Image
It's time to head back to Camp Crystal Lake. The Friday the 13th franchise is making a resurgence with new content featuring Jason Voorhees in the works, and first up will be Crystal Lake, a new series at Peacock that will serve as a prequel to the original film.

Previously, it was reported that Linda Cardellini had been cast as Pamela Voorhees, the Betsy Palmer-portrayed killer from the first Friday the 13th movie. On social media, per the Alone in the Darkpodcast, new images have been shared from the set of Crystal Lake. They reveal a sneak peek at the campground where Jason Voorhees will inevitably perish, leading to his mother carrying out her bloody revenge. One photo also unveils a first look at Cardellini in wardrobe as Mrs. Voorhees.

We spoke about this Tuesday! The accuracy of the period piece & the faithfulness to the Og flick. Shoutout to...

Crystal Lake: Linda Cardellini’s Pamela Voorhees has been spotted on the set of Friday the 13th TV series!
On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian, production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. Things were moving ahead at a good pace, filming was expected to begin last July, but then the project hit a speed bump at the end of April with the firing of Fuller and his frequent collaborator Jim Danger Gray. Things got back on track in late August with the hiring of a new showrunner – and that person is Brad Caleb Kane, who also serves as co-showrunner and executive producer of It: Welcome to Derry,...

How the Rage Virus Has Evolved ’28 Years Later’ with New Mutations [Interview]
Image
It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory in the new trilogy-starter 28 Years Later, and the infected have evolved since director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland teamed on 28 Days Later.

That presents a whole new set of obstacles and intense situations when young Spike (Alfie Williams) leaves the safety of his community and embarks on a dangerous mission. Especially considering that the infected are still human.

Despite sharing common ground, the rage virus is grounded more in reality and doesn’t transform its infected into zombies, no matter how ravenous or violent they can be.

Screenwriter Alex Garland broke down his approach to evolving the infected for 28 Days Later in a recent chat. He tells Bloody Disgusting, “I think it was the product of conversation, and essentially, it went like this: if infected are still around, how are they still around? And actually,...

It’s Not Borderlands, the Worst Video Game Movie Stars Christian Slater With a Horrendous 1% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
The video game curse strikes again! While gamers and movie fans alike are still reeling from the spectacular failure of Borderlands at the box office, it’s worth remembering that Hollywood’s obsession with adapting interactive entertainment has produced far worse results.

The Eli Roth-directed Borderlands adaptation starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart may have crashed and burned with a dismal 10% Rotten Tomatoes score, but it’s practically Oscar-worthy compared to the absolute bottom of the video game movie barrel.

That dubious honor belongs to a film so terrible, it makes Borderlands look like a masterpiece.

When you’re alone in the dark, the real horror is the movie itself

Long before Borderlands disappointed audiences worldwide, a pioneering survival horror game called Alone in the Dark revolutionized gaming in 1992. This groundbreaking title featured 3D characters against pre-rendered backgrounds and established many conventions that would later define the horror genre in games like Resident Evil.

Uwe Boll at an event for BloodRayne (2005)
First Shift review – disaster master Uwe Boll’s latest goes on patrol, Training Day-style
Uwe Boll at an event for BloodRayne (2005)
Boll shores up his reputation for terrible film-making as odd-couple rookie cops bond over a cute dog between gun rampages

The most interesting thing about this crushingly mediocre cop movie is that it’s directed by the notorious Uwe Boll, who is a character more bizarre than any drafted for the screen – at one point he invited his severest critics to fight him in the boxing ring. While the poor quality of his work, especially his computer game adaptations, is perhaps overhyped – are they that bad? – there’s less dispute that his films are largely not financially successful, and his output has slowed after a now-abandoned retirement. One of his weirder re-emergences recently was playing himself in Radu Jude’s acclaimed Romanian art film Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World from 2023 – after which he made this lukewarm mess.

As the title might suggest, the idea...

The 17 Best Video Game Movies of All Time, from ‘Mortal Kombat’ to ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’
Image
[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in October 2023. It has been updated to coincide with the theatrical release of “Until Dawn.”]

Every year, gamers ask themselves: Is this the year video game movies finally gain some respect? And the answer in the year 2025, is, unequivocally, yes.

