"The Mask" seems like one of those movies that could only have existed in the 1990s. Though Chuck Russell's beloved 1994 comedy is known mostly for being one of the quintessential Jim Carrey classics that launched him to superstardom, it's also got a weird kind of '90s gloom and an oddly incongruous adult sensibility to it.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact "The Mask" was originally envisioned as a horror movie, or because it was directed by the guy that helmed "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" and the 1988 remake of "The Blob," but there was always something a little dark to a film that, on its surface, seemed like a good excuse to have Carrey chew scenery in his typical fashion. When Peter Greene's Dorian Tyrell donned the titular artifact at the end of the movie, for instance, it was genuinely a...

The Mask star Cameron Diaz is keen to reunite with Jim Carrey and return to the role that first made her a household name. Based on the comic book series of the same name, Carrey’s iconic 1994 comedy served as Diaz’s first movie role and would cement her as one of the most sought-after actors of the decade. Despite a disastrous 2005 sequel without his participation, there have been multiple calls to see Carrey return to the franchise. Late last year, the comedian admitted that he was still open to a potential sequel, given a good enough idea is found.
During a recent interview with Access Hollywood for her new Netflix movie Back in Action, Diaz was told of Carrey’s own interest in returning for The Mask 2 and was asked if she would be willing to return alongside him. Seemingly unaware of Carrey’s interest in returning to the franchise,...

Now that Cameron Diaz is back in action, she’s considering revisiting one of her most beloved roles.
When asked if she’d reunite with Jim Carrey for a sequel to their 1994 superhero comedy film The Mask, the 4x Golden Globe nominee seemed ready to reprise her role as lounge performer Tina Carlyle.
“If Jim’s on board, I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one,” Diaz joked to Access Hollywood while promoting her acting comeback in Back in Action, now streaming on Netflix.
Carrey previously addressed the possibility of masking up as Stanley Ipkiss once again, following his own return to the screen. “Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea,” he told ComicBook.com last month. “If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things.

Two of the best movies of Jim Carrey’s career got two of the worst sequels ever made, and they each used the same ridiculous premise to get around Carrey’s absence. Carrey has famously been trepidatious about doing sequels ever since his first one was a disaster. He prefers to explore new stories and new characters with each project instead of going back to rehash a familiar role. A lot of the sequels he’s been in, like Kick-Ass 2 and Batman Forever, have been sequels to movies he wasn’t in.
Of course, there have been a few exceptions. He reprised his role as Lloyd Christmas in the belated sequel to Dumb and Dumber, and he’s appeared as Dr. Robotnik in all three of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. But for the most part, Carrey has avoided making sequels. He never made a sequel to Liar Liar...

The Mask is one of Jim Carrey’s most popular comedies, and despite some very goofy jokes and ambitious effects, the movie has held up exceptionally well. It’s become a staple of the actor’s filmography, and there have been lots of talks recently about Carrey potentially returning to this property. However, with the disaster that was Son of the Mask, bringing back this iconic Jim Carrey character would have to be a delicate operation.
The Mask has such a unique concept that’s conceptually very easy to continue into another sequel - it would rely on Carrey’s slapstick comedy and the inherent silliness of the mask’s powers. The story wouldn’t need to be too complicated, and since Carrey would undoubtedly be the star of the show, there wouldn’t need to be too many characters either. A sequel could work, and it could reuse many...

What Did Jim Carrey Say About Returning In The Mask Sequel? (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Remember The Mask? That absolute riot of a movie where Jim Carrey transformed from an awkward bank clerk into a green-faced, cartoonishly chaotic tornado of hilarity? Undoubtedly, it was pure ‘90s gold, big teeth, zany antics, and a lot of ‘Ssssssmokin.’ And honestly, the 1994 cult classic didn’t just make us laugh; it launched Carrey into superstardom, raking in a jaw-dropping $351.5 million worldwide.
Fans have been dreaming of a sequel for years, and of course, who wouldn’t want more of Stanley Ipkiss and his mask-wielding shenanigans? The wait might be over because Jim Carrey recently spilled some tea about potentially revisiting his iconic role.

