I remember always enjoying Inside, and first saw it not long after its initial release. It was brutal, gory and set on Christmas Eve. Therefore, a ‘Christmas’ movie that, for a while, got watched every holiday period. But, with my ever-expanded collection of Christmas movies, and not enough time to watch them, it had been several years since I had seen the film. So, Second Sight’s Limited Edition Blu-ray release has come at just the right time!
If someone asked me if home invasion horror movies were a particular favourite of mine, my initial reaction would be no. But two of my favourite movies are Inside and The Strangers. Two movies that do lots of different things with that subgenre but that are equally as effective. Inside is the one...

9-1-1‘s last episode of 2018 ended with a hellish holiday cliffhanger, setting the stage for some exciting — and terrifying — events to come in the new year. TVLine spoke with showrunner Tim Minear about the fall finale’s many twists and (re)turns, but first, a quick recap:
Athena’s invited Bobby to move in with her, which somehow pivoted to him proposing (and her accepting!); Eddie reluctantly welcomed Shannon back into his life, thus fulfilling Christopher’s one Christmas wish; and we learned that, unbeknownst to Maddie, her abusive ex (played by Jennifer Love Hewitt’s real-life husband Brian Hallisay!

Actor Nelsan Ellis, best known for playing flamboyantly gay short-order cook/drug dealer/spirit medium Lafayette Reynolds on seven seasons of HBO’s True Blood, has died. According to Variety, Reynolds, who was 39, died of complications from heart failure.
Born in Chicago, and Julliard-trained, Ellis first broke into TV with a role on Fox’s short-lived crime drama The Inside, playing the tech guy for the show’s Rachel Nichols-led team of crimesolvers. After the series folded, Ellis made a turn into film, giving supporting roles in the Ernie Davis biopic The Express and the Jamie Foxx/Robert Downey Jr. vehicle The Soloist, before scoring a key role in Alan Ball’s campy vampire soap in 2008.

Back in September, Focus Features introduced Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona’s fantasy fable “A Monster Calls” at the Toronto Film Festival. I was wowed, as I had been by his first English-language film “The Impossible” (2012). This is a gifted filmmaker, as attested by his mentor-producer Guillermo del Toro, who hired him to direct “The Orphanage” and by Steven Spielberg, who hired Bayona to direct Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in “Jurassic World 2,” accompanied by his essential right-arm producer Belen Atienza, the Brian Grazer to his Ron Howard. They’re in prep now.
Bayona is poised to be the next Paul Verhoeven, Baltasar Kormákur, or Denis Villeneuve, someone who becomes a star in their own country and also can bridge the challenging cinematic culture of Hollywood. Bayona knows how to handle, with empathy and without sentimentality, intimate, emotional scenes with adults and children, plus action and VFX. He insisted on...

Chicago – HBO used to be a company that kind of let the quality of their TV shows speak for themselves. They would release DVD box sets that often included nary a special feature. Bonus material? Look to one of those “lesser” networks. Our shows are bonus enough. With the advent of Blu-ray however and an increasingly competitive collector’s market, HBO has gone in the complete other direction, releasing increasingly impressive TV on Blu-ray sets. The one just launched for their massive hit “True Blood,” the fourth season, is one of the best to date. It’s a shame the actual season is the worst yet for the show because the Blu-ray set is spectacular.
Rating: 4.0/5.0

Nearly a decade has passed since Adam Baldwin played the hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne on Fox's criminally short-lived "Firefly." Since that time, Baldwin hasn't exactly been absent from the small screen. He was a regular on "The Inside" and "Day Break." He did guest appearances on shows including "Angel" and "Stargate Sg-1." There was also that little five-season run as John Casey on "Chuck," one of the few shows capable of giving "Firefly" a run when it comes to pure cult dedication. But for all of those credits in the intervening years, there's still something...