The sea change in video game movies’ respectability at the box office kickstarted in 2023, which saw three films based on existing games release in theaters. None were outright critical successes. Quite the opposite, actually: critics saw “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” as unremarkable and mediocre, “Gran Turismo” as a glorified advertisement, and “Five Nights as Freddy’s” as a complete borefest. But the movies all performed respectably at the box office, with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” becoming the second-highest grossing film of the year, and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” smashing expectations to become one of 2023’s biggest horror movies.

These successes foreshadowed the slow rise of video game films as a dominant trend in franchise cinema. 2024 saw “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” release to $491.9 million,...

A Massive Video Game Movie Flop Tried To Crowdfund A Sequel — And Failed Miserably
Image
Video game adaptations are quickly becoming the next big thing in Hollywood, with movies like "A Minecraft Movie" and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and TV shows like "Fallout" and "The Last of Us" all finding massive success. That's a trend that no one would have predicted a couple decades ago, back when the very notion of a video game movie conjured thoughts of low budgets, lousy reviews, C-list actors, and box office deficits.

Back in those golden days, no one was more infamous for his video game movie flops than controversial German filmmaker Uwe Boll. Throughout the aughts, Boll threw up bomb after bomb, adapting games like "Alone in the Dark," "Dungeon Siege," "BloodRayne," "House of the Dead," and "Far Cry." He's arguably the man most responsible for the hellish reputation of video game movies at the time. In 2007, Boll directed "Postal," based on the game series of the...

This Free-to-Stream Hidden Horror Gem is a Terrifying Lovecraftian Masterpiece
Image
Lovecraftian horror remains the most difficult to adapt in filmic form. Think about not just the writer’s work, but the litany of homages and broader sense Lovecraftian horror works that have graced fiction in the decades since. Principally, the horror is that of the unknown. Some nebulous, unseen terror that, while effective in writing, proves incredibly challenging to actualize and visualize on a movie screen. For every Dagon and Underwater, there’s Alone in the Dark and The Barge People.

For as truly horrible as the actual writer himself was, Lovecraft’s influence on the horror genre remains unmatched, so it makes sense that burgeoning filmmakers, especially, would hope to imbue their debuts with some kind of Lovecraftian homage. Go to any bookstore anywhere – Lovecraft continues to dominate the market. Among Lovecraftian horror movies, especially low-budget offerings, might I introduce you to one of the best to ever do it?...

‘A Minecraft Movie’ surprised everyone with record-breaking box office. Could awards be next?
Image
Minecraft blew theater doors wide open in its initial weekend, surpassing even optimistic projections and grossing a record-breaking $163 million domestic — the best domestic debut of all time for a video-game adaptation. We’re in a new era for video-game adaptations, with the series The Last of Us and Fallout becoming serious Emmy players and films like the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and The Super Mario Bros. Movie proving wildly popular at the box office. It’s a far cry from, well, Far Cry and other maligned adaptations of yore, as Hollywood studios are finally figuring out how to adapt and sell video-game-derived movies to the masses. Considering that The Super Mario Bros. Movie contended for Golden Globes, could A Minecraft Movie’s follow a similar trajectory and translate its box-office success into awards love?

The first live-action feature-length video-game adaptation intended for theaters was 1993’s Super Mario Bros. Taking liberties...

Initial Episodes of ‘TerrorBytes’ Docuseries Are Well-Crafted Love Letters to Horror Gaming [Review]
Image
“For a period, it really seemed like survival horror had died. But like the zombies that plague its hallways, it always gets back up. You cannot kill survival horror.”

So posits Doctoral Researcher, Kaytlin Blackmore, in TerrorBytes: The Evolution of Horror Gaming’s debut episode. It’s a rhapsodic reflection on how the genre in question has managed to endure across the generations, in the face of ever-shifting consumer tastes, adversarial cultural forces, and unfavourable regime changes on the publishing front. More importantly, though, it’s just a fundamentally warm and fuzzy sentiment that resonates throughout the entirety of this community-backed docuseries.

Constructed in a way that recalls the reverent originals that you often find while browsing Shudder (i.e. Horror’s Greatest or The 101 Scariest Horror Movie Moments of All Time), TerrorBytes is first & foremost an admiring look at survival horror over the ages. So rather than scrutinising the...

