ball literally get crushed. Down on his luck, Ben gets another swing at redemption as a new attorney for Schmood & Associates. His unorthodox boss, Mel (Jon Lovitz), convinces him to manage their eclectic softball team full of misfits and strikeouts. Together, will they have enough spirit to rally and win it all?

Ok, so The Benchwarmers didn’t set the world on fire but I did enjoy the ridiculous underdog film for what it was – a stupid, laugh out loud comedy product from the “Happy Gilmore” factory of filmmaking. In the grand...

7 Films New to Netflix to Watch In October 2016, Including ‘Unforgiven’ and ‘Dazed and Confused’
October 1 (2014)
Next month, Netflix offers up a big selection of films of all stripes — modern to classic, animated to live action, Best Picture winners to teen phenomenons — and we’ve picked seven that you should watch as soon as humanly possible, either for the first time or as part of a nostalgic little binge. Enjoy.

1. “Unforgiven” (available October 1)

The winner of four Oscars, including Best Picture, Clint Eastwood’s 1992 film “Unforgiven” is the last Western he directed and starred in, and he made it count. About an aging outlaw tasked with one final job, the film examines the myths of the West and how they’re perverted and distorted over time, as well as the contradictions within established national archetypes. It’s arguably Eastwood’s defining masterpiece, and one of the very best films of the 90s. See it immediately.

2. “Dazed and Confused” (available October 1)

The 1993 cult classic “Dazed and Confused...

Chevy Chase, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Schuyler Fisk, J. Adam Brown, Chris Elliott, Zena Grey, and Mark Webber in Snow Day (2000)
New Netflix Movie and TV Titles for October
Chevy Chase, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Schuyler Fisk, J. Adam Brown, Chris Elliott, Zena Grey, and Mark Webber in Snow Day (2000)
In a blink of an eye it’ll be October. The air will turn crisp, the leaves will turn beautiful shades of orange, and you’ll get to crack out your favorite sweatshirt (unless you live in Los Angeles like me, in which case it’ll be 90 and you’ll sweat involuntarily). But rather than playing outside, what you really want to do is watch Netflix. October presents a whole new list of viewing opportunities with classics like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Patton. If you choose to skip a day of work, what could be better than Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or Snow Day? And then there are no shortage of Netflix originals that are being added. The ones I’m looking most forward to are Mascots from Christopher Guest (Spinal Tap, Best in Show) and the third season of the under-appreciated Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show. For...

Dax Shepard: Jason Bateman Convinced Me to Marry Kristen Bell!
He’s a lucky guy with a gorgeous wife, and Dax Shepard credits his buddy Jason Bateman with giving him the extra push he needed to settle down with Kristen Bell.

During an interview with People, the “Without a Paddle” hunk explained, “Jason was the first to go, ‘Stop f*cking around and marry Kristen,’” adding that the “Arrested Development” stud also encouraged procreation.

Motioning to Bateman, Dax continued, “You immediately transitioned into 'Get her pregnant.’ I would say you were at the very forefront of cracking the whip on that. And you were dead right." Shepard and Bell currently have a two-year-old daughter named Lincoln and an 11-week-old daughter named Delta.

8 Great D.B. Cooper Pop Culture Moments
Chris Cummins Nov 24, 2019

D.B. Cooper leapt into history one Thanksgiving weekend in 1971. Here's a look at the mysterious skyjacker's pop culture impact.

“You hijack the flight and disappear into the night. Captain’s voice sounds tight: “be calm and it’ll be all right.” The passengers all eyes, a growing fear inside them. Vapor trails and light, all we see tonight but it’s all right.”– Everything is Fine, “Vapor Trails and Light”

After the plane...

A Ten-Year Anniversary (2004-2014): Top 10 Cinematic Duds from Yesterday
Has it actually been ten years already since we have been engaged in the realm of films dating back to 2004? A decade is certainly a long period of time to build our appreciation for cinema up until this critical point in 2014. In looking back at 2004, one can recall fondly some of the more desirable releases to come out at that time. For instance, the superb Million Dollar Baby was the Academy Award-winning film for 2004. Even the comedies that were released that year gave movie audiences cause to rejoice with such ditties as the sleeper indie hit Napoleon Dynamite and well as mainstream laughers in Mean Girls and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy.

Unfortunately for every gem there is a dud and then some. And 2004 had its share to say the least. So how about getting nostalgic and recalling some of the notable misses that were heaped on misled moviegoers...

Elizabeth Banks Is Desperate in Our Exclusive Red Band 'Walk of Shame' Preview (Video)
Elizabeth Banks just wanted to borrow someone's phone, okay?

In this exclusive (and very R-rated) clip for "Walk of Shame," Elizabeth Banks's character, Meghan, is lost and trying to make a phone call after a particularly eventful evening. See also: the title of the movie. In modern parlance, the walk of shame is what one does after having intimate relations with another person that they've just met. A walk of shame is usually done in one's clothes and/or makeup from the night before, unless it's Halloween, in which case the walk of shame is done in one's Halloween costume.

Unfortunately for Meghan, her walk of shame is much more complicated. The recognizable TV reporter has to navigate Los Angeles without cash, a car, her phone, or even her ID. And she has to do it in time to make a really important job interview for a network news anchor gig!

