Some of the equipment used in the film has not been used by the real Bundeswehr for many years. For example, the M16A1 weapon used in the maneuver by both the Americans and the Bundeswehr dates back to the times of the Vietnam War and was used in newer versions at the time the film was made. At that time, the Bundeswehr was using both the G3 and the G36.
The name of Hauptmann's adjutant Schulz is an allusion to the Schulz in Ernst Lubitsch's comedy "To be or not to be".
The character "Major Hauptmann" is claimed to have no secret service. This is incorrect: see Service de Renseignement de l'Etat, which was renewed in 2004.
The scene in which the recruits of Room 54 meet the obstacle course for the first time is a parody of the film I think I'm smooching a moose!. The background music is also from this film.
