By the 1990s, studios were waking up to movie marketing, and the era of the blockbuster. Tim Burton's Batman, released in summer 1989, had introduced the idea of a big opening weekend, and modern movies now target their promotional work to get just that. As such, it's harder and harder for smaller films to snare the top slot at the Us box office, even for one weekend.

In the 1990s, particularly the first half of the 1990s, that wasn't so much the case though. In fact, many films that have long since fallen from the public conscious topped the chart. And in this piece, I've tried to capture some of them.

Chicago – There were basically two careers for Pierre Morel, before he directed the mega-hit “Taken,” starring Liam Neeson, and afterward. The French-born cinematographer, camera operator and now director is releasing “The Gunman,” an action film that stars Sean Penn. Like “Taken,” the motivations for the action are based in the real world, and “The Gunman” travels to Africa, London and Barcelona on his way to redeeming his soul.

Morel has had an adventurous career, in both European cinema and in notable films, beginning with his days as a camera operator on “The Truth about Charlie” (2002), “The Dreamers” (2003) and “Before Sunset” (2004). He was the cinematographer on “The Transporter” (2002) and Director of Photography on “Love and Other Disasters” (2006). His breakthrough came in 2008, when he directed “Taken.” The film resonated with audiences, and allowed his career to move into a new direction.

The life of pop super-duper star Madonna and her wildly popular 1990 “Blond Ambition” concert tour is chronicled in the 1991 documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare.

Directed by Alex Keshishian (Love and Other Disasters), Truth or Dare is filled with razzle-dazzle concert sequences spotlighting such Madonna hits as “Express Yourself,” “Hanky Panky,” “Like A Virgin,” “Material Girl” and “Vogue,” the song that kicked off her halftime performance at Superbowl Xlvi. Interspersed between the musical segments are a slew of behind-the-scenes moments revealing Madonna rehearsing with her dancers, cavorting with her buddies, and flirting with Warren Beatty (Ishtar), her leading boy-toy at that time.

Actor Brittany Murphy died yesterday in Los Angeles, at the age of 32. Her film career spanned fifteen years and took in hits including teen comedy Clueless (1995) and romcom Just Married (2003), as well as indie films like Riding in Cars with Boys (2001) and Sin City (2005) that weren't box office smashes but were nevertheless critically acclaimed.

According to box office figures from the Internet Movie Database, Brittany Murphy's most successful film in box office terms was 2006's Happy Feet, an animation in which she voiced a singing penguin called Gloria; it had taken $197,992,827 at the American box office by May 2007. 8 Mile, the 2002 movie based on Eminem's early life, comes in second with a box office gross of $116,724,075.

Brittany Murphy, an American actress known for her performances in "Clueless," "8 Mile" and "Sin City," among others, died of cardiac arrest early Sunday in Los Angeles. She was 32.

Details are sketchy at this point, but TMZ reports a 911 call was placed this morning at 8 a.m. from a home belonging to her husband. Murphy was pronounced dead upon arrival at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