Elizabeth Banks Causes Trouble in 'Walk of Shame' Red Band Trailer
Following a somewhat underwhelming trailer earlier this year for the comedy Walk of Shame starring Elizabeth Banks, a second red band trailer offers a slightly better look at the comedy. While the terrible audio editing in the first half of the trailer is thoroughly distracting, Banks shines as she runs around Los Angeles, trying to get her car back in order to make it to the most important job interview of her career as a news anchorwoman. Meanwhile, her one-night-stand James Marsden and friends Gillian Jacobs and Sarah Wright are in hot pursuit, trying to end her long night from hell with a happy ending. Watch below! Here's the new red band trailer for Steven Brill's Walk of Shame, originally from Us Magazine: Walk of Shame is written and directed by Steven Brill (Mr. Deeds, Drillbit Taylor, Without a Paddle). Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games franchise, Pitch Perfect) stars...

Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard Take Their Fight to the Paparazzi
They’ve always been critical of the celebrity photography industry, and Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard went toe-to-toe with two representatives from the paparazzi realm.

During a debate on “Access Hollywood,” the “Veronica Mars” starlet and her “Without a Paddle” husband faced off against Steve Ginsburg and Christian Zimmerman from Akm/Gsi and things got pretty heated.

Bell described a common scenario during which she gets surrounded by 10 photographers at night at Lax while carrying her daughter Lincoln, calling it “terrifying.”

Shepard chimed in, “If you don’t have an ethical issue with that, then I don’t think you have ethics.”

From the other side, Zimmerman called Kristen’s term “pedorazzi” (photographers who snap shots of celebrity kids without authorization) “hysterical.”

And Ginsburg tried to be fair to both sides, noting “Photographers need to be regulated,” though he wasn’t clear on how those rules would be determined and enforced.

Elizabeth Banks Takes An Epic Walk Of Shame In New Trailer
Every adventurous college student is familiar with the walk of shame, to the point where stumbling back to one’s dorm in disheveled clothing after a night on the town is considered a rite of passage by many. However, most one night stands don’t result in as much trouble as Elizabeth Banks’s does, in the appropriately titled Walk of Shame.

The first trailer for the film, which you can check out below, was released today and it gives us a peek at her truly disastrous morning after:

Banks plays aspiring reporter Meghan Miles (Banks), who encounters many obstacles as she attempts to make the trek from the home of a random hook-up (James Marsden) through downtown L.A. to get to the most important job interview of her career.

It’s nice to see Banks taking on a leading role for the first time in what feels like a long while.

Watch: Elizabeth Banks Has Hellish One Night Stand in 'Walk of Shame'
While Elizabeth Banks has mostly been relegated to meaty supporting roles in films like People Like Us, The Hunger Games, The Next Three Days and Role Models, this time she's taking the lead on the comedy Walk of Shame. It's a classic race against time as Banks plays a local news reporter who has the sudden opportunity to become a network news anchor. The only problem is after her car is towed following a one night stand (with James Marsden), she has no phone, ID or money, and finds herself stranded and desperate to make it to the interview. This trailer reminds me of that movie Trojan War from 1997 with "Boy Meets World" star Will Friedle looking everywhere for a condom. And that's not a compliment. Watch! Here's the first trailer for Steven Brill's Walk of Shame, originally from Yahoo: Walk of Shame is written and directed by Steven Brill (Mr. Deeds,...

Dax Shepard Reveals Low-Budget Wedding with Kristen Bell on “Jimmy Kimmel Live”
He’s a man madly in love, and Dax Shepard couldn’t shut up about his beautiful wife Kristen Bell while chatting with Jimmy Kimmel last night (October 28).

The “Without a Paddle” star declared that his Beverly Hills County Clerk’s Office nuptials on October 17th made him the “luckiest man in America.”

Shepard explained, "It was just Kristen and I at this lonely courthouse so they brought us this cake afterwards."

Apparently the cake had “The World’s Worst Wedding” written on it- “How many people can say they threw 'The World's Worst Wedding?'" asked Dax.

Of his experience at Kimmel’s own wedding over the summer, Shepard stated, "There were helicopters overhead. It felt like an episode of M*A*S*H," he recalled of Kimmel's big day. Not that I was counting your money, but I was counting your money at this thing. It was flying out the windows.

The Bridge: Matthew Lillard Deserves Applause For His Performance In “Old Friends”
I don’t often bring up Matthew Lillard’s part in The Bridge’s overarching storyline beyond whatever small part he might have gotten up to in the latest episode. This isn’t because I dislike Lillard or his portrayal of Daniel Frye – far from it. Rather, his role in Tate’s plans has seemed so small in comparison to more pressing matters that I don’t usually feel compelled to mention him aside from in passing. But “Old Friends” has forced my hand; I can no longer ignore Lillard’s performance. In the past, I’ve never known Lillard to be much of an actor. My exposure to him was limited to such light-hearted affairs as Scooby-Doo and Without a Paddle. I saw him in the terrifically heart-wrenching The Descendants, where he was far less used for comedy, but his part was so small he barely made a mark on me.

Dax Shepard Declines Sexiest Male Vegetarian Award from PETA
It’s always nice to be recognized as the sexiest anything, but Dax Shepard had to turn down PETA’s Sexiest Male Vegetarian of the Year Award this week.

The “Without a Paddle” stud was grateful for the gesture, but he explained that he’s actually eating meat again so the title wouldn’t be accurate.

Dax tweeted, “I’m really flattered to be named ‘Sexiest Vegetarian’ with @IMKristenBell, but sadly I can’t accept in good conscience because I eat chicken.”

He continued, “I was vegan for a year, but that ended 6 months ago. I aspire to be more like @IMKristenBell , but I’m not there yet.”...
