I really have to disagree with the previous review of Mating Call. I really like this short. The movie is ingenious and enjoyable. This film shows a unique perspective of mating / dating in New York City. In a 3 minute film, Patricio Serna compares the mating call of animals to that of the modern couple in NYC. Serna directed, wrote, and acted in the film. He has done a great job creating an amusing short film. The cinematography is also quite good. This is simply a good short film. I would expect Patricio Serna to continue to excel at creating interesting films. I hope he expands his repertoire to include full feature films. Finally, I applaud Landmark theaters for showing short films along with trailers. There are just not enough venues for short films to be seen.
I saw this before a screening of Todd Solondz' _Palindromes_; I have to give credit to the decision to show a short before the film mixed in with the trailers -- it's a pity there are so few venues for short films -- I can't say as that I would have chosen this one. Speaking of credit given, apparently this was made in a 24-hour span. I suppose that's kind of neat, although when the film is this cliché, hackneyed and moronic, I don't think that's much of a problem. The one-line description above basically sums up the entire film; there's no real point or commentary -- just pretension. I was shocked to learn it was only 3 minutes; it seemed much longer.
My suggestion: perhaps take another day, and come up with a script, story or, well, just something that's not stupid?
