The series has divided opinion among music legends. Paul McCartney called it "not a bad thing" which "gives some people an opportunity, it gives them confidence, it gives them work". However, Elton John, despite appearing on it in 2013, described it as "a cruise ship show" which is "cruel" and "no way to find talent". Similarly, Sting called it a "soap opera which has nothing to do with music" and had "put music back decades".
During the first live show of sixth series, Dani Minogue caused controversy after commenting on press reports. These comments outed contestant Danyl Johnson's sexuality as bisexual.
In series 8 during the live shows Frankie Cocozza was asked to leave the show after breaking competition rules when he was caught boasting about using cocaine. The rules of the series strictly prohibit drug use during the show.
The show came under fire during the later series when acts, many who were given four yes's at the auditions would receive a phone call from production telling them they have been eliminated from the show before even arriving at the boot camp stage.
