The film is one of the best films in Bengali film world.Anjan Das is a superb director and this is a master piece by him.The film deals with the life of a young girl played by Indrani Halder. This is Planman motion's 3rd bengali film and is a big hit like the other two.Great to see so many brilliant scripts and beautiful films. The movie basically is a poetry and the director has brilliantly turned this poem into a film for the silver screen.Indrani is superb as Tukun, the protagonist in the film who has lots of wishes and desires.Soumitra Chatterjee is her father in the film and he is one man who helps her to fulfill her dreams. Saanjhbaatir is a subtle and beautiful movie and is a landmark in Bengali film industry. This one by Anjan Das is a master piece!

The movie is about the broken and unrealized dreams of a girl, which ultimately come to fruition after some intense family drama. Bad sex remains a constant theme in the movie. The girl has a secret desire for intense love with a man of her dreams but that is shattered by experiences of attempted rape, imposition and unsavory sights of parental indiscretion. This movie is less movie, more poetry. The pace, dialogs, presentation, style all underscore the poetic influence. Its full of dreams and metaphors. Imaginary muses act as spiritual and emotional guides for the lonely girl in the movie. There is excellent cinematography. The director has beautifully orchestrated the use of nature both for sound and imagery.
Saanjhbathir Roopkathara is the story of a young girl who dreams of beauty, love and happiness. The lead role has been played by Indrani Halder who has many dreams and aspirations. Her dreams are broken when she meets a man.The role of Indrani's father is played by Soumitra Chatterjee and he is wonderful in his role. Director Anjan Das presents the story as a poetry beautifully. It is perhaps one of his best movie that I have seen. In the movie,Indrani's world is also presented through her father's wonderful paintings from which inspires her too a huge extent. Indrani Halder gracefully plays the title role with sincerity and maturity while Soumitra Chatterjee is sublime. The music is comparatively less when compared to other movies. While we see Indrani as a lonely dreamer, we gradually learn that she's not the only one and eventually she realizes that she's not lonely. The opening of the film is just awesome.Being a non -Bengali,it was difficult for me to understand this movie. In fact I had no idea about the movie and was forced by my friend to watch it.I would love to watch it again so that I get to know more about the movie. Its a must watch film for movie lovers who like watching serious movies.

'Saanjhbathir Roopkothara' tells the story of a young dreamer. While the title character dreams of beauty, love and happiness, her dreams are broken by her encounter with men she meets(the men are portrayed as lusting objects, with the exception of the father) and ultimately shattered by her father. Beautifully told, through poetry and symbolism, director Anjan Das presents Tukun aka Saanjhbathi's world. Her world is also presented through her father's wonderful paintings from which she draws inspiration. Indrani Halder gracefully plays the title role with sincerity and maturity while Soumitra Chatterjee is sublime. The music is less used when compared to other films but this makes Saanjhbathi's world more real. While we see her as a lonely dreamer, we gradually learn that she's not the only one and eventually she realizes that she's not lonely. The film opens at a night illuminated by a lit candle and ends at a stormy night and between all this night we see the journey of self-discovery of a lost father and a lost daughter. I would love to rewatch it and discover more symbolism.

Saanjhbathir Roopkothara is a low-budget tastefully made Bengali film produced by noted economist & management guru Arindam Chaudhuri, and is directed by Anjan Das.
Coming from economics and management background, it is commendable to see Arindam having such great taste for meaningful cinema.
The film was one of the contenders in the final short list for India's official entry to the Oscars (Devdas is the chosen one now).
She was born at the stroke of twilight to an artist father (Saikat) who saw a luminescent aura enveloping his newborn and named her Saanjhbathi (twilight lamp). Saanjhbathir Roopkathara (Strokes and Silhouettes) based on renowned poet-littérateur Joy Goswami's brilliant poetic prose and, spins the tale of the girl, fondly called Tukun by her loving parents, who grows up in the world of strokes and colors, seeking the meaning in her life, getting entwined in relationships just like any other girl her age, oscillating between comprehension and confusion and trying to detach herself from the turmoil around. Though the silhouettes do disappear leaving her unfulfilled, ultimately it is the intense creativity that comes to rescue, helping her towards a greater understanding of life and reuniting her with her roots.

