I love you, you love me, Barney’s back on your TV.

A reboot of “Barney,” the famous 1990s children’s TV franchise featuring the titular purple dinosaur, is officially in the works, Mattel announced Monday. Along with the new series, Mattel plans to roll out films and YouTube videos starring Barney in addition to a line of kids’ merchandise. The company is also planning a line of adult apparel and accessories featuring the original Barney design.

The toy-making company is exploring several projects based on popular toylines, including American Girl, Barney, Magic 8 Ball, Major Matt Mason, Matchbox, Masters of the Universe, Polly Pocket, Rock’ Em Sock’ Em Robots, Thomas & Friends, Uno, View-Master, and Wish Bone. In addition to the properties mentioned above, Mattel is also developing Christmas Balloon and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

According to The Npd Group retail tracking service, Hot Wheels are the #1 selling toy worldwide, with over 8 billion vehicles sold. As many of us played with the tiny cars at some point in our lives, that number isn’t a huge surprise. While we don’t...

Image
A tiny number of Bob Dylan fans scored a valuable collectible on Sunday when a three-disc collection of songs cut in 1970, including the legendary George Harrison sessions, was quietly put on sale via the U.K. store Badlands.

“This release is strictly limited to 1 unit per customer,” the store wrote when announcing Bob Dylan – 50th Anniversary Collection 1970. “Extremely limited release. It will sell out instantly … Thank you and best of luck.”

This collection was released in response to a European law stipulating that recordings enter the public domain 50 years after...

Charlie Daniels Meets the Beatles (and Bob Dylan) in 1970
Image
Charlie Daniels, who died Monday of a stroke at 83, was best known for his manic fiddle playing, his kinship with Seventies Southern rockers, and hits like “Uneasy Rider” and “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” But over the course of his five-plus-decades career, Daniels also intersected with many non-Southern rockers, especially early on; he contributed to the Bob Dylan albums New Morning and Self-Portrait, was a member of Leonard Cohen’s touring band, and produced Elephant Mountain by the Youngbloods (home to two of their best songs, “Sunlight” and “Darkness,...

Rachel Griffiths calls for producers to better engage with performers
Rachel Griffiths addresses the Screen Forever conference.

Is it a coincidence that three of the highest-grossing Australian films of 2019 – Rachel Griffiths’ Ride Like A Girl, Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding and Rachel Ward’s Palm Beach – have all been helmed by directors who have backgrounds as actors? Not according to Griffiths.

“It’s not surprising to me that, in a moment where audiences for cinema releases are getting increasingly challenging, actor-directed content is punching above its weight at the box office, because performers have unique sensitivities that we develop by being at the coalface of the final content delivery,” Griffiths told Screen Producers Australia’s Screen Forever delegates last week.

Delivering the conference’s annual Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture, the Golden Globe-winning and Emmy and Oscar-nominated actor, who in recent years has also successfully turned to producing and directing, issued a rallying call to producers to break down silos...