Get a first look at Armie Hammer dealing out vigilante justice in the Uwe Boll movie The Dark Knight
Image
The concept for this upcoming film almost sounds like a throwaway punchline in a comedy — “Controversial acting figure Armie Hammer will attempt to make a comeback…but it will be in an Uwe Boll movie. This movie will be about a vigilante who deals his own brand of justice and it’s titled…The Dark Knight.” However, not only is this movie happening, it’s already well into production in Zagreb, Croatia. Boll stated, “The story of The Dark Knight couldn’t be a more current topic, and I’m excited to bring it to life with this excellent cast.”

You can now get a new look at The Dark Knight as Variety has shared a couple of new images from the production. Additionally, the cast has added Costas Mandylor, who is a regular actor in the Saw franchise. The Dark Knight is based on an original script by Boll,...

The Closeted Imagination: Doug Dibbern and Richard Scott Larson on Film Memoirs
Image
I was a film studies student before I ever thought about writing a memoir, so it made sense that my first book would center a deep engagement with the movies as I told a story about my own life. My memoir The Long Hallway is a coming-out and coming-of-age story told through the lens of my childhood obsession with John Carpenter’s classic horror film Halloween, specifically the masked character of Michael Myers as an embodiment of my closeted and—at least to my mind at the time—dangerous and insidious self.

I shared early drafts with film scholar and essayist Doug Dibbern, a friend and colleague whose memoir was also published around the same time as mine. Alone in the Dark: Cinephilia and the Heroic Imagination traces a lineage of film viewing alongside a genealogical and intellectual origin story in what becomes a moving portrait of the development of an aesthetic sensibility.

Armie Hammer to Star in Uwe Boll's Next Film - Which Shares Its Title With a Beloved Batman Movie
Image
Actor Armie Hammer was on the rise when his career took a major hit in 2021. At the time, allegations of misconduct were leveled against Hammer, and offers for new roles in Hollywood films immediately dried up.

After four years, Hammer is looking to get his acting career back on the rails. He has recently been hosting a podcast, looking to show another side of himself as he takes on more acting work. Per Variety, his next role will see him playing a vigilante in a movie called The Dark Knight. While the movie happens to share a title with a beloved film directed by revered filmmaker Christopher Nolan, it is not a DC project focused on Batman... though, with Hammer in the lead, it's still starring someone who was once also cast as the popular superhero.

Jason Statham Starred In One Of The Worst Video Game Movie Flops Of All Time
Image
Director Uwe Boll has a reputation as one of the worst film directors of all time. In the mid-2000s, he helmed a string of well-publicized but critically savaged video game adaptations that immediately sunk to the bottom of cineastes' estimations. In 2003, he made "House of the Dead," and followed that in 2005 with both "Alone in the Dark" and "BloodRayne." He chased those with "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale," "BloodRayne 2: Deliverance," and "Postal" all in 2007, and capped off his run in 2008 with "Far Cry." Fans of the games on which those films are based were incensed that Boll should so clumsily handle the source material, and fans of the cinematic medium were incensed that

Despite his critical reputation, Boll has remained prolific, sometimes helming multiple pictures a year. He directed "First Shift" and "Bandidos" in 2024, and is set to release "Run" in 2025.

Cillian Murphy Won’t Appear in First Film of New ’28 Years Later’ Trilogy
28 Years Later (2025)
After the internet went wild speculating that the zombie featured in the excellent 28 Years Later trailer was a zombified Jim, the character played by Cillian Murphy in 2002’s 28 Days Later, Empire Magazine has confirmed that the actor won’t appear at all in the upcoming first entry in the planned trilogy.

Director Danny Boyle reteams with writer Alex Garland on 28 Years Later, with Murphy serving as executive producer, which has only fueled the expectation that Jim would return.

Producer Andrew Macdonald told Empire of Murphy’s hopeful return, “[On] this, we wanted him to be involved, and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line. He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer, and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.

Armie Hammer takes the lead in Uwe Boll’s vigilante thriller The Dark Knight… and no, he’s not playing Batman
Image
As part of his comeback tour, embattled actor Armie Hammer is ready to gear up and dole out some justice as the star of Uwe Boll‘s latest feature, The Dark Knight. Principal photography for Boll’s vigilante thriller begins in Croatia on January 27, with Hammer eager to step into the scene.