Jim Carrey opened up about the possibility of returning to his iconic role in The Mask, 20 years after the idea for a sequel was first floated. The original The Mask follows Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey), a mild-mannered bank clerk who transforms into a mischievous, wild version of himself when he dons a mysterious green mask. The film was a major box office success, grossing $351.5M worldwide and launching Carrey into superstardom. Carrey's talk of a sequel came after years of speculation about Carrey’s potential involvement in a sequel to the 1994 cult hit.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, he confirmed that while he has no interest in revisiting the character for the sake of monetary gain, a return is possible under the right conditions. Carrey explained that, for him, it’s not about cashing in on the success of the original film, but rather ensuring that any potential sequel offers...

Somebody stop him! Jim Carrey has been almost exclusively tied up in the franchise world, playing the cartoonish villain Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. But he has rarely brought his more iconic characters into the 21st century, only reprising Lloyd Christmas for Dumb and Dumber To. But he’s not entirely against it, saying he would don The Mask one more time under the right circumstances.
While Jim Carrey has previously said he has zero interest in reprising any of his most famous characters – giving the reason that it feels more like an imitation than anything – he seems to be backtracking on that now. In addition to saying he could see himself return as The Grinch provided motion capture is used, Jim Carrey said Stanley Ipkiss from The Mask could be on the table as well.

Is Warner Bros. dusting off The Mask for another try?
The original Jim Carrey-led comedy film The Mask from 1994 (based on the much more unhinged comic book published by Dark Horse) was a genuine box office hit.
11 years later, came the mother of all cash-grab sequels, Son of the Mask. This critically-reviled follow-up starred the 00’s-era staple of cinematic hijinks, Jamie Kennedy, as another man who happens across the titular face wear. Son of the Mask was a massive flop and effectively killed the franchise. Or did it?

A Jim Carrey franchise has received a surprising update a decade after the release of the latest sequel. The Emmy-nominated performer is best known for his roles in comedies, with his breakout roles coming in the mid-1990s in movies including Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. Over the years, he has appeared in a variety of well-known comedies such as Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty in addition to dramas including The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Cumulatively, his movies have grossed nearly $6 billion worldwide.
Although the star is now a part of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, where he has played the villain Dr. Robotnik in three consecutive installments, for quite some time he rarely made sequels to his movies. The one major exception was 1995's Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, though several follow-ups to his movies were made without his involvement, including 2007's...

Evan Almighty, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, and Son of the Mask are all considered to rank among the worst comedy movies of all time, and they share one glaring similarity. However, on the surface, the movies seem quite different despite all coming out in the 2000s. For instance, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd stars Derek Richardson and Eric Christian Olsen as two young men with perilously low IQs who become involved in a corrupt principal's scheme when they transfer from homeschooling to a public high school in the 1980s.
The absurd but more realistic premise of When Harry Met Lloyd feels very different from the other two titles, which both feature supernatural premises. Evan Almighty follows the biblically-themed story of a modern-day man being forced to re-enact the story of Noah's Ark while the latter follows a family that is thrown into chaos when...

Sequels that replace the original main star often fail due to audience wariness and a loss of the franchise's unique identity. Movies like "Grease 2" and "Mean Girls 2" lacked the charm and quotability of their beloved originals and were considered failures. Films such as "Ace Ventura Jr.: Pet Detective" and "Son of the Mask" suffered from the absence of Jim Carrey's comedic skill and were financial and critical failures.
There are plenty of movie sequels that replaced their original main star and ended up completely failing. Unfortunately, when movie studios find themselves with a successful film or series, they can’t help but keep making sequels, even when the original main star needed to be replaced. This can happen for a number of reasons, such as the original star not wanting to do a sequel, a follow-up not making any sense with the original character, or many...

