There were several stories going around about the film. The first was that Manoj Kumar's father got angry at Manoj for not doing anything for his younger brother Rajeev. He yelled at Manoj to make a film for Rajeev and launch him. Finally Manoj relented and Painter Babu was born. Upon seeing the final product, Manoj's father grew even more angry and upset. He noticed Manoj had spent very little on the production, as oppose to the films he would direct and act in himself. Manoj's father fell in depression. Manoj denied all allegations. He stated that when he saw Rajeev narrating the scenes to the actors in Kranti, it was there and then he saw a spark of a actor in Rajeev. He did not say anything and would wait to ask Rajeev if he wanted to act.
Rajiv Goswami told Manoj he did not want a premiere for the film. He stated he wanted low expectations from the audience.
The first film of Rajiv Goswami, Meenakshi Seshadri, music composers Jagdish Khanna and Uttam Singh. Manoj Kumar also wanted to recurate his brother in law Ashok Bhushan as director by giving him Painter Babu & Ricky to direct.
Meenakshi Sesadshri actual name is Shashikala, Manoj Kumar gave her this screen name, incidently in Kranti, Hema Malini is called Meenakshi.
After blockbuster Kranti Manoj Kumar made this film Painter Babu to launch his brother Rajiv as actor and at the same time concentrated to launch his son Kunaal as hero and his other son Vishaal as singer in Ricky.