According to Variety, The Dark Knight is based on an original script by Boll, with Hammer playing Sanders, “who takes justice into his own hands as he sets out to hunt down criminals. While his crusade transforms him into a social media sensation and a hero in the eyes of the public, the local police chief sees him as a menace to society and aims to take him down.”

“The story of ‘The Dark Knight’ couldn’t be a more current topic, and I’m excited to bring it to life with this excellent cast,” said Boll about his latest endeavor.

Armie Hammer Sets Acting Return As The Dark Knight... In Uwe Boll Vigilante Thriller
Image
After missing out on the chance to play Batman in George Miller's defunct Justice League Mortal, Armie Hammer will finally get the opportunity to suit-up as The Dark Knight. Well, a Dark Knight.

Hammer, whose career came to a screeching halt in 2021 following some pretty disturbing allegations of sexual misconduct, is set to play the lead in a movie called The Dark Knight from director Uwe Boll, who has previously helmed classics such as BloodRayne, House of the Dead, and Alone in the Dark.

The Lone Ranger and The Social Network star was accused of sexual abuse (involving cannibalistic and Bdsm fetishes) by several women, but The Los Angeles County D.A.’s office decided not to file any charges against the actor following a lengthy investigation by the LAPD.

Based on an original script by Boll, Hammer has signed on to play Sanders, a man "who takes justice...

20 Years Ago, Metacritic's Worst-Rated Live-Action Video Game Movie Was Released
Image
For many years, the high-water marks for movies based on video games were Paul W.S. Anderson's 1995 fight film "Mortal Kombat" and his 2002 zombie flick "Resident Evil." One can see what a sorry state we were in if those two mediocre films were the high-water marks of anything. Adapting video games to the big screen has long been tricky for Hollywood. These films are often lambasted as terrible and have typically bombed ("Kombat" and "Resident" notwithstanding). Alternatively, Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel's 1993 adaptation of "Super Mario Bros." is deeply beloved by a passionate cult of weirdos who love its zany ideas (a cult I belong to), but most folks didn't like how far the film strayed from Shigeru Miyamoto's Nintendo property.

There are many reasons why it's hard to adapt video games into good movies. For one, most video games are predicated on action and interactivity, while films...

After The Last Of Us, It's Time For One Of The Greatest Video Game Stories Ever Told To Get A Live-Action Adaptation Too
Image
Now that The Last of Us has been successfully adapted into a live-action series on HBO, its time for Red Dead Redemption to finally hit the big screen in a movie franchise. Historically, live-action video game adaptations have been notoriously bad. The movie versions of Doom, Hitman, and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider were all widely panned by critics and dismissed by fans. One of the biggest problems was that, like a lot of early comic book films, the early video game movies were embarrassed by their source material. The original Mario movie is a Mario movie in name only.

That all turned around in 2023 with the blockbuster success of HBOs The Last of Us. With the video games writer-director Neil Druckmann on board as a co-showrunner, The Last of Us faithfully adapted the game in a way that pleased both long-time players and newcomers. And The Last of Us is...

Silent Hill 2 Remake Review – Silence Is Golden (PS5)
Image
When the Silent Hill 2 remake was announced two years ago in late 2022, it was met with a great deal of skepticism. Believe it or not, this wasn’t down to the usual cliché of gamer cynicism, there were actually a handful of good reasons to be trepidatious about this project.

First off, there was the fact that the Silent Hill franchise had been left out to dry by Konami since the release of the spinoff title Silent Hill Book of Memories in 2012,, and public opinion of the Japanese company had also soured a great deal since then. Add to that the fact that the Silent Hill 2 remake was being handled by Bloober Team, a studio whose track record has been rather spotty at best.

Finally, there is also the small factor that Silent Hill 2 is a timeless masterpiece that is particularly beloved for its very specific tonal...

5 Years After The Sopranos, James Gandolfini Was the Best Part of This Forgotten Gangster Film
Image
In 2012, filmmaker Andrew Dominik released the follow-up to his critically acclaimed film, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; its name, Killing Them Softly. Unfolding during the 2008 Presidential election, this film tells the story of a hitman hired to tie up loose ends following the robbery of a high-stakes Mafia poker game.

