Due to being released in close proximity to Resident Evil 4 (2005), the game received a lot of unfair comparisons to it. Both games feature a wise cracking blond-haired protagonist who is sent on a mission that ends up leading them to save a woman in distress and fight monsters, which include people being taken over by a parasite and even feature over-the shoulder aiming and laser sights on their firearms.
At one stage of development, this was meant to be a sequel to Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (2001). It was also considered for being made into an Xbox exclusive entry into the Time Crisis series.