Saanjhbaatir Roopkathara is a lovely picture about a young girl and her dreams.A great film by the director and he has made amazing effort to make such a movie.I must say it is technically among the top movies that I have ever come across.I am a movie buff and simply love talking about them after I watch them. The stars in it be the lead actress Indrani Haldar or Soumitra Chatterjee playing her father, both are simply brilliant. The movie is a poetry on the big screen and brings the best out of Bengali cinema. Its a must watch film for movie lovers who like watching serious movies. The pace, dialogs, presentation, style all underscore the poetic influence.Saanjhbaatir Roopkathara full of dreams and metaphors. Saanjhbaatir Roopkathara also known as the Silk and silhouettes made huge waves in the world of Bengali cinema when it released. It was a huge hit and one of my favourite film made under Arindam Chaudhuri's production house. The story of the movie is based on a novel by Joy Goswami. Starring Indrani Halder and Soumitra Chatterjee, the movie has been made superbly by Anjan Das.It is more of a poetry and very beautifully executed. Saanjhbathir Roopkathara tells the story of a young dreamer. Indrani Halder acted exceptionally well. She plays the role of a woman keen on writing poetry but had no idea on how to do it. Her father(Soumitra Chatterjee),who keenly supported her introduced her to Pablo Neruda's collection and so poetry started at a young age.It is a brilliantly made film. I am very fond of Bengali films and this one is one of my all time favorite with everything beautifully done,be it acting, screenplay or direction.

Planman Motion Pictures created a stir with its debut release, Saanjhbatir Roopkathara,a Bengali movie in 2002.Anjan Das as the director has done a brilliant job once again as in most of the pictures that he has made till date.Soumitra Chatterjee and Indrani Haldar have performed excellently. The movie is all about a girl, played by Indrani Haldar and her unfulfilled dreams & aspirations to become a poet.It is about how her father,Soumitra Chatterjee helps her to fulfill her dream of becoming a poet. This is how the story goes on.Both Indrani & Soumitra have given brilliant performance. Indrani Halder gracefully plays the title role with sincerity and maturity while Soumitra Chatterjee is sublime. The music is less used when compared to other films which gives the movie a real feel.I have seen this movie more than once.Every time it appears to me with a slightly different meaning and but I never feel bored.I really love watching such movies.

Saanjhbathir Roopkathara is a beautiful movie directed by Anjan Das. The movie is all about poetry. Joy Goswami is the story writer, also one my favorite poet. Saanjhbathir Roopkathara is a low-budget Bengali film produced by Arindam Chaudhuri, directed by Anjan Das. Saanjhbathir Roopkathara is about the unrealized dreams of a girl, played by Indrani Haldar. Indrani Halder is excellent and has portrayed her character brilliantly. Her dream is ultimately turned into reality by her father, played by Soumitra Chatterjee , who supported her and thus helped her start writing poetry at a young age. Saanjhbathir is an example of a great Bengali movie to the world and is one of the best till date. The director is excellent and so is the cinematography. It is a must watch for all movie lovers.Saanjhbaatir Roopkathara is a landmark in the world of Bengali cinema.
Sanjhbatir roopkothara by Anjan Das is a beautiful movie. I saw this in a film festival in LA where director presented the movie with an introductory speech. Writer of the story is Joy Goswami. Joy is one my favorite poet. This is joy's first attempt to write a novel and a successful one.
No wonder movie is also all about poetry. Indrani Halder acted very well, she wanted to write poetry, but didn't know what to write or where to start. Her father (acted by Soumitra chatterjee) introduced her to Pablo Neruda's collection. So poetry started at a young age.
Its a must see film for serious movie goers.
This was my comment after seeing first time in LA, film festival. After this I have seen the movie several times and also read the book. Every time it appeared to me with a slightly different meaning, but I was never bored to see the movie. I hope to write a new review when I am settled down with all the collective reviews.

It is an excellent movie by Planman motion pictures that beautifully portrays the dreams and desires of a young girl willing to become a poet. Saanjhbaatir Roopkathara revolves around Indrani Halder, the lead in the film playing the character Tukun. The movie has been beautifully told as a poetry by director Anjan Das. Tukun's world is also presented through her father's wonderful paintings from which she draws inspiration. Indrani Halder gracefully plays the title role with sincerity and maturity while Soumitra Chatterjee is sublime. While we see her as a lonely dreamer, we gradually learn that she's not the only one and eventually she realizes that she's not lonely. I am a Bengali and am an avid lover of Bengali films. It is a beautifully made film and would love to watch it again and again to discover more about the film.

Saanjhbatir Roopkathara is a Bengali film directed by Anjan Das, written by Partha Banerjee. Music of the film has been given by Jyotishka Dasgupta, produced by Arindam Chaudhuri's Planman Motion Pictures. It stars Indrani Halder and Soumitra Chatterjee in the lead role where they play a daughter and a father.Indrani is the protagonist of the film where the story is based on her.She plays the role of this young girl having dreams very well. She is one of the best actress that I have seen in Bengali cinema.Soumitra Chatterjee who plays the role of her father is superb in his role.He plays his role perfectly where he helps his daughter to fulfill her dreams. It is somewhat an inspirational film for many. I particularly like how the director Anjan Das has made the film.He has converted this beautiful poetry into a wonderful film on canvas. An excellent film indeed.
