Although this is a "non-official" Star Trek incarnation, Paramount Pictures, which owns the name and the rights to Star Trek, agreed to allow the producers of "New Voyages" to make these episodes on the condition that they made no profit.
The unusually high production values of this web series actually attracted a number of "Star Trek" veterans from the various television and film series to reprise their roles or lend their talents to production, including original series stars George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, Majel Barrett, Grace Lee Whitney, Eddie Paskey and writer David Gerrold. The series has also been endorsed by the estate of Gene Roddenberry as a faithful rendition of Roddenberry's vision.
Production design was meant to mirror that of the original "Star Trek" series as closely as possible, going so far as to utilize vintage materials in constructing the sets, props and costumes, though with a few technological updates such as LCD monitors used instead of slides and camera reels for computer screens. Writer/director David Gerrold has joked that the new set is actually more accurate than the original one.
At the conclusion of filming, the sets, located in Ticonderoga, NY, became the only licensed Star Trek Set Tour in existence. It currently runs a yearly convention, Trekonderoga.
John Winston, who played Lt. Kyle in the original Star Trek (1966) series as well as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) movie, appeared in this fan production as Captain Jefferies.