In the scenario being discussed, Shuman and Lonner and his Oasis partner John Mass would join forces under the Oasis umbrella, tied to an effort to secure financing to expand the business. While 2-year-old Oasis has some TV clients — crossover A-lister Abrams and ER and Detroit 1-8-7 showrunner David Zabel — the company skews heavily towards features with a client list that includes Abrams, Silberling, Turteltaub, Peter Sollett, Michael Tolkin, Audrey Wells and Rob Minkoff. We begin with a recap of last week’s main event and already the presentation has improved by leaps and bounds. The production is slick and polished, but the overly dramatic music is still pretty cheesy and takes the shine off a little.
Kevin Kelly and Nigel McGuinness are standing by the entrance ramp discussing last week’s main event, and announce tonight’s main event will be Davey Richards against his training partner Kyle O’Riley
And then we have a perfect example of everything that’s wrong with wrestling by cutting to a promo of Mike Mondo, aka Biff from Back To The Future. He tells people not to crowd him “’cause I take up a lot of space”. I actually rolled my eyes at that one. Basically the whole promo is about how strong he is and Mike thinks he’s the “biggest man in town”.

Chicago – If Robert K. Elder’s book, “The Film That Changed My Life,” is indeed providing a blueprint for the screening series continuing this month at the Music Box, then cinephiles have every right to rejoice. Elder’s book interviewed a wide variety of filmmakers about the films that left a permanent impact on them, and the series reunites Elder and the filmmakers for screenings of their favorite films.
In June, the first installment featured Victor Fleming’s 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz” hosted by irreverent super-fan John Waters. Now on Oct. 16, the series continues with filmmaker Kimberly Peirce, who will host a 3 p.m. screening of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 landmark, “The Godfather,” as well as a screening of her own 1999 masterwork “Boys Don’t Cry.” Though these films may seem as different as night and day, they both share thematic and stylistic similarities, not to mention an overwhelmingly visceral power.

Warner Bros. is developing a comedy-drama for Ed Helms called True North, Variety reports. The project is being produced by Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer. The studio picked up the pitch from Rob Pearlstein, and focuses on "a selfish talk-show host whose plane crashes, putting him into a two-year coma. When he awakens, he finds that his appearance has been surgically altered and then tries to track down his family to reconnect with his former life."
Helms stars on The Office, and appeared in both the Hangover films. He also starred in Cedar Rapids, which just was released on DVD/Blu-ray. In 2009 he set up a comedy at Warners in which he would portray "a Civil War re-enactor accidentally transported back in time." Pearlstein is best known for his work on Medium and The Inside. He directed a short film called Our Time is Up, which was nominated for an Academy Award.

The flurry of pickups and cancellations at Fox in the past 24 hours has one more addition to the pickup side: a comedy called "I Hate My Teenage Daughter."
It joins another comedy, the Zooey Deschanel-starring "The New Girl," and dramas "Alcatraz" and "The Finder" (along with the previously picked up "Terra Nova") on the network's list of new series for 2011-12.
Unlike the rest of the half-hour comedies Fox has tried in the past couple seasons, "I Hate My Teenage Daughter" is a multi-camera show. Its title is pretty much its premise: The show focuses on two moms (Jaime Pressly of "My Name Is Earl" and Katie Finneran of "Wonderfalls" and "The Inside") who fear their daughters are turning into the kinds of girls who tormented them in high school.
Ellen Kreamer and Sherry Bilsing-Graham ("The New Adventures of Old Christine") created the show, whose cast also includes Kevin Rahm...

Broadway actor Christian Borle has landed the male lead opposite Debra Messing in NBC's Broadway-themed pilot Smash, which is based on an idea by Steven Spielberg. The pilot, from DreamWorks TV and Ums, follows a cross section of characters who come together to put on a Marilyn Monroe musical on Broadway led by the musical's composer Tom (Borle) and lyricist Julia (Messing). Also previously cast in the pilot are Jack Devenport, Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee. Borle was nominated for a Tony in 2007 for Legally Blonde. Katie Finneran has been cast as one of the two leads of Fox's multicamera comedy I Hate My Teenage Daughter. The project, from Warner Bros. TV and writers/executive producers Sherry Bilsing-Graham and Ellen Kreamer, centers on two women, Annie and Nikki (Finneran), who now have daughters just like the girls who picked on them in high school. Finneran is a familiar face at Fox.

