The cast of the show is based on characters from Jonny Quest (1964), comic book super-heroes/villains, and other famous figures from popular culture.
The creators describe the main theme of the show as failure: "This show is actually all about failure. Beautiful sublime failure. Every character is not only flawed, but sucks at what they do, and is beautiful at it. Even in the design, everything is supposed to be kinda the death of the dream world, the jet-age promises. It shows that failure's funny, and it's beautiful and it's life, and it's okay."
The Venture Bros. remains one of the last major cartoons to be completely hand drawn. This explains the long wait times between seasons as this method is so labor intensive.
The Venture Bros. has quietly been an integral part of Adult Swim for over 15 years and it has recently usurped Aqua Teen Hunger Force as the network's longest running program.
At the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con, Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick confirmed that they had already started work on the show's eighth season concurrently with their work on season seven and that it will consist of ten episodes. The Venture Bros. season 8 release was cancelled in 2021 but a film to conclude the series was greenlit later that same year.
