Paper Doll

1 review
6/10

Punches above its weight

'Paper Doll' is a visually gorgeous short - even if it's telling a very familiar sort of story.

I suppose most of anyone who knows about this film does so because of the lead actress Robin Bain. She's strikingly attractive and I guess there are some nude photos of her on the internet or something. I came at the film the opposite way - I caught it at some film festival years ago and was taken with the film and Bain's performance. Looking at her IMDb resume, the stripper role doesn't look unfamiliar to her and that's unfortunate given her acting chops in 'Doll.' Bain expresses a weariness in her performance that suites the character. This isn't Sasha Grey in 'The Girlfriend Experience' where you're not sure if she's acting or has been effectively typecast. Given that Bain also directed the film, you know it's the former and not the latter.

I don't know if the film is available anywhere (I'm a little surprised that it's not since Bain seems to have a bit of a following), but it's more than just eye candy.
