Wbd first announced it was bringing live news from CNN to Max in August.
“We have the broadest and highest quality entertainment offering, and now will include world-leading news as a meaningful addition for all Max subscribers, at no extra charge,” Wbd’s head of streaming J.B. As CNN races to catch up with the streaming world, its strategy in launching CNN Max — more than a year after the failure of CNN+ — will be a hat trick: offer news on its main subscription platform while preserving as much of its fast-declining linear audience as possible.
The pressing need to get CNN into the streaming space is obvious. Competitors like Fox News have already begun building an audience on their own streaming services. And adding news to the Max platform gives Warner Bros. Discovery a significant leg up over competitors like Netflix and Disney+, which currently do not carry live news at all.
“There is only one CNN and a significant number of U.S. homes have cut the cord. So if you don’t have a robust streaming solution, you can’t reach them,” Dave Morgan, CEO of cross-channel TV advertising firm Simulmedia, told TheWrap.

The new Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform Max announced Thursday the addition of CNN Max, a 24/7 news service that will be free to subscribers.
The streaming news offering will launch Sept. 27, just over a year after the hastily aborted launch of CNN+. That project, which launched in May of 2022, was shut down three weeks later as the Warner Bros. merger with Discovery was freshly underway.
“CNN Max will leverage CNN’s reporting excellence, global newsgathering, and live programming from CNN US, CNN International, and feature original programming built specifically for Max,” the company said in a Thursday release. “CNN Max will be a new seven-day-a-week/24-hour service and be part of an open beta for news that will enable experimentation with product features, content offerings and original storytelling, all with the input and feedback from the Max community.”
The service will feature known CNN anchors and new programming built specifically for the streaming platform.

Chris Licht made his first big programming move at CNN with the announcement that Don Lemon will leave primetime (and his post-primetime hour) to anchor a new morning show with Poppy Harlow (who is leaving 9 a.m.) and Kaitlan Collins. CNN anchor Poppy Harlow announced Tuesday she’s stepping away from the network temporarily to study at Yale Law School. Jim Sciutto will continue to co-host the hour they currently anchor together and her slot will be filled with rotating guest co-hosts.

CNN mid-morning anchor Poppy Harlow is going to take a hiatus from working on her program to tend to a legal matter: studying the law at Yale University.
Harlow, who has been with CNN since 2008, will be pursuing Yale Law School’s one-year Master of Studies in Law, a program aimed at people who are not attorneys but want to become more familiar with legal studies and apply knowledge of the law to the work they do. The degree is open to journalists. Linda Greenhouse, the longtime New York Times reporter who covered the Supreme Court for many years, attended the program. Harlow’s last regular day on air for now will be August 20.
“I’m here to stay for good as a journalist, but I wanted to learn more about the law,” Harlow explained in a recent interview. “I really felt that over the last year and a half.

Jeffrey Toobin made his CNN return Thursday, seven months after being fired from the New Yorker for exposing himself on a Zoom call with his colleagues. He said he was “incredibly grateful to CNN for taking [him] back.”
Since his November ouster from the New Yorker, which came after 27 years of employment, the media world has been wondering about Toobin’s fate as CNN’s chief legal analyst, but the cable network has stayed mum about his future. He was “on leave,” he confirmed during his on-air reemergence Thursday, adding that his behavior on that Zoom call last fall was “deeply moronic and indefensible.”
Anchor Alisyn Camerota — echoing the thoughts of just about everyone who’s read the story of what happened that fateful day in October — said asked him, “What the hell were you thinking?” Note, too, that Camerota, a Fox News alum, has been outspoken against sexual harassment in the media industry for years.

Brooke Baldwin rebuked a guest on her show, CNN Newsroom, on Tuesday after he used the N-word live on air.
Charles Kaiser, a noted author and blogger, used the word moments before Baldwin cut him off, during a condemnation of Steve Bannon, President-elect Donald Trump‘s pick for chief White House strategist.
“The more I’ve sat here and listened to the fact that somebody used the N-word on this show — it is not Ok. It is not Ok, Charles Kaiser,” Baldwin said.
She was visibly bothered, her eyes appearing to water and her voice shaking. “Please don’t use the N-word on my show,...

As this week brought 20-plus inches of rain, tornadoes, and severe flooding to parts of Texas and Oklahoma, killing more than 20 people, some major media figures have taken to noting a connection between the storms and anthropogenic climate change. Bill Nye's reaction caused quite a bit of controversy with his detractors, and so on Friday morning, he responded via an appearance on CNN Newsroom.

Saturday Night Live, Ep. 40.17, “Michael Keaton/Carly Rae Jepsen” can’t build a show around its host
Saturday Night Live, Season 40, Episode 17, “Michael Keaton/Carly Rae Jepsen”
Aired April 4, 2015 at 11:30 pm Et on NBC (East coast version watched for review)
The Host: The world needs more Michael Keaton. He is an actor capable of incredibly unhinged weirdness and painfully deep pathos, so it makes some unfortunate sense that Hollywood has not always known what to do with him. But it is rather unfortunate that SNL can’t really figure out what to do with their host either. Keaton either finds himself at the center of sketches that can’t construct a universe to sustain his oddball energy (the advertising sketch) or sidelined in sketches without strong POVs (the “Smart House” sketch). It’s unsurprising, then, that the one sketch where Keaton shines is the Easter greeting sketch, where he just addresses the camera for five minutes, a conceit that puts the full breadth of his talents on display.

"I'm Brooke Baldwin, and you're watching the loose collection of daytime nonsense we call the CNN Newsroom." So opens this stellar sketch from tonight's Michael Keaton-hosted episode of "SNL," which takes on the inanity of CNN daytime's apparent propensity for trotting out 8-bit Nintendo-quality graphics to reenact horrific real-life events and Muppets to dramatize Iranian nuclear negotiations. Also, Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act gets a delirious performance-art spin.

Michael Keaton has hosted “Saturday Night Live” twice before, but hasn’t hosted since 1992. It was a full decade between that and his original hosting gig. The man does not rush things when it comes to hanging out in Studio 8H. And while the iron may not be quite as hot on his career as it was during the recent Oscars season, that’s no reason not to have him host now. His off-kilter persona and unique energy are still perfect for the show, and there’s little reason to think there’s every chance for a great episode tonight. As always, I’ll be liveblogging each segment as they air. As always, a few of you will not understand that it’s Ok if my opinions don’t line up with yours. As always, most of you understand that and enjoy sharing your opinions along with mine in real time.

CNN's boots-on-the-ground coverage of the violence in and around Gaza City has yielded some dramatic, if possibly flawed, results. It all began when Lemon complained that Hill had been rude to him in a hotel.