Related 10 Underrated Gangster Movies That Are Flawless From Beginning to End

There are plenty of underrated gangster films that are just as good as many of the iconic staples in the genre.

At the time of its release, Killing Them Softly became a misunderstood failure in nearly every sense of the word, one that earned the rarest of cinematic audience scores and almost burnt down all the goodwill its relatively novice filmmaker had made for himself. If Killing Them Softly is remembered for anything today, it's for being one of the final movies to feature...

23 Years Later, ‘Silent Hill 2’ Is Still Scary As Hell
Image
When Capcom released its reimagining of Resident Evil 2 in 2019, it was lauded as one of the best horror games ever made. Since then, it’s been the blueprint for other studios to follow for their (many) remakes. Some were successful, like EA’s Dead Space (2023), which kept just enough of its source material’s DNA intact while updating its combat. Others flopped, like Thq Nordic’s Alone in the Dark (2024), which attempted to completely overhaul an outdated 1992 game, but failed to deliver the level of terror of its modern peers.

Danny Boyle Filmed ’28 Years Later’ With an iPhone 15 Pro Max
Image
Production wrapped earlier this summer on Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later that intends to launch a brand new trilogy. Boyle and Alex Garland are reteaming for the planned 28 Years trilogy, with Garland writing the first movie and Boyle back in the director’s chair to bring the horror to the screen.

On that note, an article over on Wired this week reveals that 28 Years Later was at least partially filmed with “a bunch of adapted iPhone 15s,” specifically the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Wired details in their insightful report on the production, “…the Hollywood thriller, with its budget of $75 million, [is] the biggest movie to date filmed with smartphones.”

“Principal filming for 28 Years Later wrapped at the end of August, and until now the production has kept under wraps the fact that the movie was shot with smartphones,...

Sistas Season 8: Release Date, Cast, Story & Everything We Know
Image
After only a few months of waiting, Sistas season 8 is back and there's been plenty of news about release dates, storylines, and more. From the creator of the Madea movies franchise, Sistas is another of Tyler Perry's drama series made for BET. Premiering in 2019, Sistas follows a group of four single black women who encounter the many ups and downs of modern personal, professional, and romantic life. It's a non-Madea Tyler Perry production, but it still has an equal helping of comedy mixed in with the drama.

The series is popular enough that it even led to a spin-off, Zatima, which premiered in 2022. Sistas season 7 premiered on January 3, 2024, and was split into two parts, with part 2 beginning on May 29, 2024. Sistas season 8 was announced before season 7 even finished, though not much news was initially revealed. However, much more has been announced since, with a release date, trailer, story details, and...

We Don’t Even Need Dwayne Johnson Now: AI Shows What a God of War Anime Looks Like

The God of War gaming franchise is one of those big franchises that is yet to receive a live-action adaptation or an animated series. Following on from the success of HBO’s The Last of Us and Netflix’s The Witcher, entertainment fans are seemingly in the era of good video game to TV adaptations.

Sure, fans have seen some not-so-good adaptations in the past, like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010), Street Fighter (1994), Alone in the Dark (2005) and so on. But with recent hits like The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) and Arcane (2021), fans are filled with high expectations for a successful adaptation of one of the best gaming franchises in history.

From Alone In the Dark To Dead Island 2, These Are 5 of the Most Divisive Games Ever Released
Image
Dead Island 2 was the sequel to the acclaimed 2011 title. The game was divisive because players had incredibly varying reactions towards it. However, it wasn’t the only divisive game released recently.

Alone in the Dark was another title that was a hot topic of discussion for gamers, since the video game community is made of individuals who do not usually shy away from letting their impressions of a title known. These five titles had incredible variance in their reception among players and critics.

#5 Dead Island 2

The sequel to the zombie action RPG, Dead Island 2 was a title that was criticized and praised for several reasons. The positives about the game were the lack of bugs, great optimization, and an enjoyable gameplay loop. However, there were some issues with the game’s plot and writing which, one is bound to notice.

From Laughing Stock to Emmys: The Rise of Video Game Adaptations
Image
It’s an interesting time to write about video game adaptations, especially in light of the Borderlands disaster.

