Trade (2007)

FAQ

Trade

FAQ

No. Trade is based on a January 2004 cover story about sex slaves for New York Times Magazine, titled 'The Girls Next Door' and written by Peter Landesman.

This is implied near the end of the movie, as Laura's green eye color and apparent Mexican-American ethnicity remind Ray of Carly, and Laura appears to be roughly the same age that Carly would be in the present. When Laura calls Ray 'a nice daddy,' referring to his 'purchase' of Adriana, it causes him to turn and stare at her intently. However, at that point, the police swoop in to arrest Laura and her underling, and the question remains unanswered. Presumably, it's left up to the viewer to decide.

Ray and Jorge win the auction for Adriana. Ray is taken to the stash house by Manuelo while Jorge discreetly follows. When Ray finds Laura reminding him of Carly, his attempt to make small talk arouses Laura's suspicions, and she demands that he consummate his ownership of Adriana in the house in order to prove he's not a cop. Adriana tries to help by drawing her own blood to smear on the sheets. Manuelo catches Adriana in the act, but Adriana telling him that Veronica is watching him, spooks Manuelo into lying to Laura that her demand has been met. As Manuelo is preparing to return Ray and Adriana to Ray's car, Jorge clobbers Manuelo with a crowbar and police swarm the house to arrest Laura. Officers also rescue a large number of captive children from the home. Ray gives Jorge the money used to win the auction for Adriana, but Jorge slips it back into Ray's car behind his back. On returning to Mexico City, Adriana is frightened that her mother will reject her because she'd been forced to perform oral sex, but her mother hugs her in profound relief. In the last scene, Jorge tracks down Vadim, the leader of the trafficking operation, and kills him to avenge Adriana. As Jorge walks away, he hears the cry of a small boy who he's shocked to see is Vadim's son.

It is revealed in Veronica's phone call to Poland that the same agency that lured her to Mexico, used papers to have Veronica's mother release Gregor to the agency. There is no mention of what happens to him. Presumably Gregor meets the same fate as all the others in this chain. I had suspected that the boy Vadim is seen hugging prior to Vadim's death was Gregor but the film doesn't show enough of the boys face to make this determination.