Despite a rising movie career, Rachel Nichols apparently can’t quite get rid of the TV itch. As you’ll recall, the former model turned actress started her showbiz career on TV, including a regular stint on “Alias” and her own short-lived TV show “The Inside” (which, coincidentally, also had her plying an FBI agent chasing serial killers), before moving on to movies like “G.I. Joe” and the upcoming “Conan”. Nichols is now poised to return to TV as a new regular on CBS’ crime procedural “Criminal Minds”, one of those crime shows that have been on seemingly forever, but I’ve never actually seen a single, full episode of. Nichols was supposed to only show up in a 3-episode arc, but apparently she made an impression. That, or the show really needed a hot blonde to add to the mostly male cast. Nichols will be playing FBI cadet Ashley Seager,...

Fox may be heading deep into the past next season with a show called "Terra Nova," and "Friday Night Lights" star Kyle Chandler may be going along for the ride.
TV veteran Brannon Braga ("FlashForward," "24," "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Enterprise") has come aboard the show as executive producer and showrunner, and that puts the show on track for a pickup for the 2010-11 season. According to Deadline.com, the show has received an "unofficial" pickup and has been given the go-ahead to start hiring staff.
Meanwhile, a separate report on EW.com says Chandler -- who's currently working on the fifth and likely last season of "Friday Night Lights" -- has received a "lucrative offer" to star in the show, which centers on a family from the 22nd century who travels back in time. Way back, in fact: They wind up co-existing with dinosaurs.
If both the pickup and Chandler's deal go through,...

Ride With The Devil (Criterion) Ang Lee’s revisionist take on the Civil War is awash in moral ambiguity, along with some stunning cinematography, production design, and fine performances. Set during the Kansas-Missouri border war, Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich star as two friends who join up with the Confederate-sympathizing Bushwhackers, finding an odd ally in a former slave (Jeffrey Wright). While it’s fascinating to see America’s bloodiest conflict through the eyes of a foreigner, thereby allowing much of the previously mentioned ambiguity a certain latitude, the film never loses the bad taste it leaves for one simple reason: it asks us, the audience, to side with not just the Confederates, but some of the lowest trash that made up the dregs, and the fringes, of the movement. Big points for audacity, but snake eyes on the story itself. Singer Jewel is impressive in her film debut.

As the title character in "Better Off Ted," an off-the-beaten-path office comedy in its second season on ABC, Jay Harrington feels an added level of pressure. "Nobody is making me feel this way," he emphasizes. "But if we're not being watched as much I may hope, I will feel a certain responsibility." Still, after more than a decade in the business, he says the lead role on a network program is the most "fun and challenging" gig of his career as well as a major step for the 38-year-old Wellesley, Mass., native—perhaps best known for his recurring roles as the temperamental jerk Dr. Wyatt Lockhart on "Private Practice" and Teri Hatcher's youthful love interest on "Desperate Housewives." But starring on "Better Off Ted" presents a new set of challenges, not least his 12-hour-a-day, five-day-per-week schedule. "Look, I'm not working as a coal miner or in an auto plant,...

'Dancing' leads ABC to weekly demo victory
Ballroom dancing, basketball and Brad Pitt proved a winning combination for ABC, which topped the week ending June 12 among adults 18-49. CBS' marathon of Two and a Half Men repeats and reruns of the network's signature crime dramas led the network to a weekly win in total viewers. Meanwhile, it was a rough week all around for launching new series, with Fox's The Inside, ABC's The Scholar and CBS' The Cut opening to weak numbers and only CBS' Fire Me ... Please showing some traction with young viewers. ABC's Dancing With the Stars (15.1 million viewers, 4.8 rating/14 share) was the No. 1 program for the week in total viewers and adults 18-49, according to Nielsen Media Research.
