The cat used in the movie was really diagnosed as being "retarded" as it had no natural instincts and was deemed "ill" by the vet. Though he could not be trained to use a litter box, he performed every scene he was in flawlessly on the first take.
This movie was shot for only $400 and made during secret overnight shoots using friends, volunteers, and "borrowed" equipment from a local cable advertising company.
Purchased by Disney/Touchstone in 2003 and developed as a sit-com for UPN by Adam Green and Tom Shadyac's Shady Acres. The fate of that pilot is still unknown, but Fear.Net picked up the show Holliston in 2012. Holliston is a re-imagining of the film. Several of the jokes and situations depicted in Coffee & Donuts were used in it's first season.
Won best picture in the 2000 Smoky Mountain Film Festival. It was the only festival that they submitted it to before the movie was picked up for representation by United Talent Agency.
Based on a true story.
