Jeroen Krabbé (Boris Arkadin) agreed to take his role because of his friendship with director Bernard Rose.
John Malkovich agreed to do the role of Boris Arkadin at first, but withdraw two days before the shooting.
The walls of the mansion where much of the film takes place are decorated with posters of Boris Arkadian's fictitious films 'Premature Burial' (the clip seen at the beginning of the film), 'Pit of Death,' 'Bedlam' and 'The Embalmer.' The credits shown on the posters include not only many members of the crew, but also John Malkovich and Steven Berkoff, both of who were considered for the role of Boris Arkadin.
Lisa Enos admitted in an interview that she decided to play the leading role of this film because the thought of having her then husband, Bernard Rose, directing another woman in a role with so much nudity irked her a great deal.
When Bernard Rose first approached her then wife, Lisa Enos, with the script of this film, she was pregnant with their first child together. She reacted by throwing the script away. The film was never considered for production until after all their children were born.