Max will be losing a significant number of beloved movies and TV shows in December, including a handful of Christmas favorites. Titles like Elf, The Master, Happy Feet, A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, The Polar Express, Fred Claus, Scream (1 through 3), Misery, Spotlight, and dozens more are included on the list. While content removals are a regular part of the streaming landscape, the move comes at a time when Warner Bros. Discovery has placed an increased focus on Max's profitability.

Despite what Hollywood wants us to believe, not every movie ever made needs a sequel. This did not stop the studios from trying their hardest to churn them out, leaving movie fans with only one solution: forget the sequel exists. It’s a useful technique, but, ironically, it doesn’t work on the worst films. We can say to each other, for example, that Highlander II: The Quickening never happened all we want. In our broken, battered souls though, we know it exists. And it sucks so much. The memory endures, like a cinematic kidney stone.
Trying to forget works best on sequels so middling, or cynically shoveled out that there’s not much for our memories to grab on to. If we do remember them, it’s with a befuddled “how the hell did that happen?” or a “they got A-list actors for that?” kind of awe. And then we forget about them again.

Standalone sequels exist because some series want to try something different or make a quick buck, resulting in varying quality. Films like Son of the Mask and I Spit on Your Grave 2 are terrible and unrelated to their successful predecessors. The Suicide Squad and 10 Cloverfield Lane are tonally different from their predecessors, offering a more enjoyable and suitable experience.
A sequel, by definition, is a direct follow-up to another movie, but some sequels have little or no relation to their predecessors. They're called standalone sequels, and a surprisingly high number of them exist. Sometimes, it's simply because the series wants to veer off and try something new — perhaps to start an anthology series. However, in other cases, it's because putting a "2" after the original's title is an easy way to capitalize on the first film's success.
Therefore, the quality of sequels that don't connect to their original movies varies greatly.

Cult classic sequels like The Mask 3 and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 2 have the potential to capitalize on the superhero film dominance if given another chance. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man 4 could provide redemption for previous iterations and further explore beloved characters like Rhino and Peter Parker. Movies like Spawn 2, Hellboy 3, Constantine 2, and Dredd 2 have the potential to improve upon their predecessors with modern CGI and storytelling techniques, satisfying fans longing for sequels in these franchises. The Incredible Hulk 2 could also provide a much-needed standalone movie for the iconic character.

One name that is unquestionably synonymous with horror movies is Wes Craven. Mr. Craven is responsible for several game-changing films in the genre. His early career provided raw, grindhouse-esque classics like The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes. He skyrocketed into pop culture with fantasy horror like A Nightmare on Elm Street, then revitalized the genre in a waning era with the meta-slasher satire Scream.
Actor Jamie Kennedy recently appeared on the Inside of You podcast that’s hosted by Smallville‘s Michael Rosenbaum. Kennedy had played the iconic horror obsessive, Randy, in both Scream and Scream 2, which Wes helmed. According to ScreenRant, the Son of the Mask star would talk about how he discovered a specific method that Craven kept himself motivated in filmmaking.

It’s usually impossible to predict which movies are going to be great and which are going to be terrible before actually watching them, but there have been several exceptions throughout history where films haven’t been successful in hiding their poor quality before release. Whether it’s because of a terrible idea for the story or awful casting choices, there are certain indicators that show up time and time again when a movie is destined to fail from the start.
Quality in a movie is subjective, and while there are certain aspects of these projects that audiences might enjoy, most of them made specific decisions that immediately warned viewers not to waste their money. Even the best filmmakers couldn’t have saved some of these projects, many of which are plagued by offensive storylines and terrible performances that are just beyond redemption.

Visual effects artists have broken down how Jim Carrey’s 1994 movie The Mask was able to create the cartoonish spinning effect similar to the Looney Tunes’ Tasmanian Devil. Loosely based on the comic book series created by Doug Mahnke and John Arcudi, The Mask saw Carrey assume the role of hapless bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss who finds a magical mask that gifts him with the ability to animate himself and his surroundings. Following directly on from his major Hollywood breakout role in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask remains one of Carrey’s most iconic roles to date.
Recently, Corridor Crew released a new episode of their "VFX Artists React" series on YouTube, in which the trio of VFX artist discussed The Mask's effects in further detail. The segment reveals the techniques employed to Carrey’s Tasmanian Devil-like spinning effects, citing a combination of practical effects in regards to objects...

