In 2017, Claire Dederer published an essay in The Paris Review titled “What Do We Do With the Art of Monstrous Men?” and it immediately went viral. It was less than two months after the first Harvey Weinstein exposés went live, and the critic examined the work of the likes of Roman Polanski, Woody Allen, and Bill Cosby (among others) through the lens of their transgressions. “They did or said something awful, and made something great,” she wrote. “The awful thing disrupts the great work.” As the essay swept across the Internet and social media, Dederer was in the midst of completely an entire book on the topic — one that, presciently, was in the works several years before the #MeToo movement hit Hollywood.
“It looked like a hot take, but the essay had a lot of ambivalence and nuance and people responded really well,” the author tells The Hollywood Reporter. “That...

Gwyneth Paltrow silver dress on the Oscars' Red Carpet Gwyneth Paltrow at the Academy Awards Donning a shining silver dress, Gwyneth Paltrow arrives at the 2011 Academy Awards held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Paltrow's latest movie, Country Strong, was up for a Best Song Oscar. It lost to the Toy Story 3 ditty "We Belong Together," by Randy Newman. More than a decade ago, Gwyneth Paltrow took home the Best Actress Oscar for John Madden's Shakespeare in Love (1998), a romantic comedy-drama also featuring Joseph Fiennes (as William Shakespeare), Judi Dench, Geoffrey Rush, and this year's Best Actor Oscar winner, Colin Firth (The King's Speech). Paltrow's (moderately) gender-bending Shakespeare in Love heroine remains her only Oscar-nominated performance to date. Directed by Shana Feste, Country Strong fared decently at the U.S. box office, but not as well as some had expected. Besides Gwyneth Paltrow, the cast includes...

The 1990s: a time when Sleepwalkers, Burt Reynolds, No Escape, Chevy Chase and F/X/2 could top the Us box office...
By the 1990s, studios were waking up to movie marketing, and the era of the blockbuster. Tim Burton's Batman, released in summer 1989, had introduced the idea of a big opening weekend, and modern movies now target their promotional work to get just that. As such, it's harder and harder for smaller films to snare the top slot at the Us box office, even for one weekend.
In the 1990s, particularly the first half of the 1990s, that wasn't so much the case though. In fact, many films that have long since fallen from the public conscious topped the chart. And in this piece, I've tried to capture some of them.
Inevitably, you're going to have heard of some of them, and what a UK dweller sees as a...

Chicago – There were basically two careers for Pierre Morel, before he directed the mega-hit “Taken,” starring Liam Neeson, and afterward. The French-born cinematographer, camera operator and now director is releasing “The Gunman,” an action film that stars Sean Penn. Like “Taken,” the motivations for the action are based in the real world, and “The Gunman” travels to Africa, London and Barcelona on his way to redeeming his soul.
Morel has had an adventurous career, in both European cinema and in notable films, beginning with his days as a camera operator on “The Truth about Charlie” (2002), “The Dreamers” (2003) and “Before Sunset” (2004). He was the cinematographer on “The Transporter” (2002) and Director of Photography on “Love and Other Disasters” (2006). His breakthrough came in 2008, when he directed “Taken.” The film resonated with audiences, and allowed his career to move into a new direction.

David Fincher doesn't produce very often, so you can bet if he's throwing his weight behind something, he believes in it. To date, Fincher has put his name on those BMW ads in the early '00s directed by folks like Joe Carnahan and John Frankenheimer, Catherine Hardwicke's "Lords Of Dogtown" and, oddly, the Brittany Murphy vehicle "Love And Other Disasters" (we're sure there's a story there). But next is a project that certainly sounds intriguing.
Jacob Aaron Estes, the helmer behind the taut little thriller "Mean Creek" and the Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Banks starring dark comedy "The Details" (more on that in a second), is prepping his next effort "Iou" which has Fincher lending his producing powers, with Media Rights Capital financing (they are also behind Fincher's "House Of Cards"). What's it all about? Your guess is about as good as ours, because the plot of...

Each week within this column we strive to pair the latest in theatrical releases to worthwhile titles currently available on Netflix Instant Watch. This week we offer alternatives to The Three Stooges, Cabin in the Woods & Lockout.
The classic comedy team gets a reboot at the hands of the Farrelly Brothers. Will Sasso, Chris Diamantopoulos and Sean Hayes co-star.
Craving more classic comedy teams?
Duck Soup (1933) The iconic Marx Bros. front this comedy classic. Here Groucho plays Rufus T. Firefly, the recently appointed dictator of the country Freedonia. Masterful slapstick and sharp political satire ensue. Chico, Zeppo, and Harpo Marx co-star.
Laurel & Hardy: Flying Deuces (1939) One of the most critically heralded comedy double acts, Laurel and Hardy made an art out of slapstick. In this winsome misadventure they parody the war stories that were all the rage with a wacky tale of two American idiots who get caught up in...

Madonna strips a pose in Truth or Dare.
The life of pop super-duper star Madonna and her wildly popular 1990 “Blond Ambition” concert tour is chronicled in the 1991 documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare.
Directed by Alex Keshishian (Love and Other Disasters), Truth or Dare is filled with razzle-dazzle concert sequences spotlighting such Madonna hits as “Express Yourself,” “Hanky Panky,” “Like A Virgin,” “Material Girl” and “Vogue,” the song that kicked off her halftime performance at Superbowl Xlvi. Interspersed between the musical segments are a slew of behind-the-scenes moments revealing Madonna rehearsing with her dancers, cavorting with her buddies, and flirting with Warren Beatty (Ishtar), her leading boy-toy at that time.
Currently the top-selling female artist of all-time, Madonna has sold more than 300 million albums worldwide. That said, I’m thinking this one will make some sweet music at retail.

The Weinstein Co. released the official new trailer for the Madonna-directed “W.E.” The film stars Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, James D’Arcy, Oscar Isaac and Natalie Dormer. Here is the film’s synopsis: Madonna's W.E. is a beautifully crafted, passionate tale about the search for true love in the modern world, viewed through the prism of one of history's most fabled romances. The year is 1998, and Manhattan is abuzz with anticipation about the upcoming auction of the estate of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. But the auction is far more than a diversion for Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), a transplanted Southerner trapped in an unhappy and abusive marriage. Transfixed by the exquisite artifacts of the Windsors' lives, Wally becomes obsessed with the love story of Wallis Simspon (Andrea Riseborough), the chic, charismatic American who captured the heart of King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy). As she learns more...
