The action is based on first-person accounts from survivors. Craig Santy, the producer/director on the project actually found the few remaining Japanese survivors, and went to Japan to interview them. After months of negotiations, the Japanese agreed to participate. For the first time, their stories are told, alongside those of the American Marines who finally won the battle, but at an astounding price, paid in human lives.
