When Michael McElhatton was researching the prison scenes for this film he went to one of Ireland's Prisons. While he was there he met prisoners who were huge fans of the series Paths to Freedom (2000) in which Rats first appeared. Some of the prisoners had taken the character of Rats to their hearts that they wrote some of Rats' sayings on their cell walls.
