Fans of director John G. Avildsen's "The Karate Kid" franchise will no doubt remember the emotional scene in the first film where a drunk Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) reflects on his early life in America. Dressed in his old army uniform, he toasts to a photograph of his late wife and shows a picture of her to Daniel (Ralph Macchio) who is just now learning of his sensei's complicated past.
Born in Okinawa, 18-year-old Miyagi immigrated to the United States after he unsuccessfully professed his love to Yukie, the woman who was arranged to marry his best friend, Sato. He met his wife in Hawaii while working in the cane fields, but their romance was quickly complicated by the United States' decision to enter World War II. When President Roosevelt ordered the incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese and Japanese American citizens in concentration camps, both Miyagi and his wife were relocated to Manzanar,...

In Rob Zombie’s latest horror film “31,” a group of carnival workers are traveling through the country in an Rv on Halloween night in 1976. On their trip, they’re stopped and attacked with only six of them taken alive. Soon, they’re taken to a strange building where three strangers in aristocratic garb force them to play a survival game: For the next 12 hours, they must wander through a maze of rooms evading murder and torture the entire time. If they survive for the full 12 hours, they’ll be set free, but if not, they’ll join their carnival friends in the grave. “31” stars Malcolm McDowell (“A Clockwork Orange”), Sheri Moon Zombie (“The Lords of Salem”), Richard Brake (“Game of Thrones”), E.G. Daily (“Rugrats”), Meg Foster (“They Live”), Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (“Cooley High”), and more. Watch the trailer for “31” above.

From horror to doco, Colin Delaney speaks to five film-makers about their feature length debut.
Director Kevin Smith famously funded his first film, Clerks, by selling off his prized comic book collection. Pedro Almodovar’s first foray into features was so technically flawed, he reportedly put it down to personal style. And finishing Hard Eight was a baptism of fire, according to Paul Thomas Anderson, who has been quoted as saying: “I learned all the lessons I needed to learn on the first film about protecting myself and how to keep a lock on the editing room door.” Such are the trials and trade offs of film-makers when it comes to making their first feature.
The reality, according to Screen Australia, is that between 1970 and 2011, approximately 70 per cent of first-time producers, directors and writers didn’t go on to make a second film. Martha Coleman, head of development at Screen Australia,...

Newly-wed Hulk Hogan has checked into a Florida hospital to undergo back surgery, according to a U.K. report. The 57-year-old wrestling icon exchanged vows with Jennifer McDaniel last week at their home in Clearwater, Florida after a year-long engagement.
But rather than enjoy a long honeymoon, Hogan - real name Terry Bollea - entered a hospital near his home on Tuesday, December 21 for an operation on his back, reports Britain's Daily Mail Online. The procedure has reportedly been scheduled to repair an ongoing issue which has become progressively worse in recent months.
Hogan tweeted before wheeled into the Or, "Going for broke in six hours. Rolling all the marbles, I bet on me..I love all you maniacs!" Us Magazine said the former fighter is doing well in recovery.