The entire point was to talk about the colossal leap forward in game adaptations from the days of the Bob Hoskin Super Mario Brothers absurdity to Amazon Prime’s Fallout.

The latter is sitting on 16 awards and nominations, while the former remains the butt of jokes, memes, and gifs to this day.

(Courtesy of Prime Video)

Once upon a time, Hollywood just wanted to cash in on a popular video game franchise.

Quality be damned. While the money factor hasn’t changed, Tinseltown now knows the audience is hypersensitive to adaptations of beloved franchises.

The Saddest Station 19 Character Exits
Image
Station 19, a procedural drama about firefighters in Seattle, began as a spinoff of Grey's Anatomy, though the show built its own audience over its seven seasons. Like its parent show, Station 19 was known for big emergencies and big emotions. The team of firefighters that served Station 19 came to the aid of Seattle citizens with grace and authenticity, often providing as much emotional support as they did physical support.

Though Station 19 had multiple captains over the years, they were primarily led by Andrea "Andy" Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz), who finally officially became captain in Season 7. By her side were firefighters like Maya Bishop (Danielle Savre), who was a former Olympic athlete, Victoria Hughes (Barrett Doss), who was Station 19's most compassionate team member, and Robert Sullivan (Boris Kodjoe), a former Marine whom Andy was married to for a while. Over the show's seven seasons, the characters experienced a lot of life,...

Titanfall 2 and 4 Other Games That Failed, But Were Undeniably Ahead of Their Time
Image
Titanfall 2 is a title that will go down in history as a title that offered tonnes of quality but wasn’t appreciated enough, but it wasn’t the only one that didn’t get its due credit.

Some other video games, too, are so ambitious and ahead of their time that it does them more harm than good. These five titles managed to challenge the status quo but couldn’t manage to succeed.

#5 Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2 is a title that came out in 2016, eight years before the time of writing. Respawn Entertainment created the perfect concoction of incredible gameplay with fast-paced movement and controllable mechs. However, the title was among the few that balanced single-player and multiplayer content quality.

Uwe Boll Is Out of Retirement and Back in the Director's Chair With First Trailer for 'First Shift' [Exclusive]
Image
Controversial German director Uwe Boll is officially back. The iconic yet often maligned mastermind best known for video game adaptations like BloodRayne, House of the Dead, and Alone in the Dark has been largely missing from the minds of U.S. audiences since his 2016 film Rampage: President Down. His latest title, First Shift, looks to change that as he returns to theaters in America at the end of August with an exploration of the high-octane, dangerous life of a rookie police officer. Collider can exclusively share the official trailer, which shines a light on the crime drama starring Kristen Renton as she experiences the highs and lows of the job and tries to break through to her tough-as-nails partner.

Interview with the Vampire (1994) – The Test of Time
Image
We don’t get a ton of Gothic or romanticized horror anymore, at least not in the sense of the old days. The old days had a bit of a stretch too as I’m talking about the Universal classics and Val Lewton all the way through at least the early run of Hammer Films. To that end, what creature is more romantic or at least romanticized than Dracula and any of his vampire off shoots? While many of the vampiric screen adaptations have that feel to them from Frank Langella to Gary Oldman and David Bowie sandwiched in between, there are few vampires who embody that ideology more than those found in the writings of Anne Rice. While her novel Interview with the Vampire came out all the way back in 1976, it would take nearly 20 years for the adaptation to hit theaters with the movie of the same name...

“They Don’t Let Studios Grow”: Layoffs Risk Snuffing Out Gaming’s Next Hidetaka Miyazaki – Is Innovation Dead Before It Starts as Layoffs Continue

The games industry is on the precipice; so much is currently at stake, and the big corporations seem intent on barreling towards the edge without a thought about the potential fallout.

With so much news of studio closures and big buyouts that result in more studio closures, it feels like unique games are not being given the chance they deserve anymore, in favor of the big proven IPs getting the spotlight.

