The Great Yokai War (2005)

FAQ

The Great Yokai War

FAQ

No. The film is partly based on many of the same legends that Mizuki used as the basis of his manga Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro. Also, many of the Yokai that Mizuki created and/or popularized do appear in the movie (as does Mizuki himself in a cameo).

The novel the movie is based on was written by Hiroshi Aramata, author of Teito Monogatari (aka "Tale of the Imperial Capital"), and is actually a continuation of that book, featuring the same evil lord Yasunori Kato. Teito Monogatari was made into an anime released in the US as Doomed Megalopolis as well as a live action film entitled TOKYO: THE LAST MEGALOPOLIS in the US.

This film is not part of the continuity of the animated TEITO MONOGATARI (DOOMED MEGALOPOLIS) nor is it part of the continuity of the live action adaptations TOKYO: THE LAST MEGALOPOLIS and TOKYO: THE LAST WAR (the latter of which deviates greatly from the source material).

In the original novel of TEITO MONOGATARI however, Yasunori Kato has his last battle in 1998 and his fate is left ambiguous. Given that THE GREAT YOKAI WAR was written by the original author and takes place in contemporary times (circa 2005), the story could arguably be seen as a sequel or spin-off to just the novel TEITO MONOGATARI as opposed to any of its cinematic adaptations. In Japan, TEITO MONOGATARI has many spin-off novels of which THE GREAT YOKAI WAR is only one.