With so many horrible sequels available, picking the ten worst sequels of all time was challenging. Indeed, there have been numerous instances where sequels have fallen far short of their original counterparts, making them infamous examples of ‘how not to do a sequel.’
Thankfully, viewers on IMDb did most of the work for us, sharing their valuable insights and ratings, which we’ve used to compile this list.
What follows is a painstakingly curated breakdown of each terrible sequel. We delve into what specifically made these follow-ups lackluster and disappointing. Some of these sequels found their unfortunate place on this list despite being birthed from incredibly successful and well-received franchises.
They had every ingredient for success – a captive audience, proven characters, and established lore, yet they managed to fumble. Conversely, others continued on an already rocky path of subpar predecessor films, cementing their series as characterized by chronic cinematic failure.

One of the only good things to come out of Hollywood's obsession with grinding a good thing into the ground via unrelenting sequels are some of the titles. Whether characters are getting "back in the habit" or "dying harder," there's nothing better than a bonkers sequel subtitle. And while a subtitle isn't necessarily indicative of a film being good or bad, Hollywood has certainly churned out its share of sequels that truly didn't need to happen. Does anyone remember "Son Of The Mask" or "Jaws: The Revenge?" Hell, 20th Century Fox even greenlit "Elektra," a sequel to 2003's universally panned "Daredevil," just because the first movie made an okay profit despite being arguably one of the worst superhero movies ever made.
Over the years, and especially, in our nostalgia-obsessed present moment, we've been treated to all-manner of legacy sequel — some good, some terrible — as Hollywood increasingly turns to existing IPs...

Jack Osbourne, who discovery+ fans are accustomed to seeing hunting for ghosts and, most recently, Bigfoot, has taken on a new mission in his latest two-hour special – investigating an infamous paranormal hotspot where UFOs frequent, animal mutilation has been documented and, oh yeah, there’ve been reports of alien abduction.
But what Osbourne ends up seeing – and catching on camera – goes above and beyond his wildest expectations and leaves him saying, “We came here looking for UFOs and ended up finding ‘other things.’”
In “Jack Osbourne’s Night of Terror: UFOs,” the “Portals to Hell” star teams up with a couple of his actor friends, Jason Mewes and Jamie Kennedy, with the trio heading off to Utah’s Uinta Basin, where the notoriously creepy and mysterious Skinwalker Ranch sits. Jim Carrey turns 60 years old in just thirteen months, and the milestone could prove pivotal towards determining the trajectory of his career. The two-time Golden Globe winner has more than shown himself to be a phenomenal dramatic actor with the right material, but he built his entire brand on broad studio comedies that relied on his effortless charisma and natural sense of comic timing.
Of course, the sight of a guy in his sixties mugging for the camera and taking pratfalls would be something strange to see, and over the next couple of years, we could find Carrey blazing a brand new trail or simply continue to rely on what’s worked for him over the last quarter of a century. His performance in Sonic the Hedgehog was certainly a minor return to the glory days of old, and he’ll no doubt be back for the sequel, while more recently,...

Comedy sequels are arguably the most difficult type of follow-up to pull off, and the risk level increases the longer the gap since the first movie. Action and thriller franchises are almost expected to rehash the same plot and character beats over and over again, whereas a series designed entirely to generate laughs from the audience can’t exactly deliver the same joke a handful of times and expect it to remain fresh.
For every 22 Jump Street, Bill & Ted Face the Music or Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm, there’s a Dumb and Dumber To, Zoolander 2 or Son of the Mask at the other end of the scale, and as the years pass, it becomes more and more difficult to justify the existence of a long-delayed sequel to an established comedy hit.
That hasn’t stopped Vince Vaughn from confirming that he’s held talks with co-star Owen Wilson...