Hi-Fi Rush was a critical success and even came to PS5, yet Tango Gameworks was closed

After Shutting Down Jodie Comer’s Alone in the Dark Dev, Embracer Group Announces Controversial Direction Involving AI
Image
Gaming’s current whoopee cushion, Embracer Group, continues to struggle and fumble to recover from its recent failures. After laying off nearly 4500 employees, endangering the entire gaming industry, and canceling 80 projects since June 2023 alone, it’s clear why almost nobody holds the company in high regard anymore.

However, the company may yet need to brace itself once more for a storm of hatred, as right after shuttering Pieces Interactive, it is now more aggressively adopting AI into its and its subsidiaries’ workings.

The Bikeriders Star Reflects on Losing Furiosa Role
Image
Anya Taylor-Joy excelled with her performance as a younger Furiosa in the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, taking over the role from Charlize Theron. However, before she was cast, Jodie Comer had been in consideration for the lead role in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Comer can be seen in the new film The Bikeriders, coming to theaters on June 21. To promote the film, Comer was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter. She was asked about the comments recently made by director George Miller revealing how he'd had preliminary talks with Comer about playing Furiosa in the Fury Road prequel. While Comer didn't ultimately land the role, she was flattered to be considered and still grateful to have had the chance to converse with Miller.

‘Alone in the Dark’ Remake Developer Pieces Interactive Shut Down
Uwe Boll in Alone in the Dark (2005)
The current precariousness of the video games industry took another hit today. Weeks after Embracer Group revealed that Pieces Interactive’s remake of Alone in the Dark had “performed below management expectations”, it’s now being reported that the developer has been shut down by Embracer Group. Pieces Interactive had posted to the main page of their website and on the studio’s social media accounts the caption “Pieces Interactive: 2007–2024. Thanks for playing with us.”

Per Game Developer, former Pieces Interactive character artist Gustav Pethrus confirmed via LinkedIn that the company was indeed closing.

The closure of Pieces Interactive follows the layoffs done earlier in the year at the developer by Embracer Group, which was part of a major restructuring by the company. Borderlands developer Gearbox Interactive and Evil Dead: The Game developer Saber Interactive had been sold off back in March, while Eidos Montreal (which Embracer had acquired...

The Best Games For Failed Consoles
Image
There are a lot of reasons why a video game console can fail. Bad marketing, outdated technology, excessive price, lack of third-party titles, the impact of solid competition, and so on. So many factors go into the existence of these devices and so much can go wrong. Even Nintendo has stumbled so hard that their faulty decisions occasionally leave radioactive footprints in video gaming history.

Not every console can be a major success story, but no console is truly without value. Well, maybe the Mattel HyperScan…but other than that! Every failed console has at least something worth checking out. Hell, the Sega Dreamcast had Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and SoulCalibur and it was still the death knell for Sega making hardware!

So here are some of the best games to come from game systems that fell flat.

Skald: Against the Black Priory Review: A Singular and Idiosyncratic Throwback
Image
One of the first things the player does in Skald: Against the Black Priory is choose whether to turn on the filter to emulate a Crt screen. The game is, down to its every Commodore 64-colored pixel, a throwback experience, a party-based RPG that developer High North Studios has patterned after classics like the Ultima games of the 1980s. Yet for as overt as Skald may be about its influences, it takes those trappings in a new and idiosyncratic direction.

The game boasts a variety of distinct classes to choose not only for your player character but for the blank-slate mercenaries that you can hire in place of the premade story characters. With all sorts of warriors, thieves, spellcasters, and combinations thereof, Skald features an impressive number of permutations for your eventual six-character party, to the point where my single 25-hour playthrough hardly revealed all the classes and abilities that the game has to offer.

A Brief History of the Forgotten ‘Silent Hill’ Spin-Offs
Image
Konami may get a bad rap for having squandered the Silent Hill franchise in the years leading up to the recent series renaissance (which is set to culminate in both a big budget remake of Silent Hill 2 as well as a new Christophe Gans film), but there was a time when the company was criticized for releasing too much Silent Hill media in an attempt to keep the IP fresh in consumers’ minds.

While some of these franchise expansions were obvious cash-grabs, others experimented with the cursed town in ways that we’ve yet to see again. And in honor of the new Silent Hill experiences set to grace consoles and cinema screens in the upcoming year, today I’d like to look back on a collection of forgotten spin-offs from the 2000s that I think (mostly) deserve more love.
