Hema malini is the only heroine with the track record of playing the romantic interest of all 5 Kapoor clan members of the time. Raj Kapoor in Sapnon ka Saudagar, Shammi Kapoor in Andaz, Randhir Kapoor in Haath ki Safai, Rishi Kapoor in this movie and Shashi Kapoor in 10 movies of which Trishul and Abhinetri were the most well known.
Rajesh Khanna use to practice his stage plays at the same building where Geeta Bali had a office . One day Rajesh bumped into Geeta and she offered him the lead role of the film " Ek Chadhar Mali Si". Khanna was happy but finally heard a few months later Dharmendra had signed the film. The film was shelved after Geeta Bali death in 1965. More than 20 years, Dharmendra discouraged his wife Hema Malini from taking Geeta's role, since he felt that the project was jinxed. But Hema took the role and broke the jinx and the film was completed and released in 1986.
The film was remade as a serial Kumkum in early 2000s starring Juhi Parmar.
The film was first being made with the title "Rano" with Dharmendra,Geeta Bali, Meena Rai. Geeta's husband was played by a local villager with no acting experience. Geeta got measles due to the dirty and unhealthy environment she was shooting in. After a few months she passed away leaving the film incomplete.
Raj Babbar was signed for the film. He took the director to meet Hema Malini. Sukhwant told Hema he would shelve the film if she said no to the role. Hema ended up agreeing to the film. Raj Babbar ended up leaving the film due to date issues and Rishi Kapoor was signed.