The Mask is a comedy classic that many remember Jim Carrey for. This 1994 neo-noir superhero comedy film became a cult classic and was loosely based on the comic book series. The film was a critical and commercial success that solidified Carrey as a prominent actor.

It had big shoes to fill that sadly didn't work out in many ways. The original Jim Carrey version still reigns supreme and it's no surprise it was nominated for many awards compared to the sequel that received low reviews.

1994’s The Mask was not just one of the biggest movies of that year, but it also helped launch Jim Carrey into the Hollywood big leagues. As you’d imagine, then, there were plans for more films at the time, but these ultimately stalled. There was a Carrey-less sequel called Son of the Mask in 2005, but no one needs to be reminded of that. All these years later, though, it looks like the Mask is coming back to the big screen. And it might not be just a one-off.
According to sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who said Carrey was returning as the green-headed goofball for a cameo in Space Jam: A New Legacy before it was confirmed via some leaked footage – Warner Bros. is actually planning on making two new Mask movies, so that a trilogy can be formed when factoring in the 1994 original. For most of his career following Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Jim Carrey tended to avoid making sequels to his hit movies, but that didn’t stop the studios from producing them anyway, even without his involvement. Based on how Son of the Mask, Evan Almighty and Ace Ventura Jr.: Pet Detective turned out, however, his decision proved to be a very wise one.
That being said, the 58 year-old appears to have softened his stance in recent years after returning to the role of Lloyd Christmas two decades later in Dumb and Dumber To, while Sonic the Hedgehog’s post-credits scene seemed to make it clear that Carrey’s Robotnik would be coming back for the sequel. Not to mention that there’ve been whispers that another Ace Ventura outing is on the cards for the actor, too.

Like how the headgear itself was trapped in a trunk for a thousand years at the beginning of the first movie, The Mask franchise has laid dormant for a long time, but it looks like it’s finally about to awaken. We know Warner Bros. is dusting off the character for a cameo in Space Jam 2, with Jim Carrey likely voicing the part. What’s more, this is probably a test run for a fully-fledged Mask 2, which would bring back Carrey as Stanley Ipkiss in the flesh for a belated sequel.

1994 was the year that Jim Carrey seemingly came out of nowhere to become one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber all arriving in theaters within the space of ten months and earning over $700 million at the box office combined. Carrey has since made sequels to two of those breakout hits, but we never got a follow-up to The Mask unless you count 2005’s Son of the Mask, which most people don’t because it was awful.
However, rumors of a long-delayed sequel have started picking up steam recently, with creator Mike Richardson revealing his interest in a female-driven spinoff, while we’ve previously reported that there was also interest in bringing Carrey back for both a second big screen outing as Stanley Ipkiss and an adult-orientated animated series on HBO Max.

We’ve been hearing a lot about Warner Bros.’ plans for The Mask over the past few months. Though the franchise, based around a mystical mask that gives the wearer reality-altering powers, has been dormant for a long while, the studio is in the midst of resuscitating it. As we’ve reported before, WB’s main plan is to get Jim Carrey back as Stanley Ipkiss to make this a proper sequel to the hit 1994 original. But it seems he won’t be the only A-list star on board.
According to sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us that the Mask will cameo in Space Jam 2 and Disney is developing a live-action Robin Hood, both of which we now know to be true – the studio is hoping to get a high profile name attached to play the villain and one actor they’re eyeing is Dwayne Johnson.

Over the weekend, we reported the surprise news that Jim Carrey would be getting back into the green as the Mask for Space Jam 2. It seems that Warner Bros. wants to stuff the sequel with as many cameos from their extensive library of IP as possible, with leaked photos also pegging the Joker, the Wicked Witch of the West and Pennywise as appearing in the film. In addition, we’ve heard that WB would like to get Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the movie, and potentially even Superman.
That’s quite a wishlist, but Jim Carrey returning for a short scene seems like it’s practically confirmed now. Word is that we’ll see him acting as a referee during one of the film’s basketball games. In addition, we’ve seen leaked images that show the return of the Mask at what appears to be some kind of makeup test.
